I'll bet the rest of the ME1 people remain absent even though I would love to hunt down the shadow broker in order to recruit Liara

I wouldn't be surprised if Thane, Mordin, Samara, and Grunt left since they seem like they might have other responsibilities to attend to.

Liara is the only squaddie that cannot die in both games. Ash or Kaiden can die, you can shoot Wrex, then Tali, Garrus and the rest of the Suicide Misson buddies can die. Liara's status as unkillable means she'll likely be important in ME3.

Thane could die from his Illness, and Samara could leave because he helped you stop the collectoers and she either considers her job finished or Bioware could just say it was something in her code. (As bad of a cop out as the last idea sounds, it could happen)

Mordin could return to his clinic, or die of old age I guess (Pretty sure he's very old for a Salarian)

Grunt really has no reason to leave though, as if you did his loyalty quest, you're his battlemaster, and what better enemy than the machines that have wiped out space faring life countless times? He's really the only one of the last four you list I couldn't see a GOOD reason for him to split.

I think filistimo wanted this thread to be a discussion about whether or not SHEPARD would want to involve any of his squadmates in his future battles against the Reapers; or if the SQUADMATES would want to remain in Shepard's team.

Any speculation as to what BIOWARE will want to do with them is not really relevant, from an in-game perspective.

Also, as players, we tend to color Shepard's character with ours, without keeping in mind that Shepard's background is dramatically different from ours. Few of us are War Heroes or Sole Survivors... so our personal preference (as a player) for any particular squadmates is also irrelevant to this topic.

I hope we get more interesting characters in ME3, since all the ones from ME2 could have perished depending on how you resolve the main plot.

I'd rather have Kal Reegar than Tali as the token quarian for instance.

Posted Image Yeah, I know... Perhaps I'm too reasonable... but I still think this topic raises an interesting discussion. And there's already plenty of good "metagame" discussion threads already, each arguing more vocally than the next in favor of the return of <insert fave squadmate name here> as a squadmate in ME3...

This trend is kinda like asking the characters' opinion on their future plans... a sadly overlooked viewpoint in most forums.

Liara probably would WANT to rejoin the Normandy though. It doesn't seem to slow Miranda down from talking to her contacts. She doesn't really seem to be enjoying herself on Ilium and can do research onboard. She's got to meet with contacts, right? Wouldn't it be better and much, much safer if she were doing so on the Normandy with Shepard at her side?

It'd be really weird to write her out of the story by making her sit behind a desk while the Reapers destroy the galaxy. Plus, if she's in love with Shepard, I find it hard to believe she'd sit around while the Commander possibly gets killed again.

I think the overall consensus is that most ME fans have reach "the people we care about" threashold. I am sure Bioware can squeeze in a few more. But with the cast of 12 (once Kasmumi pops out) and ME cast that did not join your squad this time (Liara, Wrex, Ash/Kai) we have reached the limit of people we will give a rat's ass about. Also new characters in ME3 will be at a disadvantage. It is the last part of the triology. Who would want to get attached to someone that will reach the end of the story in 40 hours or so of gameplay. People are far more interested in seeing closure and their old cast come back. Both ME1 loyalists and ME2 turncoats (hehehe, I don't mean that offensively, I am just being a big jerk).

No. not at all. I'd like to see Garrus and my engineer Shep spend the rest of their lives running around being a couple of wannabe paladins together, saving the world one situation at the time. Garrus thrives on it anyway. That's also the ending I go for in Dragon Age. Me and Alistair gloriously slaughtering darkspawn until it's time for the Deep Roads.

Tali fans- Wouldn't you rather see her raised to the Admiralty and, after being largely absent the whole game, show up in the nick of time- with the whole Quarian fleet- during the final assault?

Nope, sorry. I'd rather work with Tali directly in game to negotate a peace with the Geth, get them back their homeworld to put their non-combat personnel on and gain both the Migrant Fleet, and the Geth working together during the final assault.

Doing things with me is far superior to doing things offscreen.

How awesome would a cut scene of the entire migrant fleet removing their helmets back on their homewrold be?

I am pretty sure that Bioware has stated somewhere that Kadan/Ash, Liara and Wrex (if you didn't kill him on Virmire) return in ME 3. I'll have to do some searching around to find the interview.

As for the rest of the team mates, we'll have to see. Bioware hasn't stated anything regarding them other than they can all die in ME 2.

*Edit* After some attempted and failed google fu, turned to my husband who has stronger google fu than I and we found the interview.

malevolente:
I hope I'm not spoiling anything for anyone, but the devs have stated
that all squadmates (and Shepard) can die at the end of ME2. Or
everyone can survive. And given that Ashley or Kaidan could die in ME,
wouldn't that make having a squad in ME3 of any of the squadmates from
both games (except Liara) difficult? Are you still considering this
option, or is an entirely new squad likely to be present in ME3? I'm
sure that putting ME2 and ME squadmates on the backburner for the final
installment of...

