Homosexuality or same sex romance is a hotly debated topic on both the DAO and ME forums. Most of these topics however generally go off-topic and discuss homosexuality in real life. To solve that problem I decided to make this topic.

BUT PLEASE KEEP THIS DISCUSSION CIVIL. After browsing these forums the number of trolls, flamers etc. suprised me. I’m not sure if the people on these boards can handle a mature discussion. But please prove me wrong. Posted Image

Some interesting points that came up during the discussion on the ME boards:

1.  If homosexuality is a simple genetic defect, should it be cured?
2.  Why are lesbians more accepted than gays?
3.  Why do men like to see lesbian sex scenes and women gay sex scenes?
4.  Some people don’t like seeing two men cuddle, kiss etc. in public. Is that homophobia or a simple dislike for a certain sexual preference?
5.  The first homosexual character in any work made by BW was Imoen. In the, reviled, Baldur’s Gate novels she was a lesbian. Jade Empire was the first game that introduced a gay and lesbian romances. What  do you think about the way Bioware has tackled this issue so far?

Great that you created this thread, I hope that all the off topic bickering about this topic can be kept here.
This are my two cent about some of the points you brought up.

1 Most likely homosexuality is not a genetic "defect" it is way to common in both human and animal behavior to be considert a defect.
2. I dont think that they are, but the group that most soundly opposes homosexualty likes the idea of two woman together as inspiration for jacking of.
3. Two for the price of one ? Also there is no male competioner from the male pov. As for females usually any m/m stories they produce are very thinly veiled m/f fantasies so it is maybe a safe way to express desires that are to embaressing to admit to yourself.

Quick point: KoTOR had Juhani, and that was pre-Jade Empire.

Could you actually engage in a relationship with Juhani? I know she could express interest in female player characters, but I don't remember it being similar in depth to Bastila/Carth.  I really don't remember - it's been like, 6 years since I've played Kotor...

I really do need to replay Jade Empire. I think I tried it on my 360 and it ran a little funky, and my original xbox is a brick.

Right about Juhani. I didn't know about Imoen (didn't read those novels).

So, BW has introduced...

2 lesbian characters: Juhani and Imoen

1 gay male: Hendel Mitra in ME: Ascension

2 bisexual male characters: Sky and Zevran

3 bisexual female characters: Leliana, Liara, Silk Fox

I was impressed with the company for including homosexual/bisexual characters and allowing romances with them in some of their titles (KOTOR, JE, DA:O). I'm now worried that BW is trying to move away from more mature sexual themes which includes homosexuality and sexuality in general (I'm thinking about the ridiculous 'clothed' sex scenes in DA:O and ME2).

The Juhani romances wasn't as indepth as the others (parts of it were cut) but I'd still consider it one.  She admits her feelings to you in a touching scene near the end and you can return them or reject her.

There's no 'romance scene' like in ME2, but the other KOTOR romances really didn't have one either.

1.  It isn't a genetic defect, it's a survival mechanism.  The sexual behavior (enjoying sex for sex alone and not just for procreation) ensures that the species will continue to have sex and procreate.  The nurturing behavior (where two creatures of the same gender band together for survival or to raise offspring when no mate of the opposite gender is available usually due to death or disease) also ensures that the species will continue.
Homosexual behaviors have been observed in almost every mammalian species on earth, and quite a few birds and lizards.
Only one species has decided to criminalize and revile it; but then, humans do that with a lot of perfectly natural behaviors.  Not really a big surprise there.
2. Western cultures are more likely to find lesbians attractive because western cultures like the appearance of scantily clad women.  Middle east and African cultures are not because they consider the female body much differently.  They usually condemn lesbians as witches and stone them to death.
3.  See #2 - the West is not the whole world.  Not everyone likes lesbian sex scenes.  The movie Ghost was banned in a lot of countries for the "lesbian" sex scene.
4.  I have no idea why people don't like to see two attractive people cuddling, regardless of gender.  I can't wrap my mind around that, sorry.  Good looking bodies are good.  Two good looking bodies together is also good.
5.  I'll have to come back to that one later.

