I disagree Fallout 3 had a good story

Well, its all perspective isnt it?  It depends what you compare it to.  Compared to say...Mass Effect or other Bioware stories, Fallout 3 seems like Jack and Jane.  Compared to Final Fantasy, it is as logical as a calculus text book.

Morrowind is an excellent title, even today.  Its not to heavy, and it rewards players for clever strategies and tactics.  The engine is a sand box, without autoleveling which allows the player to do  some pretty amazing things.  I have seen my brother stack magical spells that allowed him to jump across the continent (he didnt survive the landing, but it was still impressive).

Bloodlines, is another excellent story driven game.  I would recommend the stalker titles over Fallout 3, Fallout 3 is also pretty good. The earlier Fallout games are excellent, but do have dated graphics and presentation (even for their time).  Planescape:Torment is often lauded as the penacle of story telling, but it starts really, really slow.  Its like crack for your creative mind though.

If you enjoy the story telling of fever dreams, try the Final Fantasy series.

If you enjoyed the shooter and combat aspect of ME2, then Borderlands is definately a game you should try. If you are looking for a deep story with NPC interaction and conversatoin trees....not so much.

If you are looking for NPC conversations, then Fallout 3 is a good pick (and a very good buy if you can find a used copy of the GotY addition that gives you all the DLC for free). It does have it's quirks, but it is an outstanding game in my opinion. I do agree the Bethesda engine is showing it's age and does not look all that great and the combat is less than stellar.

If you want old-school isometric, I'd suggest Planescape:Torment and the original Fallout. The orignial Baldors Gate is a classic and I still like the Original Neverwinte Nights (if you want the full on D&D experience).

I find it intersting that one person claims ME2 isn't an RPG and then names Final Fantasy games as an RPG....how is one and not the other when they share so many JRPGish traits?  If ME2 had semi-turn based combat  it WOULD be a Final Fantasy game (with some more advanced plot choices that really don't make that big of a difference in the overall story).  It IS all about perspective.

The best thing ever to grace the gaming landscape is DeusEx from Warren Spector. But it's old. Like 10 years so that might put off some people. Though if you haven't played it (and don't mind outdated graphics and AI) I strongly recommend it.
It's one of the most important games in gaming.

I just loaded this one up again.  After a bit of googling, I discovered a few texture mods and even a DirectX10 renderer.  Not that this makes it look like a modern DX10 game but it does improve it quite a bit for modern systems, gets it to run in widescreen, anti-aliased, etc.  If you can get past the dated graphics, it's an amazingly good game.

Interestingly, there was a similar debate about its sequel as what you see with ME2 now, with lots of fans charging that it had been "dumbed down" for the console.  They removed the skills.  Changed the ammo system.  Sound familiar? :)

I was always more of a Black Isle fanboy than a Bioware fanboy. That said, DA is the first game that I'd put on the same level as Planescape: Torment.

Wow, that is high praise.  Torment is more of a personal story, DA is more of "save the world" story.  Torment also had the most conflicted and complicated characters.  It had more anguish, remorse, and regret than any game I have had ever played.  It also had a philosophical question of Nature vs Freewill that it wrestled thoughout the story.  It got pretty deep.  DA touches some interesting sociological themes, especially when involving the Chantry.  Morrigan is an excellent character as well, I thought Anora was really interesting too.

DA is pretty good, might be to early to compare it to Torment though.

If you want to play a JRPG, three words: Final Fantasy 6.

Of course, it's a Super Nintendo game, so its graphics are completely outdated. But really, thta shouldn't matter much.

Who ranged from comedic foil to probably the saddest story ever. Man, I love that game.

I love Annah and her cockney-scottish-ish accent.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (this and ME2 are IMO BioWare's 2 best games)

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords (make sure you download lots of mods, 'cos the game is buggy and unfinished)

Jade Empire

Neverwinter Nights 2 (buggiest game ever WITH the patches, don't even try to do the original campaign if you have the expansion installed)

The Witcher (one of the best RPGs ever with very awesome choices and consequences, better than DAO and ME1)

Fable 1 & 2

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines (don't forget the unofficial patches)

Fallout 3

Alpha Protocol is coming out soon and I'm really looking forward to it

Hey!

Well I have to say I played ME1 and 2 and found the 2nd absolutely amazing. I've loved most of biowares stuff but this just did it for me I was constantly on the edge of my seat! Im in the same predicament! I loaded up a few other RPG games and they seemed so dull the only one that managed to keep my attention lastnight was Lost odyssey.

