I am saving up for either a laptop or a desktop that I will use for gaming but I don't know what to get.  I saw an Alienware laptop that IGN recommends that is around $800 but I don't know.  I want something under $800 but also something that'll run Mass Effect 2 in high quality cause I plan to record it aswell.  Also I will be getting Mass Effect 1 and Sims 3 so would that mean I'd have to have a large harddrive?

Sorry for all my questions but I was wondering what computers you guy's play Mass Effect on.  I don't want to scale down the quality at all I want it to be at it's best, so I was wondering what you guy's suggest.

My opinion is that nothing priced below about $1500 is likely to be of much gaming use if it's a laptop, whereas for as little as $700 or so, you can assemble your own desktop PC that will be just fine as a Mainline level (Medium) gaming platform (also available preassembled for about $1000). A laptop to replace a High End, full out gaming desktop is more like $2500, and I just saw a Digital Storm gaming PC advertised for $1600, so about $900 separates the high end, instead of about $400 - $500.

Here is a Gateway PC for $930 that fills the Medium Level requirement:

Before turning your back on that obne, you need to look at the very last update to this article published on the Dragon Age forums:

social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/58/index/519461

That's about the pitfalls of buying a cheap laptiop without enough coolinfg capacity, with the front end being the basics of choosing a desktop video card.

Here are the basics of selecting parts (and identifying components) for a gaming system:

Last of all is the story about the serious difference between a cheap onboard video chip and the real thing, an actual video card:

The laptop I use I bought this past summer at Best Buy. It's an Asus. Intel Core Duo P8700 (it comes with a overclocker installed that bumps this up 15% if you want), 6 GB RAM, nVidia GTX 260M video card (575/950/1440) with 1 GB of dedicated RAM, and a 500 GB HD. The screen is 17". All for 1100 bucks. I can play everything with this laptop on highest settings (minus Crysis, which I only keep the textures on highest quality, and everything else one level below).

EDIT- I'll add I agree that a desktop can be had for much cheaper with better quality components.  I got a laptop only because with my kids its hard to game in a dedicated location.

As Gorath Alpha says, a desktop is definitely the way to go if you have a choice. It'll either be cheaper or more powerful, or both. In my opinion, you really should only consider a gaming laptop if you actually need to be moving the comp around a lot. If it's simply a space issue I suggest clearing some out. :) Mobility's nice, but it brings with it a host of problems: laptops can overheating issues when pressed by games, and you can't really slap in an upgrade for a single component or two like is possible with a desktop, so every upgrade means buying a whole new laptop, which runs into a lot more money if you want to keep following PC tech's upward movement. Even if you're buying whole pre-assembled desktops every upgrade, at least you won't be paying the premium for laptop miniaturization, and you might at least be able to keep your old monitor or something.

Likewise, building your own computer will tend to save you some cash and/or get you a better comp at the same price. Particularly if you can then re-use some of those parts the next time you want to upgrade. That said, self-assembly certainly can be a bit daunting, and it's a questionable trade of time for money if you aren't actually into it - particularly since DIY assembly also means DIY troubleshooting if it comes down to that.

The Toshiba X505-Q860 I got a couple of weeks ago for $1200 runs everything out there and all at max settings. Its the cheapest in their line of gaming laptops.

Oh and it has a Geforce GTS 360M which also supports DirectX 11.

The problem here is that his price was well below what the Price-finding sites are able to report, so it's a fluke, or both Price-grabber and Pricewatch are really falling down on their jobs. <br />

Please do not dig in such old corners of the graveyard! Let the long-dead corpses alone, please!