Totally forgot about Juhani... which I feel shameful for. She was my favorite party memeber for KOTOR outside of HK.

Back on topic:
I've also begun to notice how Bioware is taking a more timid approach to the issue of sexuality in general. It would appear that the big Fox News debacle about ME might have affected their choices more than we originally guessed.

I see nothing wrong with same sex relationships, why should there be? It happens in the animal world and are we not as humans animals? I am B-Sexual and see no problem loving both genders.Who's business is it anyway, mine and only mine.No one on this planet is any better than another person and only those with major character defects point out someone else's behavior as wrong or immoral.I ask according to who's standards. Why when we are all of the same species do we yet label others not the same as us. I care less if your gay, lesbian,Bi or trans-sexual.I care not if you have tattoos or piercings. If your happy then that's good, isn't life meant to be enjoyed and lived to its fullest? I think so.I care not what others think and me why should I. I am free and happy and content and unburdened by hatred,bigotry,******-phobia and a need to show or make others think I am superior when those attitudes and comments only show fear and the ability to be comfortably not only with others they don't know but uncomfortable with themselves for they hide a character flaw they don't want to face and so turn that fear by pointing to another not like them.

People that call others derogatory names and shout out slurs because of another's sexual preference are the small and weak and yet why do we still pay them heed.

I was always draw towards both sexes and why not,is not a flower beautiful no matter what kind it is.Its not a flaw, genetic or otherwise,I think its just me! I'm glad to be me and you be you and enjoy you and allow me the same courtesy as I give to you.

1.  If homosexuality is a simple genetic defect, should it be cured?

If it's proven to be that (there is evidence to support/contradict), then no. It's not a disease in any form and it does not affect one's quality of life.

2.  Why are lesbians more accepted than gays?
3.  Why do men like to see lesbian sex scenes and women gay sex scenes?

What do men have in their trousers?

4.  Some people don’t like seeing two men cuddle, kiss etc. in public. Is that homophobia or a simple dislike for a certain sexual preference?

Because it's not the cultural norm and it's still (even in countries where it's been accepted for decades) not a common sight. I wouldn't say it's homophobia but one "reason" often used is "I'm fine with their sexuality but I don't want to be slapped in the face with it", and to that end I think it should go for all public displays of affection. A hug or a peck in the lips is fine, but anything more and it's "get a room" time.

5.  The first homosexual character in any work made by BW was Imoen. In the, reviled, Baldur’s Gate novels she was a lesbian. Jade Empire was the first game that introduced a gay and lesbian romances. What  do you think about the way Bioware has tackled this issue so far?

BioWare are... Hmm, probably pioneers in their way of tackling relationships in games - Whether they're straight characters or not. I think their inclusion of homosexual romances is nothing more than them progressing naturally from that.
However, as the Mass Effect debacles have shown, it's become a trademark of their games and the non-inclusion (or catering just to FemShep in that regard) of homosexual romance options has been met with fan-controversy because it's been a staple part of a BioWare roleplaying game.

On the topic of the Baldur's Gate novels... they are considered Forgotten Realm canon, as they are officially recognized novels. That said, I do not consider them valid in terms of BioWare's track record for two reasons: firstly, the lead writer for Baldur's Gate 2 only wrote the Throne of Bhaal book, and I'm not even positive he was lead writer for BG2 & ToB; only kinda sorta. Imoen's sexuality comes to the fore in the second book, which he did not write. Secondly, the novel plot is only very loosely based on the game. There is zero mention of Imoen's sexuality one way or another throughout the entire CRPG series. The only time Imoen even brooches that subject is when she flirts with Keldorn as a joke. It clearly wasn't serious and can't be taken as a sign of heterosexuality or homosexuality. Basically, she could have any orientation, and unless the person that wrote her lines in BG2 tells me otherwise I don't consider her lesbian as a certainty. With all the story and character butchering they did in those horrific novels, I'm not about to take anything in them as word of god from BioWare.

1 - I don't consider it a defect. That renders the second part of this question moot.

