I just wanna thank you for making this wonderfull guiide wich really helped me to understand a little of this class. And also gave me courage to start a insanity playthrough, wich now I'm addicted.

I've made some videos, merely to show to my friends, but they shows how much I have improved with this guides helps(I know that I'm no where near the people that posts videos, but still...)

Great vids Aynien! Cool montage and music too.

You already are a skilled Vanguard but using melee more often would make you even better. You can use melee when shooting and/or between shots. In the first vid you are shotgunning enemies with just a sliver of health left. Melee would've killed them easily so you can save shot for some other enemy.

Here's a Kronner Vanguard vid using melee only (no weapons) against Shadow Broker goons demonstrating how powerful melee can be: ME2 Melee kills

(sorry for the intros, I'm working on them '-')

The ending are cool though ;)

Not seen any Vanguard vids for awhile, the charge montage was pretty cool and the intros and outros were funny.

yeah on the first video i wasn't so used to CQC and to use Shotguns(soldiers bad habits), but i'm getting more used to do it now. Thanks for the tips ^^

After the introduction of the Mattock, which weapon do you suggest to pick on the Collectors Ship? I'm doing fine with the Scimitar su far (Insanity run), so I was thinking to choose AR to improve my performances in the middle range distance.

If you have the GPS you don't really need AR training for those middle range distances. It's good at pretty much any range an ar can be used, strips most defenses with one shot and can be charged up for more damage than the claymore (takes 2 seconds out of cover thou).

Welcome back.

Dude if you haven't lurked here at all since last seen, there have been some crazy variations that have developed over the months (not really too many on the Vanguard though, being as they're already awesome at what they do).

Apparently a shockwave heavy Vanguard is in the works that will revolutionize the way we play Vanguard.

Are there videos of an Insanity Shockwave Vanguard?

Coming soon.  Have to redownload all my video stuff.

Welcome back Sabre.

Edit:  I never said revolutionize, just that I will show them to be fun and viable.

Hrm. Thanks for the guide. Once I finish my Adept run on Insanity I may give a Vanguard a go (though on a lower difficulty). I haven't done much CQC (other than getting the Brawler achievement) so I want something a little more lenient than Insanity :D

Don't worry, dude. Just go for Insanity straight away, imho Vanguard is actually a really forgiving build to play.
Might take some time to adapt (;)) at first, but you'll get the hang of it soon enough, just make sure you figure out how to use Charge's shield restores. When you have played Insanity before you will know when to hide and when to unleash hell. You'll just be unleashing it a bit more up close and personal this time around :P

I'm going to disagree with you on the Vanguard's forgiving nature.  At the risk of voicing a dissenting opinion (gasp), I'd have to say that the Vanguard features the steepest learning curve of all of the classes on Insanity.  It could be beneficial to learn close quarters combat and how to handle it with, say, an Assault Sentinel first.

In my own experience I was able to play my Vanguard through Insanity fairly easily, considering I had not played a Vanguard or Insanity at that point. I do, however, have a gaming history deeply rooted in FPS games on pc.

Imho just watching one of those instructional vids in the OP should be more than enough to start Vanguarding one's way through Insanity, just as long as you make sure to max Charge asap. I feel playing on lower diff to get the hang of the build is unnecessary, but to each their own.

Sorry, I only meant that half-jokingly, given how unpopular shockwave is.

Here's my personal rules on when to charge on Insanity.
When not to charge:
1. When you're not playing a Vanguard.
When to charge:
1. When you see an enemy.
If you are dying too much with your Vanguard then the problem is not that you're being too aggressive, the problem is you just aren't being aggressive enough.

Have fun reloading

Agreed with Sabre. Charge isn't always the answer. It's just usually the answer. I know you're largely being facetious, Scrogu, but if you're not taking a lot of cover then you're playing on Normal or Casual. Charge is unfortunately not up ALL the time and neither is your shield/barrier.

If sabre can resurrect this thread, then I will revive this year old conversation. ;)

Charge IS the answer.
You don't need to take cover.

I wonder if this strategy work for the console players. I mean the pc version has those quick commands and a much higher precision with the mouse.

Someone who managed to pull it of with similar strategy on the console version?

I don't know if it's matter anyway, i bet it's not that big of a difference, i'm just curious since i only own the 360 version. I find Vanguard played on Insanity with that strategy a little bit difficult. =P

Well, of course PC has much better controls, console users are at a disadvantage in pretty much all shooter games. If there was a PvP mode, I don't think the best console player would ever beat an average PC player given the controls.
But I have seen ScroguBlitzen decimating enemies on Insanity (xbox360) using Scimitar, so it is certainly doable.
Enemies are supposedly tougher in the PC version, but devs have not said in what way etc.

Welcome back Sabre, good to see veteran Vanguard back!

@Jedi07.  Yes, Sabresandiegos aggressive playstyle works on XBox360.
Here is a suicide run with cryo ammo for comparison.

Our main disadvantages on XBox360 are:
Aiming is more difficult.
The horrible aim assist makes aiming even worse.  (Especially noticeable with close combat or snipers.)
We can only map 2 extra powers and 1 power per ally. (This really sucks.)

I think we have a slight advantage though with movement.  Our analog stick allows smoother control than digital arrow keys.

To improve your ability to aim quickly you need to set your controls to high sensitivity.
This makes it more difficult to aim accurately though so you will need to use the left stick motion for fine-grained aiming.  (You can only do this when not docked in cover.  Cover sucks anyways and Vanguards never need it.)

Also, you should note that Sabresandiego is ridiculously good.  He makes it look easy.

I think PC gets an advantage in movement too. You need only one key (W) + mouse to walk/run wherever you want. I'd really like to know what is the difference (as far as enemies and their damage output, accuracy, health etc. go) between xbox/ps/pc versions of the game.

One thing I like to do is to circle-strafe around an enemy so that after they stagger, I'm behind them and they have less chance to shoot back at me. Circle strafing also lets you get closer to the nearest cover while keeping an eye on other enemies, especially when you've charged to the back of the field and they're behind you at the beginning. And since the controller is analog, you can vary your speed much easier. With the keyboard and mouse, your lateral movement is one speed, however you are more accurate and do the reload trick much better. Using weapons like the Claymore, as ScroguBlitzen said, with the controller you need to "aim" with lateral movement because you need to let go of the right thumbstick to do the reload trick. Sometimes I have to predict where my target will end up, aim it there, and then use my lateral movement to catch it. But with weapons like SMGs or Scimitar it's much easier to circle strafe because I don't need to let go of my aiming.
