I've seen several posts regarding Insanity, and I've browsed most of them, and while I have no doubt similar questions have been asked, I wanted to directly ask for input.

Why? Because I've checked out several guides, and every guide I've seen was written by someone who favored what particular class they used. Someone may have used a Soldier and only a Soldier for Insanity and found that to be possible, but maybe they tried a Vanguard first and found that impossible, therefore their guide paints Soldiers in a positive light and Vanguards in a negative one. Every guide I've looked at has been like that with one class or another.

I have beaten Mass Effect 2 six times now with each class, so I have every class available for a New Game+ and I have every Advanced Training power unlocked--basically I have every option open to me for starting my Insanity playthrough.

I want to hear from people who have done Insanity with more than just a single class. The achievement may be part of it, and I am doing this  to challenge myself, but the experience and the gameplay is important to me, so I don't necessarily want to take the one class that makes it a cakewalk.

I'd like to do this with any class but the Engineer, as I found them to be the least fun. I'm looking at using either the Soldier, Infiltrator, or Vanguard, though I've heard that latter is very difficuly--at the same time hearing from others it's not hard at all. What are the pros and cons of picking one over the other, what powers and strategies should I focus on, who would be the best teammates... basically, how did you play Insanity, and what tactics did you use?

I'm perfectly capable of diving in and figuring it all out myself as I've done with every other game's max difficulty setting before this one, but since I have a couple hours to wait before I get home to play, I thought I'd ask these questions and consider the responses in the mean time.

Thanks.

I think you may get more action in the Character Builds forum .... I would expect that if you've played plenty of Hardcore you have the basic ideas with the exception that Insanity is just the next step above HC.

well when i did it on soldier it involved a lot of adrenaline burst -> pop up -> sniper headshot. in some missions with the loki mechs they don't keep their distance and move up on your cover so take them out first.

my adept i'm doing now i just spam warp and reave all day with some smg fire in between (and AR after the collector ship) but i hear its easier to start a new import than to do a NG+ because then you're fighting low level enemies with no upgrades and not lvl 30 enemies with no upgrades.

I think I've posted this several times...  but I'm just trying to help people out.  Go here first:

Controlling the Battlefield

Then realize that on Insanity, the enemies all have defenses (shields, barrier, or armor), they have better aim, are more aggressive, and hit harder.  Defense powers (Geth Shield Boost/Barrier/Fortification) are not as good on Insanity as they last about one second under fire and have a very long cooldown.

You'll have to play smarter than before if you want to progress smoothly without dying and/or running out of ammo.  Proper use of weapons and weapon ammo powers are a plus and you will want to use your heavy weapon a little more than you did before.  Things that were no problem before (Husks) will present a bigger problem this time around.  Things that were a problem before will take a little preperation or consideration.

Enjoy.

Turn off power usage for your squadmates, that way you have to tell them to use them. Always use cover and put your squadies in cover. Don't run around like a moron spraying your gun either.

It's not really Insanity unless you import from a ME2 save.

Although I'd rename the difficulty "Stupidity" in that scenario.

BigKahuna25 mentioned that a New Game+ may be more difficult because of the enemy level scaling versus your non-upgraded weapons. Did anyone else find this to be a problem? I never considered that aspect, but it definitely makes sense now that I think about it.

I've spent more gaming hours on Dragon Age than Mass Effect 2 (so far), so I'm the kind of player how likes to pause combat and make tactical decisions, which I'm understanding is the way to go. Thanks for the input so far, everybody, and thanks for that guide, thisisme8. Really helpful.

Well the reason why people are bias when writing their guides mainly relates to their overall experience. For example, TheAverageGatsby only talks about the Adept and attempts to separate the class from its otherwise horrid reputation. He notes its strength and he does express some favoritism to the class. My Engineer guide does the same thing, Thisisme8's Vanguard guide does it too.

In order to get a more balanced view of all the classes in a guide, someone who have to combine them for one complete guide. Which would a lot of work and a long read.

Okay, on to the question at hand. My own experience with Infiltrator and Soldier on Insanity is somewhat limited. I just started an Infiltrator (the class I chose for my next guide) so I can't really provide much feedback. If you search for Thisisme8's guides, he has one for both Vanguard and Infiltrator classes.

Soldier really doesn't need much of a guide since its powers are more basic and less tactical than the other classes, in my opinion

The Infiltrator is the union of the Soldier and the Engineer. What did you dislike about the Engineer? That can determine if you would like the infiltrator.

on insanity whatever class you play you invariably end up spamming one abilitie, chucking in a 2nd only rarely. vanguard is charge and soldier its HAR, infiltrator spams, but not as much because, well, once you've got the widow you dont need the extra dmg and cloak is more of a GTFO and repostioning tool.

personally, as you may gather from my sig, i like the vanguard. its charge spam sure, but because you've gotta think about your charges, or just go screw it and charge those 5 guys anyway, either way if you pull it off its awesome, as i'm sure you know from playing it already. feeling of tactics paying off or a bit of luck+twitch skills winning out is great. charge never, and still hasnt, gotten old for me whereas headshot spam and HAR spam did. personal opinion ofc, but thats what you asked for ;)

Stay behind cover, know where your enemies and allies are. Babysit your allies in positioning and power usage to ensure they don't drop and to allow you all to focus fire on individual enemies (therefore taking them out faster). Also always use your squad's powers immediately when they are available so that you can keep up a steady barrage of offensive skills. And go for melee mobs first (husks, krogan, varren) then standard foot soilders followed by the heavies, snipers, harbringer in the end.

