I've encountered an unusually high number of Homeworld fans on this site, actually.

Possible Factions?
-Systems Alliance (Human)
-Citadel Fleet (Asari, Turian, Salarian)
-Terminus Systems (Batarians)
-Geth Heretics (Geth)
-Skyllian Verge (Blood Pack Krogan/Blue Suns)
-Rannoch Armada (Quarians/True Geth Alliance)
-Rachni Cluster (Rachni)

It's doable.  I do like the factions.  How that relates to colonies/ships/space stations/research centres is interesting.)

Alliance (Asari, Turian, Human, Salarian)
Independents (Cerberus, Mercenaries, Batarian, Asari Commandos, SSTG, Vorcha)
Quarian (Individual Ships, Clans, Admirals)
Geth (Indoctrinated and Runtimes)
Rachni (Forgotten, Indoctrinated and saved ME1)

This could essentially be more diverse (and if written properly) richer than what Frank Herbert thought up (which is essentially Star Wars.)

That also sounds pretty good. 4 or 5 factions is the best number, assuming they can make each faction as diverse as the ones in the original Starcraft.

It would also be great to see something on the level of the Starcraft Star/Galaxy Editor. The possibilities with that editor are amazing considering it was supposed to be "just another RTS" game.

A Mass Effect RTS would be revolutionary enough to be *both* space and ground. I don't know how they'd manage it, but it's possible.

It'll still need a Map Editor like Starcraft, though.

I have nothing against Homeworld, but Starcraft has the superior level editor (Starcraft II looks amazing as well).

The success and lasting power of an RTS is more decided by how much effort the developer is willing to put into game balance.

Talk about raping the hell out of the series. This would all have to somehow tie into Mass Effect, and every race going to war with each other, doesn't fit quite right.

The default Shepard in ME2 has the Council and Wrex dead - and I bet the default Shepard in ME3 will have the Quarians and Geth at war with each other - so the galaxy is going to be in ruins even after they defeat the Reapers.

Setting it both as a space and ground RTS would blow my mind, but if given the choice, my preference is for space. As much as I didn't like Ender's Game (Shut up, I just didn't, okay?), I did like hearing about how they had to adjust to a three dimensional playing field. It's what almost killed me when playing Homeworld, as I was so focused on the fleet ahead of me, I found myself completely boned when the enemy approached my mothership from "below."

There was a lot of kamikaze death. Yeah, let's see the ME developers add that tough choice into their game.

If anything, a Mass Effect RTS would prove to be a wonderous thing, set a few years after Shepard's run in the Mass Effect trilogy

I just hope its more along the lines of Star Wars: Empire at War

Naming it more to Mass Effect: Galactic Conflict :D

Factions:
Citadel Space
Terminus Systems
Reapers and allies

Kinda going around with the Citadel being more like the Empire cause well...its more centralized, more resouces, blah blah blah

Terminus systems more like the rebels, being more of stealing tech and other stuff

Finally the Reapers, Collectors and Heretic Geth.....Zan Consuitium ( i cant spell)

Second of all, its a matter of opinion when comparing Halo Wars with the Halo trilogy, WHY?
  • Completely different genera of games
  • Different outlooks on the same comflict
  • Personal likes and dislikes
....yeah im done

Wait - does that mean you liked Homeworld or you didn't like it?

I've never played it - I've only heard about the 3-dimensional combat. A space/ground RTS that works well would be revolutionary.

Haven't read most of the thread (probably should) but I like the general idea. I do believe, however, that the System Alliance should be part of whatever army represents the council. Assuming this is set after the ME trilogy, humans either dominate the Council, or are a part of it.

Either that, or make it four armies, which would clog up balancing.

Also, don't make mercenaries a playable faction. Rather, make them a neutral force on ground battles. Something like creeps hostile to everyone, or a mini-faction that can be recruited by players to bolster their forces. Or both, depending on the map.

