DotA as a phenomenon was spawned on Battle.net. I know two games that aren't Warcraft, but that are essentially DotA.
I liked spending my time with the various TD maps, though I preferred the ones I could play solo. I never cared much for relying on people I don't know.

Solo Tower Defense? But I liked blaming everyone else when it failed.

:innocent:

As for the topic itself... there's also the possibility of an online top-down RPG like Diablo (Mass Effect: Elcor of Destruction?) or... a multiplayer platformer game like New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Super Mass Effect Bros.)?

In the case of the latter, this picture is applicable:

If they ever make Mass Effect RTS they should have space and land battles and every faction will have pluses and minuses.

System Alliance: great navy and fighters, decent infantry, week armor and defense towers.

Citadel Fleet: great navy and defense turrets, infantry mix- Asari average in health and damage but best biotics, Turians best damage and damage resistance( dunno what minus to have), Slarians weak health and damage but tech experts and can have camo-, week fighters and armor

Terminus system: decent navy and infantry in high numbers and with Varens, everything else week

Geth Heretics: great navy, defense turrets and armor, decent fighters, week infantry( it relies on shields) and husk need dead organics to be created and you don't have full control over them since their are mindless

Skyllian Verge: mix of decent infantry of multiple races( Krogans are only great and Vorcha weak but in big numbers and fast regeneration) but expensive, decent fighters, week navy, armor and defense turrets

Rannoch Armada: same with Geth Heretics only bigger selection of units, Quarians almost useless as infantry do to week immunity

Rachni Cluster: no idea

Well if it's that way at least we know we won't be having any multiplayer for ME3. I don't know about an RTS though, if they make it I hope it doesn't go to consoles though even if I have a 360. I don't want a halo wars or any of that simplified crap for an RTS. I hope the story isn't similar to Starcraft though. That's already too similar, Xel'Naga and the Reapers are kind of similar except that nobody knows if the Xel'Naga are coming to kill everyone. That's about it with the similarities though. The Protoss have nothing in common with ME well maybe just that the look a bit like Turians and there's nothing like the Zerg in ME. Humans are also not divided into several factions that fight each other for retarded reasons.

Simplified RTS

ME 3 not going multiplayer

What did Brutal Legend have as a multiplayer suite? Simplified RTS

Came up during the Big Battles, which some would want some big battle missions minigames for ME 3. Almost like.. a simplified RTS

EA published both games

Well I hope that doesn't happen though. I just hope ME3 doesn't get any kind of multiplayer or coop. I think it would be a stupid move but with EA's greediness all kinds of crap can happen.

That depends on who's working on it. The job is for BioWare Montreal - which was originally EA Montreal. EA Montreal used to make mediocre expansion packs for games.

...So I hope they're not making a terrible expansion pack. Even if there is multiplayer, it appears that it will be outsourced to BioWare Montreal so that it won't affect the development of the single-player campaign (so it'll be the same regardless of whether there was multiplayer or not).

However, because some game critics value the multi-player aspect more highly than single-player, BioWare would lose points with those people and essentially get a lower review score if they don't pull off a multiplayer mode perfectly. They also don't know how successful their developing MMO will be yet. That's what they should worry about most.

The best we can hope for is that they're planning a separate multiplayer game for Mass Effect - one that won't intrude upon the development of Mass Effect 3. I'm still going with RTS, though.

I fully expect a "Mass Effect Wars"  to be announced either this or next year, developed by Ensemble Studios Robot Entertainment.

Seriously it's too soon, even for EA.

UPDATE (6/28):

I know this is one of narfgarg's old modding videos, but it shows that there is code for some kind of splitscreen in Mass Effect 2. It's likely that it's hard-coded into the Unreal Engine, but in case some gaming journalist wants to speculate and write an article about it as if it were fact (*cough* Liara DLC, ME3 at E3 *cough*), I'll just post this picture up here:

Well, it looks like you were right.

I'm surprised no one commented on the co-op video, though...

UPDATE 7/12: More info on Starcraft 2's single player campaign released - which looks like an RTS with RPG elements.

http://us.starcraft2...ay/hyperion.xml
http://www.insidemac...ry.php?ID=19048

Imagine if this were carried over to Mass Effect?

The Illusive Man runs the show in Cerberus, and he's constantly working on new technology that becomes available as you progress through the human campaign. After earning enough credits by completing missions, you’ll be able to purchase a wide array of upgrades that can enhance your base, infantry, vehicles, and much more. These each have two available upgrade options, and you can purchase both if you save up enough credits.

With enough credits, you'll be able to bolster your forces by purchasing mercenary contracts and recruiting squadmates. You can access the mercenary and squadmate screen by speaking with Miranda Lawson or Jacob Taylor in the Cantina between missions. Once a mercenary is under contract, these battle-hardened units can be used at the cost of in-game resources via the Merc Compound during missions. Depending on how many different contracts you purchase, you'll be able to mix and match your available mercenaries however you see fit during battle. Each mercenary has a cooldown before more can be called into action.

Shortly into your campaign, you'll become acquainted with EDI, the AI on board the Normandy. With her help, along with some legwork on your end, you'll gain access to a number of significant improvements to your weapon systems and tactical abilities. To use these upgrades, you must acquire rachni and geth research points by completing bonus objectives during individual campaign missions. Once you've saved up enough of these points, you can put them to use by clicking on the research console in the Laboratory and browsing the available building, unit, and tactical upgrades. Throughout the campaign, EDI will inform you of things that she needs in order to create these enhancements.

Mass EFfect 3 isn't going to be multiplayer. Sorry, but it's not. Not only would it ruin the franchise, but Bioware develops RPG's, not Gears of War typed games. The posting for a "multiplayer programmer" for Mass Effect franchise is probably for a Mass Effect MMO if anything.

Not so sure about multiplayer, but I've been told GoW game mechanics are pretty similar to ME2.

Any way, an RTS sounds fine.  They've got the universe, lots of conflicts between races.  Sounds do-able.  Who wouldn't buy it?  The only problem is the competition from SC2 and Warhammer fans, so BioWare would have to do something special.

Well, they're going head-to-head with World of Warcraft with their Star Wars franchise (probably the biggest competitor they'll ever face), so I can see them doing that for other genres as well.

Part of the BioWare formula seems to be, "Can we make a successful game of this genre and can we add a ton of dialogue to it?" or "Can we successfully combine two genres and can we add a ton of dialogue to it?"

It works most of the time.

More or less. Gears of War has a more advanced cover system (includes SWAT turns, rolls etc) and more varied weapons (grenade launcher, charge-up Torque Bow etc).

I think BioWare need to incorporate more GoW mechanics. It's not too much to ask for the ability to evade or crouch in cover, is it?

Mass Effect 3, Gears of War only RPG, with special powers and characters that have personality.

More GoW for the combat would be good, only no chainsaw bayonets please.

Frankly I don't want bioware to try an RTS, simply because I feel they'll suck at it. They lack the expertise.

Well third company should do it.
Same thing is with many Star Wars games.