CaseyH-ME2:
Yes, it's definitely difficult to continue the fiction when we allow
major characters to be **bleep**ed off by player actions. But, that's
part of the fun, and the impact of major consequences. One reason that
the love interests were not recruitable in ME2 (but are still part of
the story) is that they need to be around for the ongoing story in ME3.

Honestly Tali as an admiral would be bad fanfiction. You don't make admirals out of 24 year girls with no actual leadership ability or experience. Admirals are 50 year old dudes who have been in the military for decades. Well to be honest most of the quarian admirals didn't really seem like actual military officers but still.

Perhaps, but keep in mind we haven't been told all of Liara's story over the 2 years Shepard was believed KIA. Keep in mind she may have fallen in love with someone else, in which case any feeling Shepard may have for her may well be unrequieted. Perhaps the reason Liara hates the Shadowbroker so much is because his agents murdered her "friend" (i.e. lover).

That doesn't mean Liara wouldn't go back to Shepard in ME3 if that was the case... Asari are used to outliving their mates, after all... their attitude may differ somewhat from humans in that respect.

Hey, you wanted Shepard to date an alien who can live over 1000 years? Don't expect her to view relationships like a human! Posted Image She might still turn Shepard down for the ME3 mission if she feels her hunt for the Shadowbroker is more important.

If you let them go, how can you send them to their deaths?

Ashley take this grenade belt and run towards those collectors.

Kaidan, hug this Cain round and charge.

Liara maintain a singularity over your head so all the thrown weapons get sucked towards you. (and please don't stand near me)

Tali, overcharge the engines and ram the Reapers ship after i've ejected my escape pod.

Garrus, take out your assault rifle and stand sholder to sholder with Jacob. I need someone to block the shots at me.

Grunt, charge the collectors to draw their fire. Jack climb onto Grunts head and start shockwaving.

Legion, stuff these explosives into that hole you have in your chest then run over to that harbinger possessed collector there.

Thane, you're going to die anyway so dance a smurf dance to draw fire away from me.

Samara and Miranda, run in front of me as i move to the escape pod then cover me while i eject the escape pod.

Shepard - a man whose glory is built on dead comrades. But who cares? There's no witnesses anyway

Bring back my squad. My Shepard worked hard to put the greatest team together so that he can beat the Reapers. On my second playthrough (which, weirdly, was from my first ME1 playthrough) I saved the whole team. Now I want my ME2 team to come together with Ashley/Kaidan and Liara plus possibly one or two more new squad members (new - meaning characters we have already met in ME1 and ME2 but weren't Squad members but will be recruitable in ME3) and it's time to go destroy a Reaper fleet. After we're done, then I'll understand if most everyone goes there separate ways but not until then.

I left Wrex out of the mix, because even though I saved him in all my ME1 playthroughs, he's leading the Krogan and I'm gonna need him leading an army of Krogan in the final battle against the Reapers, however Bioware has us play that final battle out.

I'm not making hard speculations here. I'm just trying to posit scenarios where fans of a given character might want something different  for their favorite character from their presence on the mission.

I was trying to generate a new perspective from which to discuss the intersection of the main story and the individual character arcs. Apparently, I sorely underestimated my ability to communicate it effectively.

I was hoping to start a discussion about a forest, but I elicited a discussion about bark and chloroplasts and wood.

Can't bring myself to agree with that, though if we weren't saving the galaxy it would be a different story. Garrus feels that it's his duty to make the galaxy a better place, but what is the point of that if it's about to be destroyed  by the Reapers? Even had his squad not been wiped out I believe he would have followed Shepard in order to "do some good" (his words not mine). Plus when you think about it, Garrus is with Shepard for the first game, and the second game, how could he even think of missing the chance to fight along side him/her once more to save the GALAXY from the REAPERS? And so he could do what? Spend two more years throwing together another rag-tag band of misfits? I highly doubt it!

Hell even his last words (if you make him the second fire team leader and he dies) are "Sorry, Shepard. Wont be with you at the end. Snipe one for me, would you?" Sure he possibly just meant the end of the suicide mission, but if you wanna read between the lines, I'm sure he meant the very end the final battle, and all that good stuff.

Sorry if I'm ranting but the idea of him not being a squad member in ME3 just seems so out of character. I'd be superbly disappointed if BW decided to take that route.

Edit: Gah!? Wall of text! Fixed...

An astute observation, good character analysis, I'm interested in reading what everyone has to say about other characters.

In ME1 my paragon Shepard tried to encourage Garrus to return to C-Sec (and failed), perhaps hoping to spare him what eventually happened to him on Omega. With his SPECTRE status now restored, Shepard would definitely keep him on the team, although not necessarily on the Normandy. Garrus is a solid squad leader (when loyal) and could be tasked on fact finding missions with his own team away from the Normandy, providing useful intelligence and the occasional meeting to keep the emotional bond alive. Time will tell.
