I agree I think both voice actors did a great job. In fact I'd go as far as to say there wasn't any bad acting at all from any of the VA's in any of the trilogy. When I first got the games I did mostly male playthroughs but in more recent times I'd say I've done more female ones. But I think both Jen and Mark did a great job in the role of Shepard. IMO it's pretty clear hey both know what they're doing.

I will take exception to "no bad acting." I thought Udina's portrayal felt off. I also felt Marina Sirtis did a mediocre job of delivering some - admittedly - poorly written lines.

For me, it depends on the character generator and the voice acting. I found the maleshep's voice meh, but I liked femshep's voice.

I could not for the life of me get a good looking maleshep. I got some passable ones, but never one I truly was satisfied with the look of, so I kept redoing it over and over and over again. Finally made one that I could sort of tolerate, who romanced Jack.

I found it easy to make good looking femsheps, so I made a bunch of them. One for Garrus, one for Thane, and one for Liara (once the Shadowbroker DLC went live).

Yeah I struggle with male ones too. Most of my female ones turn out really nice though but then I always tend to try to make my femsheps attractive anyway as I did with my first Inquisitor in DAI too but then I used my last femshep to form the basics for that. I don't look to get things 100% perfect anyway as very few humans look that way anyway most have some imperfection no matter how small.

They seemed OK to me but then everyone has their own opinion. Although tbh I felt Udina was a bit of a jerk in all 3 games anyway but then based on how he ended up after the Cerberus coup I guess that's how he was meant to be. I had a feeling that at some point in the trilogy something bad would happen to him as he had been kind of asking for it.

With Marina I think she's just used to playing the good guy rather than the evil one based on her work in Star Trek TNG. They may have been better off using Kate Mulgrew as Benezia given how well she did with Flemeth in DA. It wouldn't have taken much to make her sound evil. No disrespect to the actress sa she's good at what she does and I love her work as Janeway in Voyager but voice wise it might have worked better . Marina did do as good a job as she could have done though I think.

Meer I think is the overall better choice. Hale does better with paragon dialogue, and Meer does better with renegade.

I think Hale did too much of a deep, raspy voice. I think she should have used the voice she used for Jean Grey in Wolverine and the X-men.

And I think FemShep should have had a British accent.

I think they squeezed out of Meer better voices for Salarians and Vorcha than Shepard.

I prefer MaleShep, can't seem to like FemShep, don't know why... It just feels strange her voice, plus after playing countless MaleShep Playthroughs... Just my opinion, no nonsense of her being a female, that said, she made an awesome work voicing Bastila "The force fights with me" :D

Also, some people prefer Meer's other voices, like the Hanar and the Vorcha. On a side note, I lol'ed when we got Spectre Blasto Vs Spectre MaleShepard in Citadel DLC, something I couldn't do with Hale, since she has a different voice than Blasto...

Like above, IMO, there are some moments players think that one voice Actor did better than the other.

I usually make shep as a male. Not that one actors performance is better than the other. I just find FemShep's voice to be annoying after a while.

I think they both did a great job, however, Hale does it for me. I'm on my fifth femshep play-through and still not tired of her voice.

Yes, this. TBH, I only started a FemShep Playthrough to say that I did at least ONE FemShep Playthrough...

Now for the classes... You believe In all these years, I've only played as Soldier or Adept? Lol.

I play male Shepard cause im a man and identify with being a man. I dont identify with beign a women, and theres a time and place for wanting to look at something pretty, im playing a game for crap sake, also im not a beta male in RL.

I just cant take it seriously when a female Shepard puches out or rifle butts someone to death, sorry thats just me........AND REALITY!

I dont identify as a woman but I can identify with a woman as in I can relate to them as another human being/person. I fail to understand the mindset of an individual who cannot play as a character of a particular sex.

What is so different about the two when it comes to gaming? This stuff isn't real. Shepherd goes toe to toe with a freaking yahg in a fist fight ffs and only succeeds due to their cybernetic enhancements. A normal human would have gotten rocked. Male included.

Is it so hard to believe that a cyborg female can kick ass? Ever heard of Major Motoko Kusanagi from the Ghost In The Shell series?

Let's get the racism thing out of the way people. Many of you are over-analyzing. It has to do with personal preference. And as for with me being a heterosexual white guy being odd in the context it is not in fact. I cannot identify with a black man, but only with a white man. That might be a shortcoming on my end, but that's just the way it is.

The problem is I already knew Jacob was fanservice when he entered the screen for the first time. That plus the fact that the female Shepard can't have a decent platonic talk with him without telling him to shut up is also what annoyed me. She's either allover him or she hates him.

I even picked Jacob to enter the crawling section because I thought he would be best suited for the job. Didn't know he would die if you picked him...

At any rate the female Shepard should be allowed to romance either Tali or Miranda. Event hough I dislike Miranda's face (yeah I'm a racist against white people too!), I'd rather have her than any of the choices the female Shepard has in ME2.

You say you can only identify with white men? Are non white men so fundamentally different that you find it impossible to relate to them as another person/human being? Is skin color really that big an issue to you or is it something else? Certain behaviors that you associate with his people maybe?

Please help me to understand.

I never played a female Shepard - until yesterday.

I usually try to play "RENEGADE," and although the male Shepard's voice is "OK," I always thought it lacked a menacing edge.

