I just installed patch 1.01a and I noticed (I'm running the task manager on a second screen) that ever since my CPU is running at a 100% on both cores. Before it would be around 40-50% during gameplay, now it stays at a 100% whether in game, in cut scene or on the desktop - even during character creation. Has anyone else noticed this?

Edit: forgot to mention, this is Windows 7 64bit

welcome to the club you have been initiated into the Fan CLub (as in you need to put a fan up to your pc to keep it from overheating and stuff melting)

lol

I have a amd 64 X2 4400+ on xp 32 bit(4gb mem) cores running at around 2.31 and nvidia 9500 gt 512mb. And my game runs my cores at 100% except when loading zones when it drops down intot he 30-50% range. I am pretty sure it has to do with the PhysX Engine offloading from the gpu to the cpu instead.

I wonder if someone running two nvidia cards and one set to do PhysX only have their cpu's running maxed out. Also Like marz311 I see where folks with quad cores are running all their cores at 60-80% with game.

Only other time I have ever seen a game max my cores out like this is for beta software where code is not always optimized for various cpu's or gpu's and/or running in debug mode.

So far my system hasnt melted but my pc case has an extra side mount fan inside and theres also a large vent grill beside that side mount fans case vent and i got one of those turbo desk fans(you know the ones look sorta like mini jet engines) pointed at it lol.

Also I dont get all the other threads complaining about the game graphics. I got no tearing, and with frame buffer on everything is nice n shiney and gleamy and glossy and looks pretty good to me. Unless those are all console users complaining about graphics and not pc users.

Same problem after installing 1.01a patch - Phenom II X2, both cores running at 100%, even had crash 20 minutes in the game /i was able to run version 1.0 yesterday for about 12 hours without issues/. Please Bioware, fix this!

Are you sure you have enough ram? I am not a computer person but it is to my understanding if you are running many programs in the back like myself this will contribute to your loss of game play, and over usage of your CPU. I have many things disabled on my start up not to mention many things more I manually disable once my desktop has loaded to make sure things that constantly take up ram are disabled. Non essential things that is.

I don't run anything other than DA: Origins. Everything is either disabled on start up, or afterwords. Since MSN and AVG are performance ****s on my machine I have them disabled when I play any games.

I have experienced no difference though with CPU usage before or after the patch installation. I can still access things in the background without any delay to response.

I noticed a loss of around 5fps and longer load times and more cpu usage when i installed the patch. I fixed it by replacing the daoriginsgdf.dll file in bin_ship with the old one from the app_ship.rar file in Dragon Age\\data\\ on the dvd. I don't know if it will help you, but as long as you back up the new one, it's worth a shot.

The 100% cpu usage (even in the menu, before starting a game) is a very common occurence, as it seems, on AMD and Intel, low and high end systems, ATI and nVidia:

http://daforums.biow...02372&forum=146

Someone from Bioware posted in the linked thread that they're informed of the problem and working on it. But at the moment, no one really knows when a fix will be ready for it... we're all still waiting for anything news.

I think I had this even before 1.01, though.

I have the same issue with E6600 CPU, 4GB Ram and Nvidia 8800GT. RAM is at only 50 percent or less utilization.

CPU spikes to 100 Percent, and stays there throughout the game, starting immediately at 66 Percent durning Menus, and 100 Percent thereafter.

Setting Proc Affinity to only 1 CPU of the Dual Core, simply maxes that core at 100 Percent permanently. Game play is working, but CPU shouldn't be pegged.

I have the same issue but that only happens after an extended period of play. Maybe 30-60 minutes in. I hear the fans really load but they change speed every few seconds. I have a Phenom II 920, 6 GB ram, 4850 X2 2 GB, Windows 7 64bit.

No crashes so far, but it's a bit worrying temperature-wise. At least there are no slowdowns, so the game plays fine. I'm just waiting for the meltdown though...

It shouldn't be that much of a problem if you have decent cooling.

DA is a demanding game though and you try turning down some options.

DA is not a demanding game, not as such, there's just a memory leak somewhere wich will cause it to hog all the resources, no mo matter how much is actually available.

Too bad the resources now consumed are not used to run the game however, so the game stutters, a LOT.

nobody knows why it happens, or why some people are not affected, quad core, dual core, windows xp/vista/7, doesn't matter, it happens, or not for some happy folks.

me, i played on max settings all through thursday just fine, then on friday morning game became unplayable, even on lowest settings, altough after i cleaned my graphics card heatsink/fan and my cpu heatsink/fan it helped, and now i can play on lowest setting, for a few minutes before it becomes unplayable.

try playing on windowed mode and setting the cpu affinity to use only one core, it helps a bit, you might also try force removing sounds wich seem to help some people (not me though)

Tried that, didn't change it unfortunately.

Btw. I'm running a dual monitor setup. Is that something that we all have in common?

tried disabling the 2nd monitor, both cores are still at 100%.

also, lowering all settings to the absolute minimum, and everything possible turned off makes no difference, still 100% cpu usage.

AMD64 3800+ ,Geforce 7800Gt, 512x2 dual channel 2-3-3-7, 1280x1024, medium setting
I played 3 hours without problem and my pc doesn't make noise. (if I have 100% cpu usage, I don't know but I can play :)

edit: patch installed

this is actually a problem on for people with multicore systems... my OC'd P4 3.2Ghz Hyperthreaded running at 4.9 GHz barely breaks a sweat and my core temps are fine too... I'd suggest people with heat problems make sure the airflow is good to the machine and remove a side panel for more local-air cooling

if you feel like gambling, you could try using RivaTuner overclocking tool.

instal the RivaTuner and on the first page click the small button on the rightside, at the driver settings, Pick system settings (the one looking like a graphics card), and from there, lower your core, shader and memory clock by around 10 to 15%, some of us have found that it helps, it doesn't actually fix it, but the problem is lessened.

this is, ofcourse, completely at your own risk, it may work, it may melt your computer into a small puddle, i can't really say for sure

The engine is probably still unoptimized because so much activity shouldn't be happening in the background it may still have some debug script running.

i am leaning towardsss the somethings unoptimized in code.

Some people keep bringing up ram and mem usage which isnt the problem here. its the CPU cores themselves running maxed out, nothing to do with the mem usage. I am also wondering though with the dual, triple, and quad cores if it might be something to do with bios settings.

I forget what its called but my BIOS by default changes cpu speed/clocking. That is, if theres no demand on cpu it runs lower voltage and clocking speeds but boosts things when theres heavy demand. Its a default feature int he bios and theres nothing to do in windows itself. Though you can get software from your motherboard manufacturer to adjust all your clocking from within windows without rebooting on the fly. I never used the software though.

Just wondering if the game somehow isnt allowing for the automatic adjustment of the CPU, Maybe I need to install the tweaking/monitoring software and watch it while game loads and runs and see whats going on.

hmm.. someone mentioned Physx being the culprit. I know physx drivers can have problems if you play more than one physx games on your system. You could try uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers and see if it helps. On the other hand if people with Ati cards have the same problems I doubt it's a Physx problem.

Well, I believe as of right now, there's not way to run the Physx on the GPU if you have Nvidia, so I doubt graphics drivers or anything like that are the issue.

Core 2 Duo E8500 @3.16 maxed out at 100% on 2 cores.

Don't notice any performance impact though. Computer seem perfectly fine while im alt-tabbed.
