Yeah, which Christians?

I'm Catholic, and the Vatican has long accepted that Genesis is a parable and that multi-billion year evolution (guided by the hand of God, of course) is a scientific probability.

This is more or less what I believe. Yes, I'm a Christian, and yes I believe in the Big Bang theory, and in evolution, and I have no problem what so ever with the plot in Mass Effect

I also wonder what your friend's mom is worried about. Is she afraid that being exposed to any contradictory idea, even in the form of a video game, will shake his faith? If not, she has nothing to worry about. If so, then he isn't going to be a Creationist for much longer anyway, game or not.

It's just the way the culture is down here.  People are very culturally conservative.  I remember during my softmore year there was this huge **** storm where parents were petitioning the board of education to remove evolution from biology courses unless they teach it alongside creationism.

Fortunately they failed.

It's a hostile environment for people who have different ideas and the way you survive social ostracization is by keeping your mouth shut.

Around the year 5 B.C., followers of God discovered the prophet of a Jewish civilization. In the decades that followed, this mysterious prophet revealed startling new miracles, enabling him as the Son of God. The basis for this incredible revelation spurred the formation of the largest group of Sunday Mass churchgoers of all time.

They called this massive religious denomination "Christianity".

The civilizations of the world call it...

I really hate getting into religious discussions, but you people believe in a book that has talking animals, wizards, witches, demons, sticks turning into snakes, food falling from the sky, people walking on water, and all sorts of magical, absurd and primitive stories

Don't get me wrong, he makes some good arguments, and I understand his perspective.  I just think that he can be a little too condescending and insulting to people's beliefs, and that his attitude ultimately hurts his cause.  People are much more inclined to listen to what you have to say when they don't feel like they're being made fun of, even when you're telling them that everything they know is wrong.

wow now thats funny. I think its offensive to other christians for believing the earth is only 6000 years old. The old testament is hardly an unfallible unchanged book of the Abrahamic faiths.

I have a friend who is a Christian and he says that his mom wno't let him play the Mass Effect games because they're anti-Christian.
When I asked him to elaborate he said that it's because the game states that the Protheans existed 50 thousand years ago but according to the Christian faith, the day of Genesis began about 6000 years ago.

This is of course false as you can just point out that if the universe really were 6000 years old we wouldn't be able to see objects in the sky that are millions of light years away since light takes time to travel but that is not the point nor is the point of this post to bash Christians.

My question for Christians is do you feel that this game makes claims which contradict your faith and you find offensive?  If not, how do you reconcile the claims this game makes against your faith?  Do you just say "ehh, it's just a game, who cares?"

This can only happen in America.

*sarcasm* Yes, because religious fanaticism is completely unique to America.*sarcasm*

I'm a christian and I believe God sent Bioware down to earth to make this game so no, it does not offend me.

How can you believe that, when EA owns BioWare and it's quite clear that EA is the devil?

Now I'm not a Creator/believer type, However, the Maker doesn't need material objects to do "their" bidding. Image IPB

The *cough* Devil *cough*, needs anything and everything, to feel better about it's total lack of endowment. Image IPB

Besides Bioware started out without E/A' help, then as Biowares' ambitions outgrew their funds available, they turned to the *cough* Devil *cough*, for assistance.Image IPB

But I'll put money down, (any amount any of you can muster) that Bioware have VERY good lawyers, and are able to keep E/A away from development issues. Image IPB

So your suggesting introducing this mother to an egotistical ass will convert her to atheism? How is going to extreme opposite end of the arugment an improvement when 99% of Christians probably don't have a problem with ME anyway? This idea some have that evolution=atheism is just as stupid as the 6000 year old earth idea.

I don't see any anti-Christian stuff in this game. There is a lack of churches and priests I suppose but that isn't really an attack on anything, and your pretty much always on alien worlds anyway. A number of characters actually talk about their faiths anyway including Ashley Williams and Thane.

Richard Dawkins isn't really trying to win people over.  His work is red meat for atheist.

I don't think it's possible for an atheist to really win over a Christian.  If somebody is willing to believe things that can be proven false such as the earth being in the center of the universe or the universe being 6000 years old then there is nothing that can convince them to change their mindset.

It's not worth it.  Just live and let live.

No offence to your friend ....but his mom let's him play all these games but not Mass effect because of her belief in the age of earth........she has teh downs or something?

My friend doesn't even agree.  He just goes to church and reads the bible because it makes his mother happy.  I've never asked him personally but I think he's an agnostic like I am.

You have to understand, I am from the deep south and down here saying you're anything other than a Christian can get you killed.

Killing people because they don't agree with your belief.....that isn't very Christian.  But then I'm not from the deep south.

History begs to differ. Religious people through out history and across culture tend to kill people, and Christians were no different. At the end, it's education and law that keep people at bay.

It is not uncommon for the more strict faiths to say and think things like this. I believe that it is unreasonable but we all share and show our faith in different ways.

Some people will not drink caffinated beverages because it is against their faith.

Some people will go through great lengths to relocate worms because they gain something from that in their faith.

Some people are now looking for The Angry One to brain it for what it says about others faiths.

Are any of these things wrong, no. Will any of them continue, most certainly yes.

DAO is more realistic than The Bible. At least there's no stuff like sticks turning into snakes or food falling from the sky and there aren't any people walking on water

Yes but it goes against the fundamentals of Christianity.  Just because it happened didn't make it a Christian thing to do.

I would point out that atheism and anti-theism are not always the same thing.

Dawkins is a "hard" atheist - he actively disbelieves in even the possibility of God. This is quite a bit different from most atheists, who don't believe in God, but are not religiously commited to the idea. Pun intended.

And that just shows that you are unwilling to even learn about Christian beliefs if you think that we all believe the earth to be in the center in the universe. And again the Bible doesn't even say that anyway.

And this mindset that you are either an atheist or a Christian is idiotic. One can be a theist or deist without being "religious."
