My game crashes after seconds or minutes of play (sometimes not even making it to the "load game") screen. Sometimes this crash is a BSOD; sometimes it's a regular crash to desktop; once it just froze in game (mouse was move-around-able, but the game didn't keep going). It does NOT only happen during cutscenes.

EA's responses has been, to say the least, unhelpful:

What can be done? I have re-installed and patched the game countless times; I have cleaned and re-installed the latest drivers for my video and audio cards; I have dialed down the settings...

What are the contents of your bluescreen? What are your system specs?

to start you could post your system specs and run fraps to figure out your fps count.

I can't read the bluescreen generally--it vanishes too quickly. But I think at least once it said:

Blue screen error caused by a device or driver

You received this message because a hardware device, its driver, or related software has caused a blue screen error. This type of error means the computer has shut down abruptly to protect itself from potential data corruption or loss. In this case, we were unable to detect the specific device or driver that caused the problem.

The following troubleshooting steps might prevent the blue screen error from recurring. Try them in the order given. If one step does not solve the problem, then move on to the next one.

How much VRAM does your Video Card have? I did a quick google on it, and I came up woth 128MB where Mass Effect 2 requires a minimum 256MB.

Have you tried System Requirements Lab to check if it can detect your issue?

well, according to SRL my video card is ok:

Minimum: 256 MB (with Pixel Shader 3.0 support). Supported Chipsets: NVIDIA GeForce 6800 or greater; ATI Radeon X1600 Pro or greater. Please note that NVIDIA GeForce 7300, 8100, 8200, 8300, 8400, and 9300; ATI Radeon HD3200, and HD4350 are below minimum system requirements.

You Have: GeForce 6800 XT

PASS

Features: Minimum attributes of your Video Card

Required You Have

Video RAM 256 MB 256.0 MB

Hardware T&L Yes Yes

Pixel Shader version 3.0 3.0

Vertex Shader version 3.0 3.0

but my CPU is a FAIL:

Minimum: 1.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or equivalent AMD CPU

You Have: AMD Athlon™ 64 Processor 3200+

I thought that my processor was equivalent. maybe not?

Your CPU is not a dual core, and ME2 was designed to run on Dual Core CPU's. (Dual Core AMD's are called X2s. Or atleast, mine is). That might cause the BSOD. The software is asking more then your PC can handle and your PC decides to crash.

My geuss is that you should dial down the settings to the minimum possible, and keep your fingers crossed. Or upgrade your computer, or switch to a console.

Is it possible that my old, old audio card (SB Live! **** from like 1999) is the problem?

Depends. Because the card is terribly old, the drivers probably don't run all that well with XPSP3 and/or vista/Win7 (In other words, they might be terribly outdated) Doesn't your motherboard have a built in sound card as well? Switching over to that one (If you have the drivers for it) might work too.

hmm, yeah I think there's something integrated that I disabled (it shows up as generic "Multimedia Audio Controller" with a yellow ? next to it, no matter what kind of drivers I dig out).

If it keeps being yellow, activiting that will probably not help...

Sigh.

You see, there are two possible problems:

Your CPU is not a dual core, so it will have problems.

Your sound card is hopelessly outdated, and it's archeic drivers will probably cause problems. < My money is on that one.

Your only option is to replace one of them and see if the problem remains or not. Sadly, I can't really help you any further. For your integrated sound card, I would suggest turning to the manefacturers of your motherboard and ask them for help. Or ask a local hobbyist.

in order to get the game to run you should probably get a new geforce as well (aside from the CPU). The requirements ask for geforce 6800 or radeon x1600PRO. In case of radeon, the pro points to a Mainstream/High-end Card, the lack of suffix for the geforce also points towards the mainstream variant. The XT on your card shows that it is a budget version, so in a way, it is lower than the Mainstream 6800.

I'm not 100% sure about that, but even if i'm wrong, your card would barely pass the requirements.

what motherboard do you have? (maybe we can at least solve that problem)

Even if the PC is below system requirements. A bluescreen should not happen. Also waxwingslain, it seems you have to automatic reboot still enabled. Microsoft had the "brilliant" idea to reboot the PC instead of displaying a bluescreen with useful info. Just do a bit of google magic to know how to disable the auto reboot.
