David vs Goliath aspect.

Would it be as tense, let's say if the Jock overcame Jason Vorhees through sheer muscle and won the day?

No.

True. But I often hope that the weak characters die. Eh.

I'm not looking to "beat" you or for you to apologize, but I am just stating my opinion in that that sort of thinking - a male soldier is overdone and boring and a female soldier is fresh and exciting! by nature of gender is flawed as some of the LOL WOMAN CAN'T BE SOLDIER!

Mm. And by my opinion, I meant that it would be nice if things were evened up, not that one was better than the other. Neither one is fresh, or exciting. I even think back to Athena among those I recognize as female warrior. It just bothers the crap out of me that things are so disproportioned.

I can agree on this.

Cool, because a kitten just settled in my lap and I have a feeling that my posts would've turned into even more warlgarbl as a result.

You're right. It'll probably have the same effect as watching that clip in The Ring.

Personaly I like the male shep, if only because the voice fits the face I made perfectly.

I will say one thing here: while I'd really like there to be more heroines in movies, games etc, a lot of heroines out there I find personally annoying, and I'm a girl. I honestly don't like the type of heroine that's all like I AM WOMAN HEAR ME ROAR or I AM SUCH A BAD-ASS AND I CAN DO ANYTHING MEN CAN!1!! It just feels like they think they have something to prove when they don't.

The best heroine I've ever come across is Ripley from the Alien series. If they made a ME movie and stuck a FemShep in that was like Ripley, I would die happy. That said, I think FemShep is pretty good in the game. She's not really overly sexual, neither is she annoying or tries to act all tough.

True, heroines that just act as c*ck-teases are really pointless irritating sterotypes for film makers to point at and say "look at how enlightened we are".

It's all relative, really.

You want to play as a female character? Go ahead. You'd rather be a dude? Do it.

The strength of the character is what makes a character ordinary or overdone.

It's not just that, as the cliche can involve a combination of traits. Combination of strong soldier + male gender is much more frequent than strong soldier + female gender, hence one is correctly identified as cliche. You can't say the same about the other because:

And if you think female soldier badasses are new, you need to go back and watch Aliens. They've been doing it for over 20 years now.

... when you can only cite a single movie as example of that and have to dig back 20 years to find it, it is anything *but* a cliche Image IPB

(there's a few more movies with 'female soldier' theme but they pretty much revolved around examining this very situation, the aberration that is female soldier and potential drama it causes, or they couldn't refrain from flaunting the sexuality of the character in some manner. Both being quite different from what Aliens and ME did/are doing)

Hale's VO is more emotional, but sometimes it sounds misplaced.  She also does a better job at delivering her lines in a way that hook together into a continuous dialogue.

Meer's VO is more "bland" delivering the paragon lines, but he sounds like he's having fun delivering renegade lines.  I didn't find his delivery to be inappropriate at any point in the game.

I can play and enjoy both manshep and femshep, but would choose "bland" over misplaced inflection.

You summed up my thoughts on the matter perfectly.  Both voice actors do a great job, but Hale's misplaced emotion and voice inflections bother me quite a bit.

Meer did much better in ME2.

I prefer Meer for Renegade and Hale for Paragon. She does good guy well, he does bad guy well.

No it is sexist.

Saying that somehow playing as a male invalidates the worth of that character is offensive.

What the hell are you talking about!  It isn't degrading to men at all, especially when it comes to how women have been treated!  This is the era where we have strong women who don't need aman to hold on to!  Idiot!

This. Ripley is probably among the best sci-fi heroes out there. The way her gender factors into her strength I think, at least in Aliens, is in her motherly instincts. Near the end when she's going into the hive and the elevator door opens, the music dies down, and for a moment you just see her standing there with that flamethrower as alarms go off... That's a pissed off mother grizzly and you don't want to get in her way. Not once however does Ripley ever need to 'show up' any of the men around her. It makes her much more confident as a character concept.

I am a man. In RPGs I usually play male characters (in fact, in every RPG apart from BioWare games, where I give a try to the female ones too for getting special dialogue. However, I never managed to play Dragon Age with a female char).

The voice acting is good. Jennifer's and Mark's performance give us different peaks on the character, that's true.

A female heroine can be attractive without being sexual. They can run around gunning people down and causing explosions, they can do absolutely nothing different from a male hero, but they can still be attractive on more than just a "Hur hur hur, boobs" level.

FemShep's VA won me over too. When I play a MaleShep now it feels a bit off. He's better in ME2, but I still prefer FemShep. It's just a preference and arguing about it just doesn't make sense. It would be cool if she got better animations in ME3, though. Her walking looks a bit clunky. ;)

I have a hard time getting used to playing the male Shepard. I myself am a man and usually pick female characters. Don't know why. Well I do, if I have to look at someone while playing I'd rather it'd be a sexy woman than some dude.

At any rate to me the voice actress of the female Shepard is awesome no matter your playing style (paragon or renegade). The male Shepard's voice is not as daunting as I'd like it to be, plus it sounds like he's just reading his lines. Playing a renegade male Shepard even makes the game ridiculous. He sounds like a little kid trying to cause a ruckus instead of the bad-as.s. you want him to be. Female Shepard says everything like she means it. Male Shepard doesn't really seem to care.

Anyone else have this experience?

Another "femShep is so much better than maleShep, Jeniffer Hale rulez!"-thread, how suprising...

I've seen one to many threads about this and it's kinda getting anoying really.

Well, good for you you don't like maleShep and think Jeniffer Hale is better than Mark Meer. I bet some people will agree with you, and some (like me) won't. In the end, it all comes to personal preference.

End of thread.
