I love Rogues. Oh the stealth attacks!!! I like to have my rogue, Dristen the Dalish, teamed with Zevran whom he learned the Assassin spec from. We go crawling through whatever tunnels or ruins in stealth while the others hang back, then we sneek behind the most threatening target and wait while I position the other two... usually Alistair and Morrigan, just out of range. Then you take out that threat right as you remove hold so they come rushing in for the frontal assault without being bombarded with magic or shattershot or whatever the threat was that we just beheaded. This usually ends with Zevran shouting about how awesome we are. Good times.

Rogues are very fast, and right off the bat, early in the game, they have the advantage of not getting knocked down easily. I had the hardest time at first getting Alistair to stay on his feet. And if he's not standing he cant use health poltices. Which he is slow to use anyhow. He's becoming much more useful later in the game now that enemy archers are becoming an actual threat with scatershot and such.

Rogues, basically, are very flexible in battle. When things get chaotic, you want someone who can move quickly and deal massive backstabs and such. Otherwise your warriors become overwhelmed. Sometimes it's best to just put them in stealth and let your warrior bait some of the enemies before attacking from behind. While those enemies are rushing your warrior, your rogues can also hit any archers or mages that are hanging back with grenades. Then backstab the ones attacking the warrior, then attack the archers with longbows while your mage uses magics that weaken, stun, or freeze them, or buck individuals off... essentially controlling the playing field.

Yet another "educated" opinion on the class.

Stealth really is gravy.  The main advantage of rogues in my view is high DPS  + high critical chance rate + high armor penetration (through cunning) + high defense for durability.  In short, they blow warriors out of the water.

Now, granted, I too find Sten's 2H sweep and Alistair's shield bash to be sexy and they can do a lot of damage in one hit- IF they don't miss, and IF my rogue hasn't already killed the mark because they're so slow.  It just isn't all that, not when it comes to mowing through the mobs that the game presents to you.

Here's another illustration:  The duel with *spoiler removed*.  *A certain NPC* is a warrior class.  Anyone who tells me that they would rather put a warrior up against him rather than a rogue or mage... I will LOL in your general direction.

To be fair, I nearly always put my PC up in said dual, and my dual-wield warriors mop the floor with said *certain NPC*, so it ain't just the rogues or mages who can rip through that dual pretty easily :)

How to make your rogue rock:

Invest heavily in cunning.

Get the bard and get the song that increases everything you need, by a factor based on cunning.

Use daggers.

Now he will deal more damage than any fighter.

...

Otherwise, you NEED stealth.

...

If you DON'T invest heavily in cunning and don't pick the hide talents, your rogue won't do anything all that well, at all, except opening chests with generic loot (locked chests ALWAYS contain generic loot -- or there will be a key)...

The rogue is kind of a one-dimensional character: He's an assassin, he just doesn't know that yet, and the longer you refuse to play him as a cunning assassin -- the worse he will get.

Agreed!  Even unlocking doors/chest is DULL given the fact that you simply right click.  At least with having mini games for lock picking it was more interesting.  Considering anyone can dual wield and pick up poisioning it does make the thief pointless. Backstab isn't that great.  Stealth, traps - blah poorly implemented.  If you want to play a thief not just use it as a stepping stone to ranger (assassian isn't that great and is more of a warrior class)

I've played DW warriors, too, and the rogue still gets the easy button on that scene.  You do not have the armor penetration, critical chance or lethality in your swings that a rogue has.

??  I don't understand your point.  You're saying that the melee abilities of the rogue such as the assassin talents are something that a warrior should have, but somehow a warrior is still better?  So I guess what you're saying is, since rogue talents are boring and not that useful, you shouldn't bother, just take a class that is even less interesting and useful?

Dual wield combined with high cunning and dexterity + rogue abilities= win.  A DW warrior is a gimped melee rogue, so why bother?

Here's a big hint: If you don't like playing a class, don't play that class. If someone is forcing you to play a class you don't want to play, then counseling might be in order.

Rogues can be a lot of fun. Stealth + multiple poisons + dual wielding + backstab + assassin = dead bosses.

The reason why people think Rogues suck is because a rogue is the most micro managed class. Warriors all you have to do is decide on a tree. Mages a little trickier but same concept. Decide on 2 or 3 trees and don't fan out too far. Rogues, however, have a wide variety of useful talents. Problem is that the best rogues are not set in just 1 or 2 trees. You have so many trees to go to that it means taking the time to think hmmm how often will I use this. My first rogue sucked because I didn't micromanage. I'm considering making a 2nd one and this time actually taking the time to consider the best outcome. Remember, a rogue is deadly in any distance. With their dex their less likely to get hit in close combat and are beasts with bows. Plus rogues are more expensive. They really do need the books because there isn't enough points in just leveling to make an uber powered rogue, unlike a mage or warrior. Hopefully, the rogue will be easier with Awakening due to the increase of level cap.

The first play-through I completed was with a rogue, and I didn't even use all the goodies like bombs and poisons and stealth (until late in the game). I like all three classes for different reasons and will chose a particular save to play based on my mood at the moment. Sometimes, in the immortal words of my sister (who's also a gamer), "I want to go in the dungeon and kill something." Other times, I feel like thinking a bit more and will play a mage. Then again, when I feel all sneaky and kind of wicked, I play my rogue.

I have found rouge useful as a lip color, however. Pat on, coat with gloss, and away you go.

All you need is a sword with armor penetration bonus. Keening Blade & Oathkeeper just to name a few. Besides DW warriors don't need positioning to take down masses of enemies. The rogues do & that's the biggest disadvantage that DW rogues have.

I have two amazon's and both are DW warriors. My favorite combination: My warrior-maiden, Alistair, Zevran, Morrigan. Alistair tanks, my amazon slices and dices, and while the enemy is focused on the two of them, Zevran and Morrigan simply pick them off. Easy pickins'.

I've played mage-less, and I've played tank-less. But I will never play rogue-less. They are the most lethal members of my PCs group.

A big "Hell NO" from me.

And a big kick from Rogues for misspelling their class name, too.

Having played two characters so far, I was surprised to note that I repeatedly got my arse handed to me as an Arcane Warrior, but completely tore up the battlefield with a rogue (with the vast majority of damage dealt by me, even though I had Alistair on every mission in the game). They are crazy dual-wielding speed machines, and it's super convenient to be able to unlock chests and theft-related side quests with your own talents.

Even playing as a close-range mage, I found it handy to have a rogue around not just to take care of traps and chests, but to lay down stunning fire with a bow...

Tried a playthrough as all three types of characters.

Found playing as a mage or rogue by far the most interesting. Being a warrior - the most boring.

The warriors were by far the easiest to constantly leave on AI, was almost never issuing them direct commands. Easiest to "automate"....

My rogue is turning into a better tank than the two warriors in his group... of course, I built him as a duelist, and deliberately made him really hard to hit.