I had more ideas, but they slipped me now...

So thy are hiring a multiplayer programmer, big deal? They have other games in development besides ME3...SW-TOR ring any bells?

The hiring ad specifically stated "BioWare Montreal" and "Mass Effect franchise". BioWare Austin hired their multiplayer programmers a long time ago.

Still:
Multiplayer =/= RTS

It only makes sense that BioWare will eventually make an RPGRTS or RTS competitor to Blizzard. Multiplayer is the strength of an RTS.

To be fair, they're slapping multiplayer in everything nowadays (and by 'they' I mean the videogame industry, not just EA). Specially on consoles, wich makes me think that it won't be a RTS.

I still prefer a RTS over a multiplayer shooter, but it's too early to tell what is going to be.

Here's hoping for Starcraft II's success and the inevitable riding on the coattails such success can lead to. Though I really don't think they need to worry about that.

Wow. I've been thinking about this for a while. It would be
cool if each faction, had either a unique power or unique super unit. Something
like this:-

Superpowers

Heretic Geth: Summon Sovereign - Sovereign is summoned for a limited
time. Most powerful unit in the game, but just temporary.

Quarians: AI Hacking - all vehicles and synthetics are hacked. If
upgraded, buildings can be stopped working for a limited time as well.

Turians: Orbital Strike - fairly self explanatory.

Humans: Cerberus - when activated, all technology can be researched
for a limited amount of time. Also adds bonus techs, like biotics of Jack's
talents, or Firewalkers.

Batarians: Bring Down the Sky - One use power, with delay. Brings down
an asteroid onto targeted area.

Collectors: Assuming
Direct Control – [/i]As Harbinger, take control of any drone. Also, Dragon’s Teeth – [/i]Use on dead enemies to
turn into husks. Send husks back to base and if you have enough, cash them in
for Scions or Praetorians. To compensate for both abilities, Collector resource
consumption is much higher.

Super-Units

Asari: Matriarch - Extremely powerful biotic.

Salarians: STG - Stealthy scout, that can sneak unseen into enemy
bases, giving you constant feedback.

Krogan: Vorcha - Vorcha can hijack enemy bases, and spawn there, like
the vermin they are.

Some of the names are quite clever. I approve this message. Bring down the sky sounds like it would be overpowered, however.

A map wide AI hacking skill would be overpowered too. It would mean an instant win against a geth player.

Played Warcraft III, I assume?

Extensively. Got it back in the days I still sucked at games enough for a single game to last me several months before I completed the campaign.

Never been big on multiplayer, though.

Never been big on multiplayer, though.

I was never a fan of regular melee matches on Battle.Net, but the creativity that goes into some of the custom UMS maps was astonishing.

People were practically making their own genres of mini-games using Blizzard's map editors.

DotA as a phenomenon was spawned on Battle.net. I know two games that aren't Warcraft, but that are essentially DotA.

I liked spending my time with the various TD maps, though I preferred the ones I could play solo. I never cared much for relying on people I don't know.

I think it would be more likely that they are planning to add coop or just plain old deathmatch mp to ME3 than do an RTS, they don't have to compete with Blizzard in every area and I find it even more likely that they are planning on shipping the ME-universe into the MMORPG-genre than the RTS, that's where the real money's at nowdays.

As I said, MP =/= RTS

And I am well aware of Starcraft 2, I've played every game blizzard has ever made with the exception of that superman-game I don't recall the name of.

Why would they start making another MMO so soon when Star Wars: The Old Republic hasn't been released yet? BioWare Mythic also has Dark Age of Camelot and Warhammer Online still running from another merger.

The job application says "Work with databases that allow for chat rooms, client/server games, player matching, player stats, etc."

- Player matching is not found in MMORPGs because thousands of people can be playing on one server at a time.

- Chat rooms (as opposed to voice chat) implies an RTS with a Battle.Net-type network to me.