2 - In western culture they are more accepted because as noted in a previous post written by another, men are infamous for finding arousal from sexual depictions of two or more women. Even then, it is only accept when the lesbians involved are considered attractive. Put a reasonably butch lesbian into that equation or a woman that isn't a runway model, and watch as any homophobes return to their usual antics. Flirting with the idea of being lesbian is also trendy nowadays. You see it in TV shows, publicity stunts, and the ocassional music video.

3 - This question would take too long to answer, and it isn't a universal truth anyway. I know at least one of my siblings would not be turned on by watching two men and I have met at least two men I can remember that claimed to dislike any sort of sex between homosexuals, regardless of gender.

4 - It could be homophobia. It could also be they don't like seeing couples interacting that way in public. It could be any number of things. However, I'm inclined to think homophobia in most situations. I suppose that makes me a tad prejudiced, but it's hard not to feel jaded after some of what I've seen or read about.

5 - I think BioWare has done okay so far. Just okay. I think they could do more in their games, but I realize their concern is to make a profit; not further social and political causes. I think they are unlikely to ever go for all out inclusion in their games simply because it isn't financially justifiable to them in terms of development costs versus ratio of players that will appreciate same sex content. At least that has been BioWare's company line on the topic. That, and their bosses may rein them in. It happened with Lucasarts forcing them to tone down Juhani's romance to near nonexistence. It may occur again now that they're under EA's umbrella. To read popular opinion on the interwebs, it has already occured with Mass Effect 2. That is of course, rumor.

OK, so they're not like the ME novels.  Thanks for clearing that up!

Even minus Imoen, I think BW has had a good track record in the past as far as including bisexual characters and homsexual romances in their titles.

I´m gona be fast:

1.- That follows the same  pattern as inteligent design theory. Bigotry and prejudice born from religious sources look better with some pseudo-science paint. Sumarizing, BS.

2.-It´s in general dependant on Western ideology where traditionaly, women are more allowed to be emotional than men. Thus when that emotionality takes one step more, it´s less terrifying. Interestingly enough, the "nefandous crime" is sodomy between men, but not sex between women.

3.-Though there are some common tendencies, what turn people on is generaly personal (though often times, sared). Two women (or men for the fact) don´t turn me on; stockings and heels in a lady, do.

4.- What is what they do not like? The fact that they kiss in public or the fact that they´re two people of the same sex? If it´s the first, it´s simple dislike (the causes can be varied); if it´s the second, it´s homophobia. Of course, the first case can be amplified from it coming from two people of the same sex adding an aditional layer of homophobia.

5.- Why not? Romance stories are often times beautiful, often times tragic and others, fun. Of course all previous can be possible. The fact that they´re same sex or or different is irrelevant.

"1.  If homosexuality is a simple genetic defect, should it be cured?"

It isn't, and no, even if it were.

"2.  Why are lesbians more accepted than gays?"

OnlyShallow89 said something about men having stuff in their trousers. I suppose that means that lesbians are more accepted because guys carry around cellphones. Posted Image

Honestly? I think guys like lesbians more than gays, and women like gays more than lesbians. Why? Men tend to like jug vs jug, and women like sword vs sword. Do I really need to say more?

"3.  Why do men like to see lesbian sex scenes and women gay sex scenes?"

Why do people eat and drink? Really, if you can't figure this one out on your own...

"4.  Some people don’t like seeing two men cuddle, kiss etc. in public. Is that homophobia or a simple dislike for a certain sexual preference?"

I don't know. There's a show called Brothers and Sisters, and there is a gay couple (Kevin and Scotty). I'm straight, and I don't care that they kiss/make out. I guess it just makes some people uncomfortable because it isn't "the norm".

"5.  The first homosexual character in any work made by BW was Imoen. In the, reviled, Baldur’s Gate novels she was a lesbian. Jade Empire was the first game that introduced a gay and lesbian romances. What  do you think about the way Bioware has tackled this issue so far?"

Well enough, I suppose, when compared to any other game developer. You can always do better, and BioWare should strive to do just that.