My female Shepard has a voice that plays great as a "RENEGADE."  I don't know if I can call it menacing, but it is a definitely more "EDGY" voice.  I think the female voice does a lot better job of conveying anger, irritation, and disdain than the male voice (I will admit that I find the male voice more pleasant for normal conversations and niceties).  The female Shepard voice just sounds "TOUGHER."

Early in the game, after Shepard, Jacob, and Miranda make their getaway in the Shuttle, Shepard "meets" The Illusive Man for the first time.  After that, Shepard has a chance to talk to Miranda, and the line, "Are you always this bitc*y, or is it just me?" is delivered perfectly.  There are other instances in which I found the female voice to be awesome early in the game, but that moment with Miranda stands out.  I can't wait to see how CATTY things could get between my female Shepard and Miranda!

I wish I had played as a female Shepard earlier.

I always play as a male in video games...so maleshep for me. As smb already mentioned, i cant connect with female protagonist and the game seems boring

Though i tried playing as a female for romance options, and yeah Hale seems to be overacting sometimes and the fact that femshep doesnt have a real face model makes her look too cartoonish for me.

I have 4 male & 3 female shepard's. I never felt like Jennifer Hale voice worked with any of my 3 female shepard's, and honestly worse with each installment. While in1 she was fine, unfitting with my shepard's but fine performance. By the time of 3 she just sounded like she was stoned, most of the time.

Mark Meer followed the opposite path, I think, and I found his voice always fitted regardless. In 1 he may have been a (little) bland, but his performances got better with each installment.

So with voice actors, I'm on Meerside.. Meer. 's. side.

Though I love my 2nd female shepard (3rd overal, though the 2nd I've completed the entire game with), especially when I "upgraded" her in the ME3 CC, and changed her personality to be more a mix of my 2 femsheps. She's the most beautiful & coolest female Shepard ever, don't try to say otherwise.. (;

Honestly, I remember the main reason why I choose to play FemShep was that I've been playing a LOT of male characters in all my entire 26 years in life and I can count how many female main characters I've played that has a voice of her own especially in an RPG. That was saddening.  I am a woman. I have no problem reading books written by men with main male protagonist or playing a male character in games. I can enjoy playing male characters and them romancing the woman or man they love with no problem. Its role playing.

The thing is, BroShep is too much like every other male game characters... A badass gun-trotting space soldier/pirate with clever lines and all the girls loves him and he saves the galaxy in streaks... yay.... predictable. But we live in a world that banned woman from being in front lines combat, while female soldiers is a norm in ME verse but isn't it strange that there's no human female soldiers in the cutscenes or them dying except for the ones you hear through your coms. FemShep is a commando working in a field that was still largely dominated by men. Its not just about differences with voice roles... the whole narrative for FemShep is different.

FemShep defied her societal expectation while it was expected for BroShep. One of the example in game, curing the genophage might seems like a normal save the galaxy mission for Shepard but for Eve, it was the fight for her right as a person and the rights of all Krogan female. For them to be seen more than just a breeding machine or to be seen more than their infertility that reduce their role as a decoy to protect breeding females. Wrex and Mordin knew about this and that's why they work hard for this to happen which was to liberate the women of Tuchanka. That's why its easier for FemShep to bond with Eve as they're both powerful woman who shared the burden of carrying the fate of their people in a world full of men. Its not that BroShep aren't allowed to have feminist attitude but his narrative doesn't challenge a lot of the norms that FemShep do.

MaleShep is my choice.

As to the voice acting BroShep got better over the trilogy, whereas FemShep's voice is really, really annoying after a while.

And someone mentioned  Marina Sirtis?  I think she phoned it in, so to speak, especially the part where she struggles with the indoctrination. I always cringe a little at that part and fast forward the dialogue now.

I always alternate between trilogy runs.  Right now have a male soldier, next up is a female sentinel.

I like them both, so I alternate depending on what kind of game I want to play. What I find fascinating is how the voice acting progresses throughout all three games. I felt that Jennifer Hale delivered a Shepard who would stay tough yet full of heart and soul but, by Mass Effect 3, becomes so battle fatigued that she's emotionally drained and only endures through sheer willpower alone. Mark Meer, on the other hand, sounded as this tough yet diligent officer who, by Mass Effect 3, also becomes battle fatigued but he reacts differently - the mask of the professional marine cracks and the emotions that were bottled up start surfacing. Not any less badasses, yet both very human - and that's okay in my book when I play. :)

I've yet to play a maleShep, though I might at some point.

I play femShep because I can. Mass media is supersaturated with stories of male action heroes - for every Xena, there are hundreds of Hercules, for every Buffy a legion of Angels. Thus, given an opportunity to play through a story starring a heroic female who beats the odds, I'll usually take it.

For some reason, I can't complete a Mass Effect game with a FemShep, I start losing interest after a while, but I'm always having that urge to try again, again and again. Goddamnit, I hate myself.

I have played them both, but greatly prefer FemShep.    Usually I only play the males to experience some of the gated romance arcs, but the rest of the story I feel is far more compelling as a female.

Far better voice inflections portraying actual emotions instead of just a near continuous monotone.  If the next mass effect would kindly remove the gender restrictions on relationships... I would never play a Male character again.
