When I played as a paragon I sent Legion through the vent ducts and he survived. When I played as a renegade I sent Mordin and he died as he tried to close the door at the end of the misson. Both Legion and Mordin were loyal. Anyone else experience this?

If you send someone who isn't excellent with technology, they will die at the end of the door sequence.  Mordin is good with biology, not technology.

I'd suggest Tali instead.

Use either Tali or Legion for Tech specalist.

And to save Mordin's ass, send him back with the crew to the ship, Mordin isn't meant to hold a front line.

Loyalty will give a bonus, but for the suicide mission, the character's actual ability to do one of the tasks is also important too.

In the list, every character with a tech based skill is selectable for the vent ducts mission, but Tali and Legion are the best techs.

Like Heartlocker said too, the final part involves who will be left behind to "hold the line" while you and 2 others complete the final objective. Some of your crew can die depending on various factors. The weakest in defensive skill will die first, with a bonus for being loyal.

Before going on the suicide mission, make sure to talk to Mordin until he no longer has anything to say.  Once he has talked with his nephew, he's much better at surviving.  As he states in the conversation, when it's just about "the galaxy" he can't relate to it, but once he associates that he's fighting for his family, he can personalize it & is that much more inspired.