As for class if you prefer tactical combat with lots of options then go with Sentinel. Mix of biotic and tech skills with Tech armour making you pretty formidable. For the bonus power I suggest Warp ammo.

Here is a good tactic to fall back on if playing offensively fails.

Enemies are reluctant to advance on you (usually). Take advantage of the way they are programmed and set up your squadmates as mortars:

1) Tell your squadmates to stay far FAR back from the fight, out of line of sight of enemies.

2) Place yourself up in front so that you can see enemies.

3) "Mortar" enemies to death by using your squad powers. Tis a slow process but almost guarantees victory.

Remember that with the proper upgrades medi-gels heal your shields and health. Unfortunately, I totally forgot about this during my insanity run. It probably would've saved me on numerous occasions, particularly against dual scions.

I felt like the Engineer was too focused on using powers and defensive tactics and lacked in direct combat ability, whereas the Infiltrator had a better offensive arsenal and more direct combat abilities, based on my playthroughs; I know I would like the Infiltrator, because I do like the Infiltrator, and I can see where you're coming from with the "half Soldier half Engineer" thing, but ME2 blurs that line more than ME1--classes feel more like unique combatants rather than a pure or a hybrid.

I've checked out the info given to me and browsed through the links--thanks a lot! I've decided to use the Infiltrator, as that was one of my favorite classes in ME2: I love sniping, playing as a rogue, and having a diverse arsenal of powers and abilities.

For the most part, the purpose of this thread has been fulfilled for me now, but I would still welcome any other tips anyone might have--what to level up first, which squaddies to bring, the best armor?--but I can probably find that info elsewhere now that I'm set on my class, so feel free to let this thread die.

Big thanks for all the input! You guys are great.

soldier was fun, still working through with my infi, but i'm a vanguard player at heart and i just downed horizon with my level 15 vg last night.

some cases you want to hang back and try smart tactics while in others, acting crazy and rushing blindly is the better option. it took me five tries to get pass the scions on horizon. ont he first four i tried to keep my range, play it smart, pick off the husks, etc... it makes sense, it's controllable, and it works - eventually. still i got poed and on the fifth time i spammed charged and used the evi w/incendiary rounds to try and down the scions asap - the near impossible fight was over in a minute.

then there's korlus and grunt's recruitment mission. the one part i dread the most is the battleground right before you reach okeare's lab. i get through the initial 4 bs troopers okay but the bs defenses throughout the rest of the end fight? tough as hell.

so i found a good spot to hide and observe the overall battlefield and saw that it was a good dfense, what bioware had set up, except for this one enemy who stood under the overhead bridge and didn't do much of anything.

[b]except stand there[b/]

so i wondered, why would bioware pui a guy like that there? you have this great defense and he could make it airtight if he was placed in a better position. i could kill him sure, sniped him with my infi and soldier on previous playthroughs but now being a lowbie vg this defense setup was becoming a real problem.

so i said f*ck it, charged him - shot him in the face - then ran under the bridge for cover and found some behind its main support pillar. the enemies i expected to find on the other side hadn't spawned yet and the door to okeare's lab was unlocked and glowing green. i finished off the guy i initially charged then ran for the lab, ran into another trooper - killed him, before finally reaching the lab

i had just overrun the entire enemy blue sun position. a couple of centurions (and miranda somehow also) were runnning behind me so after linking up with her the two of us killed the shotgun wielding baddies before sneaking up behind the remaining initial bs defenders and picking them off like a turkey shoot.

one of the most hardest me2 fights in the game is now, suddenly, a breeze

Even on insanity, I used the armor that I thought looked best -- the difference isn't that huge.

Use the best squadmate for the mission you're on, since you know what you'll be facing after so many playthroughs. With an infiltrator, I usually took Miranda because she's just great (for practically class), and the second teammate depended on the foes (Grunt against Blood Pack, Garrus against Blue Suns, etc).

I'm thinking I'll be bringing Grunt most of the time, because he's such a tough cookie, and probably Miranda, too, for her Cerberus Tactician health talent.

Bring Grunt and Zaeed.and have Zaeed use a sniper rifle while Grunt uses his shotgun. Works every time ;)

I found Thane very useful on insanity, very effective against armour with warp for biotic field and throw to get rid of husks without armour in one hit. I was a Sentinel though

Infiltrator is a good choice personally, I believe armor is the most common defence type. You can easily have Garrus to be your anti-shield expert (for areas that have shields).