Yeah, on that point one:  sexual behavior, ******- or hetero- will have some basis in genetics. We know this because...everything does. Nature always has a say, though it may be pretty laconic on certain topics. I'm not talking simplistic determinism, mind you, but influence.  Genes influence all behavior in some fashion, because all development, including brain/CNS, is either outright genetically "programmed" or heavily influenced by our genes.  It will not be "a simple defect", or, for my money, even characterizable as a defect at all.  If it were a classical Mendelian trait, we'd have known it decades ago.  We're talking a lot of genes (anyone's guess really, and with an unknown number of alleles for each one) scattered across multiple chromosomes, almost certainly many of them of the regulatory variety (though of course protein coding sequences will be in the mix too) and pleiotropic and involved in multiple regulatory networks (very probably at rather different times, too), subject to a variety of maternal influences like hormone levels at particular stages of neural development, chemical gradients, and suchlike, epigenetic effects like imprinting, other mechanisms that probably no one's even thought of yet, and last but not least a bit of pure chance.  Good luck "curing" that.  You could quite easily manage to cure heterosexuality while you're at it. Two birds with one stone!  And who knows what else you'll alter? Exciting!

So your point is that genetics may influence the sexual apetites. Well, they also influence if your eyes are brown or blu though the actual outcome of our behaviour (and often times traits) is, by definition, fenotipical.

Still, homosexuality, bisexuality and so on are not "defects" as being vegetarian is not a "defect".

1. For one, assuming that it is genetic, why would it be a "defect"?  Is blonde or brown hair a defect?  Being gifted at an early age at piano or never being able to play the piano a defect?  To be a defect wouldn't it have to not just be a difference from a normative standard but also detrimental?
For two, while general scientific consensus is that sexuality is not a choice and not very changeable, there is no proof whether it is genetic or not yet.
As for a cure, can we cure people of spiritual belief?  Because there's that God center in the brain we could just lobotomize (that science does have a pretty good theory of where it is caused in the brain - http://www.bbc.co.uk...odonbrain.shtml) ...
kidding.
mostly.
2. Very tough question, which has many pat but unsatisfying answers.  Many cultures have the notion that girls at young ages go through a phase (usually cultures that separate boys and girls, like at boarding schools.)  There's the wrongheaded notion that because some men enjoy watching girls make out that it makes it more acceptable.  I think there's probably something about machismo, about men having to be big tough men and if they like penis suddenly they aren't manly.  When it comes down to it I don't know that lesibiansim IS more accepted, I just think that current cultural norms (especially in the USA) that are based on a largely male-dominated entertainment industry allows the exploitation of lesbianism to happen more.
Plus, you know, when girls want to stand out at a party and get the attention of guys making out with a girlfriend works wonders.  If two guys start making out it rarely attracts a hoard of screaming women.
rarely
3. I could be wrong on this, but I'm fairly certain its at least the stereotype that men are stimulated visually more than women are, in general.  Anecdotal experience as well as what exposure I've had in the news media would lead me to think that men are (in general, again) more inclined to want to watch women make out than women are in watching men make out.
Why do guys like watching girls make out?  1 - two women instead of one to focus on; 2 - the taboo sensation; 3 - no fear of seeing a penis
4. Unless they dislike seeing any PDA, then yes it is homophobia.  Initial uncomfortableness at something you've never experienced before is one thing, but if you can never stand seeing guys make out but don't care about hetero or lesbian couples, then yes, it's homophobia.
If you dislike seeing any PDA you are either a following of a strict religious set of rules OR you are a very lonely and jealous person.
usually those two go together
5. Others have mentioned Juhani.  Dragon Age dives headlong into this issue with no regrets!  There was that controversy with Star Wars and the Bioware forums a few years back ( the "there is no homosexuality in Star Wars") so they haven't always handled this the best way.  Mass Effect 1 is another example.  Universe explanations aside, they created a race of bisexual interspecies aliens, all female.  They are not "asexual", they are female but need no male for reproduction.  Their bodies are female, their voices are female, they use terms like Matriarch and mock terms like Patriarch - they are female.  So when they try and skirt the issue as they often due about "there's not homosexuality in Mass Effect" I cry BS.  WHATEVER they want to say about asari, the female Shepherds attracted to Liara are attracted to the voice, form, culture and personality of a blue female.  The female Shepherd's actions in this case are homosexual actions.
So big kudos for allowing in many of their games the female (and on the one game, male) homosexual encounters in ways that are (mostly) not offensive.  But thumbs down on the PR and community handling of such topics.

