Its about that time of the month, well that exact time of the month where we need to take a second look at ME2 and see if it holds true to my original score of 50/50.
Presentation 10/10:
-Bioware's 2 years spent making Mass Effect 2 were spent well indeed. The overall story is compelling and emotional, the choices feel more real and grittier and the dialog is comparable to the best of blockbuster movies.
-The story is rich and unique with an emphasis on gaining trust and recruiting the best to survive the worst, or not. With most Bioware games there is usually a surprise or explosively eye opening ending and Mass Effect 2 takes the cake giving any other Bioware game a run for its money.
-Right from the start Mass Effect gets into the thick of things and doesnt let down its sense of looming dread and fear of the unknown until you finally put the game down. Few games have ever had such a commanding grasp of my time and attention as Mass Effect 2 does.
-There are some drastically improved game menus and functionality, with everything laid out in front of you so that nothing gets too confusing or complicated. A little stingy on the customization but this is easily made up for with the added content including different biotic/tech/combat powers and a larger weapons cache to choose from.
-The game can feel linear at times, like where the right path to take is the only path to take, but with so much content its not too big a concern.
Graphics 10/10:
-Its hard if not near impossible to complain about the graphics in Mass Effect 2, with such an astounding improvement from the original Mass Effect. The graphic changes are apparent and for the best, with improved body and facial language its easy eough to tell exaclty how each member of your squad feels, whether it be how they feel emotionally or physically *wink*.
-Cut scenes are rendered with in game graphics and this can often make a player question if he/she is simply watching something or physically controlling how it pans about and this is something characteristic of greatness in my mind.
-Everything in the Mass Effect world is shocking and bold with each world having its own unique atmosphere and "taste". The artwork gets as much a kudos as design gets because everything has a certain flare to it that demands attention and respect. Just walking around each world in Mass Effect is fulfilling in itself which is something I have never said about a video game until now.
Sound 10/10:
-A sign of great music is when it accuratly portraits the mood of a particular situation and Bioware does this near-perfectly with Mass Effect 2. It can be subtle and quiet like at the citadel or powerful and loud like on Omega, each world has a voice and that voice is beethoven to my ears.
-The background is a place often gone unnoticed with most games, whose developers focus entirely on the foreground and dont think of panoramic atmospheres. Bioware adds a background and more, from a gun fight going on far off to large world social chatter it always feels like there is more going on around you than what you can see.
-When I play a sci-fi game I like to be constantly reminded that I am in the future and the sound does this without a hitch, guns make familiar yet strange sounds when fired and the musical score has an ambience to it that makes the galaxy feel established and foreign at the same time.
-If I did have a complaint "and it is a weak complaint in itself" its that the musical score is not as good as the original Mass Effect in that it didnt have the same feel of mystery to it.
Gameplay 9.5/10:
-What seems to be the majority of Bioware's work on Mass Effect 2 is in the gameplay mechanics and its easy to appreciate how much better it has become. Glitches with combat are now a rarity and the effectiveness of location is more apparent, even with the drastically improved cover system you will still not feel safe, moving around is often your best friend.
-Enemies are smarter and more deadly as they will often amush or flank you in order to take you down so utilizing the combat field to its full potential is often the difference between victory and bitter defeat.
-Another huge improvement goes to the squad AI, you will now feel like my teammates are actually making a difference in combat and not just walking into walls and shooting at boxes. With individual squad commands its now easier to move about your team in order to gain any advantage that you can in combat, but if left alone they usually pick a good spot to take down enemies themselves.
-To gain a true appreciation for the work Bioware did, play it on the Insanity difficulty and I guarantee that you will find respect for the new combat system. *Damn those scions are tough!*
-Now the combat isnt perfect, with a few problems that are new to this Mass Effect. Biotics are less effective and often less useful than they were in the original Mass Effect and on Insanity difficulty they appear almost pointless to have, with the exception of warp. Where once they would work on all enemies unless they had a strong barrier, they now only work on enemies without shields, armor or barriers and you need to get rid of all three of these *assuming the enemy has them* to make biotics work and since enemies die very quickly when removed of all protective gear the effectiveness of Biotics become mute. Also the included ammo system is kind of a bother when players of the first Mass Effect will be use to unlimited ammo with no reloads. You also dont hold enough ammo and constanly run out, even with the ammo upgrades.
-There is however a much improved WOW! factor with the weapons this time around, Heavy weapons have some of the coolest features that all gamers will enjoy.
Lasting Appeal 10/10:
-For a while there single player games were looking at hard times thanks mostly to the multiplayer mayhem that plagued the gaming industry around the mid 2000's. Now with games like Mass Effect and Fallout 3 single player games are begining to regain the attention they deserve.
-With a rewarding choice option in Mass Effect players are able to play their story an almost countless number of ways, with each playing out differently than the last. The beauty with Mass Effect is to actually play it more times than once and choose different options, because then the game will turn out entirely different and players will be rewarded with different ending, new content and dialog and possibly different relationships with different squadmates.
-With an imported save system from Mass Effect 1 it still feels like you are playing the same Commander Sheppard that you were before.
-Players can expect to play this game for many hours and its something that can rival even the best of multiplayer games with hours of enjoyment and entertainment.
Overall 49.5/50
-Mass Effect 2 is one of the best games I have ever played and is probably the best and freshest sci-fi series in a long, long time. There is so much good done in this series that it has left the Mass Effect forum flooded with ideas for ME3 and topics about who was their favourite squadie or romanceable. Not many games have gotten this kind of praise since The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, or Chrono Trigger and rightly so, Mass Effect deserves every bit of praise it receives and the many complaints/suggestions or improvements it gets just show how envolved gamers have become with this series and how much it means to them.
-Now all Bioware needs to do is add Wrex as a potential squad member for ME3 and gamers everywhere will cry in joy!
