Interesting idea, have any games tried this kind of idea yet?

I suspect that might be true but I question how successful that would be!

Thats just me though, I use to be mister MMORPG but after decades of trial and error I have come to understand people in MMORPGs will never be as interesting or exciting as a well written NPC in a single player game!

Even TOR being made right now, im going to play that as a stand alone RPG and when im done, so is my account.
Im not sticking around for some cyber pee pee stroking PVP game
Im not sticking around for 3rd rate RPing (If I want to RP I can find far better places to do it)

Im playing TOR as a RPG, im there long as the story keeps me there.

Wish it was different but MMORPGs cant deliver the experience I want from them and player interaction is rather boring at best, truth be told.

Personally I hope they keep pumping out QUALITY RPGs as a stand alone game with great stories and the universe grows with each story.

I seriously have no issue at all with the game being 200 gigs in size on my PC if the universe is really that size and playable!

Course im STARVING for GOOD Sci Fi RPG goodness.
Im burned out on Fantasy and DA:O is the last fantasy franchise I will keep buying.
I want Sci Fi, Cyber Punk, Knights of Old Republic, Gothic Horror RPGs or even more games like Heavy Rain (nbot not for PScrap as not buying one just for a few games)

Bioware has only said that ME 3 is the last where you will play as Shepard.
As for more Mass Effect games, read these:
http://www.joystiq.c...d-of-franchise/
http://uk.gamespot.c...ws/6185908.html

Direct quote from te latter:
(Mass Effect)  "will be a franchise for [EA] for a very long time."

So we will get more Mass Effect, just maybe not from Bioware.

The only thing I wish is that Bioware will still be in charge of the next games... I'd hate to see another KOTOR2 crappy type game for profit's sake.

Anyway, I don't really care about what they do to the ME franchise as long as BW is in charge, it will always be a great game \\o/

ME 1&2, Bioshock 1&2, Witcher, Fallout 3, DA:O, Fallout: New Vegas and Alpha Protocol, these are games that have come out in the last couple of years or are coming this year. So I really wouldn't call single player RPGs "almost dead". I don't know how old you are, but RPGs have been dead/dying for the last 15 years, for a dying breed there still comes pretty good games quite often.:P

I would be down for another RPG. As unoriginal as it may seem, I think an origin-type opening depending on whatever class/race you pick is almost necessary, but instead of giving you your antagonist/end-boss, it would vary dependent on choices you make in the game. It could make the experience more interesting "choosing" who/what you may be facing in the end.

Unless ME3 is the one game to rule them all, I'd like to see more ME RPG-Shooter gameplay, with improvements and such, even though it'd be with a new character. Do another Triology, imho. Let players create their character from various races and such. Add yet another layer of replayability into it, as much work as that is. Add in more diverse and more fun minigames, expand gameplay, maybe add a couple more classes, have a blast.

Spinoffs of different gameplay genres, I could care less for generally. I like the Universe, but not enough to get me interested in a cumbersome RTS like Bungie's Halo Wars, or a soulless FPS like Halo's, er... Halo 3.

Prequels, for me, are even worse. What's the point of playing Rachni wars? We know how they end, and we don't have nearly the options we do in ME1. That's going backwards!

God, I really hope not.

Seems to be the trend these days after the succes of WoW.

For me, RPG's are all about the single player experience.
They allow you to become personally attached to the story & characters, which I think is lost on MMORPG style games.

I'm still rather annoyed with Bioware for the route they're taking with the Star Wars franchise:
I would much rather Bioware produced KOTOR3, which the fans truly DESERVE after the lacklustre KOTOR2.

I also think that developers see MMORPGs as a money-spinner, with the monthly fees, add-ons etc.

So, while I think there is room for MMORPGs, I just hope that not all RPGs end up this way.

Honestly, I think the series will finish after the 3rd game. I hope I'm wrong though. And besides, they could do so much more with it: simply enough, there could be a bunch of invaders come in from a different galaxy.

I have a new idea for a Mass Effect game.

The same kind of gameplay/mechanics as in ME 2, but with the difference that you would create your whole team like you create Shepard. Of course only the main character would be a total blank slate like Shepard, the other team members would have a fixed race/sex/personality, but you could choose their appearence and their class (and obviously each of them would have their  own unique modular armor).

Maybe even the class system could be removed altogether, there would be about 40 different skills from where you would pick 8 for your character(s), obviously with this you could create extremely powerful characters (combine the tech armor, adrenaline rush and biotic charge for example), but I don't think this is a huge problem since you can create overpowered characters in basically any rpg, and since this is a single player game it's not such a big problem.
With this kind of system you could create totally unique squads.

This would probably limit the number of squadmates to 4-5, but I don't think this a problem because you can only take two squadmates with you anyway, and this would create a chance to explore their personalities much further than in ME 2.

If there is anyone who bothered to read this, what are your thoughts about this kind of game?

Course as a 44 year old RPGer, I wouldnt call Bioshock 1&2 or Fallout3 RPGs (no clue about Witcher or Alpha Shock and no one knows for sure what type of game FO:NV will be as Obsidian has said they going to stay true to FO3, and that was RPG ultralite at best).

but I do agree RPGs not dead

In recent memory I played KotOR 1&2, Jade Empire, ME1&2, Lost Odysee, Fallout 1 and 2 (and kinda 3), Morrowind, Obilvion,  plus there a whole list of RPGs I didnt play or didnt have a PS3 for.

RPGs not dead, thats jusst a teeny booper shooter fans wet dream. Games with out stories, no thinking involved.