Im gonner try Heavy Rain so Ill let you know what thats like. But can't wait for ME3!

wow it's great to see such a good discussion on the pros and cons of so many great rpg type games without much flaming.... truely this is a unique forum group compared to the many I have seen in my gaming days lol. I will certainly be trying some of these out and have just order heavy rain.

I'm looking forward to some of the new titles coming out like Alpha Protocol. I hope the publishers take heed to the popularity of these types of games (ME/ME2/DA?FO3 etc) and continue to push the boundaries. The potential for this genre now will be very interesting to see in the next few years.

The only non-Bioware games I've liked as much as Bioware's are Planescape: Torment, The Witcher and KotOR 2, specially the first one.
And they all use a Bioware engine :P.
People aren't mentioning it much but I loved NWN because:
- It had Hordes of the Underdark.
- It had tons of great modules you could play. Some of those module makers now work for Bioware (Yeah, I'm looking at you Rick Burton, I can't forgive you for not finishing that amazing paladin trilogy).

Funny, those same games are on my list.

HotU was great and Mask of the Betrayer was great too

The Witcher is top of the RPG heap but they haven't been challenged by releasing a sequel yet. Bloodlines, DA:O, BioShock, Fahrenheit, etc. etc. are all good games but Witcher set the standard.

I respect your opinion, but that is a really hard idea to believe.  Why do you think it's best, might I ask?

Well, I can't say that The Witcher is the best RPG ever, but it is better than DAO and VTMB

For one, your choices actually have big consequences on the game (unlike EVERY BioWare game) and can completely change some chapters. It's also a much darker and mature game than DAO

The best thing about The Witcher is that are no good or evil choices and the conseqences are very realistic (again unlike EVERY BioWare game where good choices=good consequences)

I have huge respect towards CD Projekt after they spent so much time patching the game, redoing VA and textures and making premium modules (and all sorts of extras) and giving it all away for free (unlike EA/BioWare)

BTW, BioShock and Fahrenheit are NOT RPGs

That depends on what your after. Do you want a sci-fi RPG or more fantasy?

I personally would put these two games from Bethesda as first choices to consider both for the PC and X-box 360 and PS3 for Oblivion at least .

-The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion
-Fallout 3

Both game have a lot of side quests (something BioWare missed the boat on in ME2) as well as expansion pack downloads to add replay value and expand the game.

For sci-fi
-Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (BioWare)
-Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 The Sith Lords (Osidian).

Both are available for PC and X-Box but you might have to hunt them down to find them. Both are great games even with Sith Lords having issues with some messed up plot due to a rushed release (so rumor has it) from Lucas Arts. Unfortunately I cant think of many true sci-fi genre RPG’s if any beyond those.

Of course Jade Empire and The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind are great as well.

-Enchanted Arms (X-box 360) isn’t to bad if you like Final Fantasy like games. I played it for a short time before getting tired of it. Not a huge fan of Final Fantasy or games that follow their style anymore. To many menus and micromanagement for spells in my opinion.

The Elders Scroll III: Morrowind GOTY

I cannot recommend this enough but it is a VERY different type of game. Bioware games are more like playing a movie with fantastic plot and great characters.

Morrowind is more like playing old school DnD. YOU are the character and you do any damn thing you want. It is common for people to play for 40 hours before they even START the Main Quest. Some never start and are fine with it.

I have dropped literally hundreds of hours into that game and there are more mods for it than any other game I can think of.

You can get it for a couple of bucks almost anywhere as well.

I just have to repeat the call for Deus Ex here, as not enough people have mentioned it. I mean, Mass Effect 2 is possibly the closest spiritual successor to Deus Ex that I have seen to date. It's old, but that just means it's really cheap and a quick download from steam. The sequel, Deus Ex: Invisible Wars, wasn't bad but lacked some of the punch of the original.

As for an original suggestion, as long as you're willing to fire up a SNES emulator then I'd have to recommend Shadowrun. It was one of the best early console RPGs, during the height of the Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, etc era.

I second that riiiiight, that kid doesn't know what he's talking about. Fallout 3 is the only game I miss playing that I've played in the last year. They create quite a world in it.

Oblivion is epic. I haven't played another game that bests it yet. It has fantastic graphics, sound, rpg, inventory, story.. it's a must play.

I will always recommend Fallout 1 and 2, especially with all the fan-made patches. If you have never played them, you really should. It was the first game I played that actually made me go out of my way to learn about the world, rather than simply jogging through.

As for Fallout 3....well, I wouldn't say it is a bad game, but it basically murdered the Fallout universe pretty well. Made it popular, yes, but killed it in spirit.
