I know there are a bazillion threads on this character and it's sure to annoy people to see ANOTHER ONE but I figured I'd contribute my own drop in the pond for what it's worth, because it's something I realized while playing ME2, and maybe the Bioware folks might find this a fun read. If you're sick of reading about Tali just move along, nothing to see here.

I never had a "thing" for her in ME1. She was interesting, that was it. Her dialog options never even hinted at the possibility of a personal relationship, and I never suspected nor desired it. There was a distinct cultural divide between her and Shep, or maybe Humans and Quarians altogether. Her story was fascinating, the Quarian story is fascinating, but I never found her alluring.

In my view, your other squadmates, even the aliens, seem based on or have close approximations with prototypes that exist within our own world. Liara, for instance, certainly plays on a generalized idea of wholesome femininity, and the warmth and sophistication associated with it. She's the cute librarian nerd we all had a crush on at some point in our lives. Wrex is your team's tank, the shotgun wielding ogre, the "big guy", very simple, very blunt, obtuse even. Garrus is the ex-cop, "Robin Hood" of C-Sec, plenty of street cred, gone maverick because he can't keep his mouth shut about status quo, wants to do the right thing but hates jumping through hoops.

We have real world templates for all of these characters in ME, both 1 and 2, and the writers do an extremely awesome job in crafting these characters so that we can identify with them, and care for them. I especially love Samara. I know other people complain that some of ME2's characters fall a little flat, but I personally can't endorse that opinion.

But Tali? It hit me while playing ME2 that she is truly in a class all of her own. My wife made a comment about her last week: "She's not even all that feminine... look at how she walks, it's like she just got off a horse." I had to laugh but then I realized that this character feels made totally from scratch, like she came out of thin air. I can't think of any single real-world notion, metaphor, race, culture, prototype, stereotype even, for Tali whatsoever. For me, Tali seems more like ME's poster icon than the male Shep we see on the cover of the game because of her originality and how confined it is within the ME brand. I mean, I don't think there's anything else like this character anywhere else.

I might be totally wrong in this... there might be another videogame or something out there that she's based on that I haven't been acquainted with. But for me, as soon as I realized how unashamedly unique of a character Tali was, that was it... she's my favorite character in the game now. I've been shamelessly assimilated into the Tali fan ranks.

She's obscure, even haunting, elusive, she's a leather-clad DIY eezo-wielding mechanic with hips of death, unabashedly Sci-Fi, her voice actress with the accent ramped up also contributes to the total Tali package, and... well... I just think the writing team, the artists, and the animators all met in the middle and nailed her concept so squarely on the head and brought something so utterly brand new to us that, in my mind, they created an icon.

There's my confession. Flame on.

Interesting point of view. Never really thought of it like that, but I do agree with what you said.

A very insightful post of you, and I agree entirely, kinda goes with her undeterminable accent.

Yep I totally agree especially when juxtaposed with the Quarian story. Enlightening even.

I gotta be honest, I LOVE Tali. Just not as an li. In ME 1, I came to think of her as a little sister type. I loved her, I just didn't want my Shep to bone her. In ME 2 I was disappointed with the direction they took for her. I'm all for the Talimance option for those of you who do like her that way, but don't kill the Gibbs-Abbey (NCIS reference) thing I imagined either.

Yeah, I think that sums it up quite nicely. She's a character that feels like they've really spent a lot on. Out of all the aliens, she's the one that always felt the most tangible.

Agreed. Loved her, but never LOVED her. And I HATED having to turn her down. That blew.  If you don't have a romance with her I do hope BioWare go further into your relationship as friend / family.

I kind of have to agree with the OP - it is damn difficult to find some kind of niche for Tali, apart for perhaps the gypsie community, which is the kind of life Tali lives. The gypsie community is also quite secluded and isn't too happy to let others in.

But this topic is more interesting from another point of view than the old Tali: why are so many species in the Mass Effect universe so much like humans?

Actually, I'm going to start another thread about that instead of derailing this one.

I agree that this is definitely an interesting conversation piece, and I like how the writers deal with this (albiet ambiguously) within the grand scheme of things.

Lol. Did you try to tell her it was too dangerous only to get hit with the "oh crap" moment when she comes back with research on how it would be possible.

I was cursing at Bioware for not allowing me to let her down easily.

I seriously hope she hooks up with Kal'Reegar. Love that dude.Posted Image

YES!! Fark it was frustrating when the only options were , yes, maybe yes or "NOT INTERESTED". How about not ending up there at all?

Tali and Kal'Reegar should get get together. And you can give her away at her wedding because <snip snip snip snip, no spoilers allowed>.

You dont find her the nervous Senior-Sophmore fling or the charming little sis.

I thought these were obvious.

Yeah I can definitely see that, and that's what it was when Shep took her under his/her wing in ME1. I guess that didn't feel like an overall character template to me though, more of just the the isolated circumstances surrounding her recruitment in ME1. When you meet her in ME2, she's grown way beyond that "kid on the pilgrimage" aspect, and you kinda see her with new eyes.
