I'd venture to say if his mom still makes the decisions for him he is too young to play a M rated game.....

this, If said friend IS " old enough" and their mother still has that much control over them, it's high time somone grows some quads and cuts the cord already.

that said, Fanatic nut jobs of any line of philosophy/faith/social stance/etc can find any flaws and faults in anything when they " want" to find it.

I'm not Christian, however I do know that Christians largely do not believe in the young-Earth idea.

If this game is offensive to your friend's mom, maybe someone should inform her that she should also be offended at the quantum physics that makes all of our TVs, computers, microwaves, satellite communications, LED's, neon signs, and.. well... everything work. After all, those very same laws of quantum physics are what make the radiometric dating techniques work. You know, the ones we use to measure the age of the Earth.

That's not Christian, that's young earth creationist.
Anyone who takes the Old Testament seriously needs to be beaten around the head with it.

Maybe that IS the way they make people take it seriously.

Don't be an ass. You can take it seriously without going by the word-by-word understanding of it. Besides that "6000 year old" thing came from some official in Europe sometime around the 14th century I think, it is not in the Old Testament.

The Old Testament is nothing but hate filled propaganda.
To take it seriously is to take it's messages of hate, warmongering, racism and sexism seriously.
It is a collection of seriously messed up stories written by men with an agenda.

not mass effect related and totally an argument that neither one of you will win.

What I don't understand is how people can honestly take word for word, everything in the bible etc, you'd have to have a very narrow mind to not consider other possiblilities.

No offence to your friend ....but his mom let's him play all these games but not Mass effect because of her belief in the age of earth........she has teh downs or something?

My friend doesn't even agree.  He just goes to church and reads the bible because it makes his mother happy.  I've never asked him personally but I think he's an agnostic like I am.

You have to understand, I am from the deep south and down here saying you're anything other than a Christian can get you killed.

Yeah, which Christians?

I'm Catholic, and the Vatican has long accepted that Genesis is a parable and that multi-billion year evolution (guided by the hand of God, of course) is a scientific probability.

Most of the more mainstream Protestant faiths also do not accept, or at least do not get involved in, many aspects of biblical literalism.

I would guess that the huge majority of Christian faiths would find Mass Effect's story to be perfectly acceptable. At the very least, they wouldn't offer any judgements on it. Tell your friend that his Mom's a weirdo.

I had a girl in my psych class argue that it would be worth never creating any more Mature-rated games because there's the chance that a kid could get their hands on it. That's right: Get rid of every game with questionable content because one kid could play it.

The above quote was basically my response. After laughing my arse off of course.

Wait - Dragon Age, Gears of War and Unreal are A-okay but not Mass Effect?

I'm totally gonna sue you for killing me with laughter.

I have a friend who is a Christian and he says that his mom wno't let him play the Mass Effect games because they're anti-Christian.
When I asked him to elaborate he said that it's because the game states that the Protheans existed 50 thousand years ago but according to the Christian faith, the day of Genesis began about 6000 years ago.

This is of course false as you can just point out that if the universe really were 6000 years old we wouldn't be able to see objects in the sky that are millions of light years away since light takes time to travel but that is not the point nor is the point of this post to bash Christians.

My question for Christians is do you feel that this game makes claims which contradict your faith and you find offensive?  If not, how do you reconcile the claims this game makes against your faith?  Do you just say "ehh, it's just a game, who cares?"

This is covered in the in-game Codex.  It discusses the religious panic and upheaval at the discovery of the Porthean ruins on Mars and how it contridicts most of the major religions.

Your friend's mom won't buy the game for him, he needs to save up his money and get his ass down to Best Buy and pick it up on the down low.  Religion be damned!

There's no argument to win. Hell, every level-headed Christian I know dismisses the Old Testament as a dated piece of fiction. Belief in even the Christian God has nothing to do with it.

I am going to refrain from saying what I want to say, but typically the men constantly attacking the Bible and promoting atheism or cults of personality are those with agendas.

And BTW before you go on about the Bible being a massive capistalist conspiracy by white racists, I should let you know the USSR isn't around anymore.

I also wonder what your friend's mom is worried about. Is she afraid that being exposed to any contradictory idea, even in the form of a video game, will shake his faith? If not, she has nothing to worry about. If so, then he isn't going to be a Creationist for much longer anyway, game or not.

Yes, because actual Christians never dismiss the old testament.. oh wait, yes they do.

It's okay, just remember to microwave your tin foil hat before wearing it. That way the evil thought waves from our atheist satellites in geo-syncronous orbit above your house won't get to you.

Killing people because they don't agree with your belief.....that isn't very Christian.  But then I'm not from the deep south.

Young earth idea? I didn't know it had a name, although I know it exists due to a few very religious people I know, and, of course, The Onion.

Some people take the latter part of this as the evidence of the former. Just saying.