1. not a defect, so shouldn't be cured.
2. tough one to answer. there is more of an expectation that men be "tough". a common stereotype of being gay is it is not "tough" or macho. the macho thing to do is then considered to be having a heterosexual relationship with a woman.
3. i think it has to do with sexual attraction. watching two people a man could potentially be sexually attracted to having sex or just being very physical and intimate with each other is a turn on to many straight men (i must admit it is a turn on for me :D).
4. while i am completely in favor of gay rights and support gay marriage as well, i must admit that watching two men cuddling or being intimate is uncomfortable for me to watch. i don't think it is homophobia. it's just not being comfortable with something that is not familiar. those who would bring up being comfortable with lesbians, i refer you to #3.
5. i think bioware has handled this well.  they maintain a nice balance with their characters. in general, they avoid stereotype gay characters and so the game has a more inclusive feel to it.

1. I don't really think homosexuality is genetic defect, but it isn't natural
2. Lesbians are hot!
3. I guess it's because lesbian porn is "the thing you like"x2
4. I don't mind gay people, but it's kinda disgusting to me (well, lesbians are hot, guys not)
5. They're all optional, so I don't really care. I see no reason why they shouldn't put gay romance in all of their games

>1. If homosexuality is a simple genetic defect, should it be cured?

20000-30000 years ago I'd have said yes because we needed everyone to keep our species alive. Today we populate too fast so the abundance of gays/lesbians may be natures way of balancing.

> 2. Why are lesbians more accepted than gays?

A Lesbian isn't a far stretch from a non lesbian. Both cuddle with female friends, touch each other and do gay stuff like wash each other's hair and compare wax jobs. Men have unwritten men rules which we abide by and follow to become a man since we're young boys. Being gay disregards these rules and says that they can all be useless because being a Man isn't anything special anymore. I'm not a woman so I don't know how women feel about butch women but I'm a man, vocal and opinionated and since I express my like/dislike more, it'll come out that I don't like them much more than a women doesn't like them.

> 3. Why do men like to see lesbian sex scenes and women gay sex scenes?

Not all sex scenes, just ones with babes. In the case of the scene being 2 hardcore butch lesbians who are acting like guys then it's gross and us men don't like it. Women, feminine, sensual, softer, less dominant. Those are things which we see women as and in a normal lesbian scene all that remains intact except it's doubled up which is attractive to men who love women for those qualities.

4. Some people don’t like seeing two men cuddle, kiss etc. in public. Is that homophobia or a simple dislike for a certain sexual preference?

It is a taboo act. It's like seeing a man and woman kiss in public when you've been living in Yemen your whole life. A man being kissed by another man relays a message of weakness and feminine qualities, that is not how we want to see ourselves. I'm a man and this used to affect me, mainly because I wasn't raised to consider girly men as normal. Now that I understand there are girly men, I don't feel offended because they're not men who became traitors against what us traditional men stand for, they are a new type of men, it'd be easier if we came up for a new term instead of 'men' because that's the reason we fight about it.

5. The first homosexual character in any work made by BW was Imoen. In the, reviled, Baldur’s Gate novels she was a lesbian. Jade Empire was the first game that introduced a gay and lesbian romances. What do you think about the way Bioware has tackled this issue so far?

I think they did a great job in DA:O. You didn't have any preconceived notions about how a male elf should be so when he wasn't manly it was normal. When he ended up being gay it was funny. If in the game the head warden ended up being gay then it'd be bad because he was represented as a man and to discredit that manliness would be offensive to men.