I would definitely put Witcher solidly in the RPG category; it was a pretty decent game.  Alpha Protocol remains to be seen.

Still, of those 11 games you list, only 4 have been released within the last 4 years.  Of those 4, one (Lost Odyssey) is a JRPG, and two (ME2, Fallout 3) are action/RPGs with heavy emphasis on the action.

Also notable is the trend away from RPG elements from Fallout 1/2 to Fallout 3, Morrowind to Oblivion, and of course ME1 to ME2.  Knights of the Old Republic, meanwhile, has transformed from single-player to MMO.

I think that it's harder to define what is a RPG and what is not these days.
In JRPGs and Diablo-style (action-rpgs?) games you have huge skill trees, and you can basically create any kind of "character(s)", but you can't really affect the plot in anyway (except in the best JRPG ever, Chrono Trigger) so you really don't play any kind of "role".
On the other hand in ME 1&2, where you have simplistic skill trees, you actually do play a "role". So I don't think that having a lot of skills makes a game more or less of a RPG.
Just my opinion though, no need to spread it around.;)

PS. People who complain that ME 1 was more of a RPG than ME 2, because it had a bigger, more "complex" skill tree, seem to forget that the ME 1 skill tree was full of useless skill upgrades (like getting +2% for your assault rifle damage), where as in ME 2 every skill level counts.

Me too...with a l337- and infantile gamer filter. So not interested in entering another universe filled with a-holes. Seen to much of that crap to last me a lifetime...or two in my case.
Hell, let's take it up a notch and force any new MMO-member to go thru a series of social IQ tests, hehe. :police:

Gameplay wise I want it to be like the trilogy.

But, I want the character creation to be like DA, with different origins, and being able to choose your race.

Yes,  there will be games set in the Mass Effect universe after the trilogy.

Just not a direct continuation of the Shepard story, therefore there will not be a ME4, 5 etc.

I really don't think there will be any real Mass Effect games after the third installment at all. We will probably still get scripts, novels, and comics maybe, all of which take place after ME3 but have no direct connection with Shepard's story. I doubt we'll get anything more than that, to be honest.

Yeah, I know that there wont be more "Shepard games" after the trilogy, but I don't really see why there couldn't be a game called ME 4, even though you would be playing with a different main character.
Though personally I don't really care what the future Mass Effect games are called, as long there comes more of them.

"Rise of the Reapers" could be a interesting one, wont write the plot pitch for it since this a spoiler free zone.:D

I certainly dont want to see the Universe fade away after the trilogy with Shepard. I'd love for more games to continue.

I have mixed feelings about the idea of an MMORPG. While the universe that BioWare has created is certainly rich enough to warrant the idea of an MMO to be a possibility. One of the major points though of Mass Effect has always been your choices affect something, be they epic scale or something small. Maybe you dont see their chain reaction for days, maybe you dont see them until the next game. They are there though. In doing a MMORPG however, alot of "choices change everything" gets thrown out the window. Unless the game is entirely PvP it would never feel right. How many players can make Alliance origin characters that raid Cerberus bases before you start to wonder just how many freakin' Cerberus bases are there in the galaxy. Somehow I doubt there would be 1,00,000 + or however many Alliance players you end up with. How many Blue Sun bases can you raid before the group should have been wiped out? It works fine playing as Shepard and one person affecting the universe, but when there are thousands of people doing it?

Give me a huge open ended single player game. Pick my origin/race/sex Let me pick my allegiance be it Council, Cerberus, Independent, Mercenary, Etc. I can help the Council, work towards becoming a Spectre myself. Work for Cerberus, and take Miranda's old place as TIM's right hand. Become a space pirate like Jack suggested and terrorize the galaxy. Work on becoming an Information Broker that would put even the Shadow Broker to shame. Whatever the case may be. Let me build a squad and give me the option of making my squaddies more custom to how I want them skill wise. Keep their race/personality whatever the same for ease with the VAs, but give me a blank slate so I can make a Krogan Sniper, a Salarian Brawler, or a Turian Biotic Adept.

It has been confirmed, that after the "Shepard-trilogy" there will be more Mass Effect games. I've been thinking that since Bioware has created such an large universe, there could be room to make different kind of games that are placed in the ME universe.

A couple of ideas:
-FPS/RPG in the style of Deus Ex, maybe about a lone Spectre (since most of them apparently work alone)
-RTS in the style of Starcraft, maybe about the Rachni wars and the Krogan rebellions
-Squad based shooter in the style of Left 4 Dead, maybe about a group of N7-specialists
-Stealth based game in the style of Splinter Cell games, maybe about a lone Cerberus operative
-Space combat game in the style of  Freespace series, maybe about a fighter pilot in the first contact war
-and etc.

Basically the plot and style variations are pretty much endless. So should they branch out the Mass Effect universe with different kind of games, or would this ruin ME forever and they should just make ME games in the style of the current games.

GTA style of open world sandbox adventure based on Omega and Cidetal.

This could very well happen, sice Bioware are already doing the Kotor MMORPG for practice. Could be a great or very terrible game.

I can already picture it. The name of the players: Shep@rd, Shepard1, thetrueShepard, theoneandonlyShepard and of course Tali1 to Tali1000357.

Hehe - what about the ubiquitous I_M_Shepard followed very closely of course by the Krogan formally known as Urd_not_Shepard? :P

I would definetly like to see either a MMORPG set after the events of ME3 so you get to choose what race and class you want to be or a deux ex type of FPSRPG set in the time of captn Anderson, the revelation book story line where you can either chose to be the main protagonist or maybe like another Alliance recruit and maybe you bump into Anderson a few times during the story ..
