 Hey,

Whilst playing ME2, I'm getting infrequent full system shutdowns. The game runs fine until suddenly, plonck; the computer suddenly reboots. For some reason, this can range from once every 15 minutes to well over an hour. My system specs are well over the minimum requirements:

ATI Radeon 4850
Intel Core i2 Q9400
4GB RAM
Windows 7 64-bit

I guess it should also be noted that I recently replaced my weak PSU in the hope that it would solve this issue. Unfortunately, that seems to be money down the drain. Also, the only other game where I experience random reboots is... Mass Effect 1. :(

Any suggestions/fixes???

Sounds like a bluescreen. Microsoft had the "brilliant" idea to "remove" bluescreens by rebooting the PC. Google for a simple manual how to disable that. The next time you get a bluescreen (without the rebooting of course) take some notes please.

Here is an example what informations are needed:

Actually, it sounds like a bad power supply to me.

No game or software will reboot a computer. (OK the Windows "shutdown" and "restart" will, but I don't think that BioWare has that code in ME2.)

This is either caused by a hardware problem or driver failure in Windows 7 kernel space. Some of the common HW problems seen with ME2 are over heating of either the CPU or GPU and a power supply that is not up to the task. The CPU overheating usually just causes a shutdown, not a reboot. The same result, a computer shutdown not reboot, with a problematic power supply.

A reboot is likely caused by a communications issue between a driver and its hardware or a driver crash in kernel space. Both of these result in a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death). Getting the BSOD code is required. This code will tell what caused the BSOD and with this information it is possible to understand and then maybe fix the problem.

Do the following to disable auto reboot:

My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced system settings -> Advanced ->Startup and Recovery -> System Failure -> uncheck Automatically restart

Okay, I tried turning on the BSOD but my computer just shuts down, without a message. I made an error when I said reboot, it is just a pure shut down. Sorry!

CPU or GPU? I have a 9800GT hanging around. Bit of a downgrade but worth trying?

When it shuts down, it's not a windows or software problem. Your BIOS on the mainboard uses that as a last resort option to avoid hardware damage. This can be caused by overheating or a weak/failing Power supply. So Gorath Alpha has a valid point.

yes, a power down/shutdown is either a bad power supply or an over heating CPU or GPU. Try cleaning out the dust bunnies, verify that the fans are working.

Real Temp will display the temps of both CPU and GPU. Alt-TAB during game play to monitor.

I have an issue where the pc locks up, there's no restart, no error nothing.

I'm also running windows 7 64 bit Amusing thing is, it was running fine on the pre-release version, since I installed the retail, it's unplayable ^_^

My drivers are all identical, as I had all the drivers downloaded and installed.

I'm at a loss for words here ^_^.

Specs are: Nvidia 8800GTX, creative X-fi titanium, intel core 2 duo E6750 @2.66, 4 gigs of ram.

The game and VM are on a raid 0.

I tried installing and re-installing dx (as I had the missing Dll error originally).

The game will usually shut down after about 30 minutes or so.

As far as I can tell, everything's identical on the machine, and I doubt any hardware became faulty while I re-installed windows (it's possible, but I doubt my luck is that bad :D ).

Any suggestions appreciated :)

Okay, switching video cards completely solved my issue. How strange, the 4850 runs everything else just fine. Oh well, at least the problem has been identified.

Evil ducky, if you have enough disk space, it might be worth your while to create a partition with a different operating system.

Try the omega drivers, it fixed the issues for me (crash BSOD lock-ups and such) now it runs fine without so much as a hiccup .

Use Driver Sweeper to remove your previous driver and install the Ati Omega one, here's the link

 Good luck!

Did you try the Omega Driver?

Don't take such harsh decisions before you try everything!

Hmm I have similar problem but my pc shuts down completely at specific cut scenes and its not due to heat or power failure for sure, otherwise everything runs smoothly .
First time it happened when trying to activate  Grunt , I was able to fix it after forcing Anti-Aliasing through Catalyst control center so it is definitely a software problem !
Problem is that after downloading the Kasumi mission it happens again at first cutscene at Kasumi advertisement and my fix wont work anymore .
Any ideas?

Interesting, releasing Grunt and that first conversation with Kasumi seem to be trigger points for something. What that something is, I'm not sure.

You might want to check out this thread where Karen Shepard narrowed the problem down to her video card. According to her, both shutting off a GPU (hers was a dual core - you wouldn't have that option :/) and later, installing a new cooler (which also meant changing which connectors from the power supply were hooked into the video card) fixed her crashing problem with Kasumi.

If you're looking for a quick fix i.e. another way to rattle things loose, is it possible to underclock your card? I think the ATI Catalyst Center has something called Overdrive, and you might have a vendor-specific driver installed as well.

Have the identical experience as the OP. Started when I installed the most recent DLC which gives the Inferno Armor. Was fine before that.

Thanks a lot Kloreep Underclocking the card from Catalyst did the trick ,just had the conversation with Kasumi and hopefully it will be ok from now on.

Thanks again
