OMG are explosive sentries useful for anything besides a 1-2 second distraction?

Im playing as an Engineer in insanity and OMG is it frusterating. I think I used my exp points wrong. Im trying to get Jack at purgatory and im stuck in this one room where you have to shoot the shield generator towers. I've been doing that part for almost 2 hours(of course I took breaks and ate dinner).

That part is rediculous in insanity. First off im forced to stick to my biotics. recharge/overload simply because of the sheer number of foes that spawn against you. So after destroying the first tower and clearing the first group of enemies. I move my squad with me to destroy the second tower. I have to move them out because 2 enemies spawn behind you and enter from the door I know this because it was probably my 15-20th try.

So I kill one of the flankers then the 2nd one almost kills me but I melee him to death!(it was intense!!) So at that point 15 mins probably passed. and so I destroyed the 2nd tower and it was time to go a head to the third tower. there were 2 enemies camping to pick me off on the bridge. I try sniping them and using overload. Overload wasnt even doing much then for some reason. So I was just trying to kill em off but then they move back and there was no way I was going to chase them so that more enemies can kill me in 5 shots. So I use my useless explosive sentry to try and draw em out. I successfully picked one off with my sniper. and I only had 10 more bullets left.

About 10 more mins pass and more enemies come out and for some reason they were able to shoot through the same cover I've been using for the firefight

and they kill me in 6-7 shots.

At that point I felt sick and decided to type my insanity woes to you people.
So yeah did I waste points on the useless explosive drone? I mean it barely, BARELY does any damage to any opponent and the explosion is just as weak. SO WHAT GOOD IS IT???

It can knock over enemies. Especially husks. At least, on lower difficulties, before they get armor/shields. It's ok at clearing shields, but, since you have Overload...

Go with Assault, that little guy annoys the hell out of enemies. Each zap will cause the enemy to hesitate, not running or shooting, and the enemy will focus on the drone. Great fun.

Is it possible to rellocate points in this game or no?

should be after you complete either horizon or the collector ship(I forget which) and unlock the research.

I cant even imagine getting to that point if this game is this hard right now.

Knock out the generators faster. Once they're down, enemies stop respawning. Then you just have to survive the Warden and the enemies that are already out there.

I believe each one you take out also spawns a couple enemies.  But once they are all gone, no new ones come out.

And, yeah, it is.

I've played an Engineer and the Combat Drone is actually quite useful in certain situations.

It's easily spammable, and if you have a target, it will continuously distract that target (like, say, Harbinger).

If you use it without a target (aim it at the ground in front of you), it confuses the hell out of Husks and Abominations as they run into it. Repeatedly.

Also, Purgatory ends when you kill Warden Kuril. I don't even bother shooting at anything else other than the generators.

I've found that Explosive Drone doesn't seem to survive as long as Attack Drone, even though the game says they have the same amount of health. Also, the Explosive Drone doesn't always seem to explode when killed.

There isn't a walkthrough specifically for Purgatory, but AverageGatsby started a series on Engineering through Insanity

social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/105/index/1346889

I hope it helps.

My strategy there is to take out the first tower in the middle. Then run up the bridge to the left, and take out that tower too. Leave your guys down in the middle though to create distraction. I then run up to that set of barricades between the Warden and the central tower, and from there you get a box target on the third tower near the door where the soldiers come out of.

Once that tower is down, back-track to the start of the bridge area. There's a whole lot of barriers that pop up to hide behind. From there, work on the Warden with your squad-mates hiding behind the barriers beside you. Your squaddies will take out the bad guys who are funneled down a corridor of death now, but as soon as you drop the Warden, it's mission over.
