Perhaps you folks could answer this question for me.  I've posted this as a thread but not gotten many responses:

My Vanguard has been getting creamed lately.  I've decided that I need a
defensive biotic ability, but I can't decide between Barrier or Reave.
I've playtested both extensively so far.  I find Reave handy in that
it's both a defensive and offensive ability, but very short and
ineffective in a long battle.  Barrier I've found to be more effective
in longer battles, but limits my offense, and to be truly effective, it
has to be maxed, which means that I have to shaft points from Pull
altogether, and thus, hamper my ability to get the Tactics achievement
with biotic combos.  Area Reave doesn't seem to do much either, and
again, to max it I have to shaft Pull.  I've got Charge and Shockwave
maxed, and there's no way I'm giving either of those up.  Thoughts?

Dude, no joke...  in my experience, I survive more when I Charge more.  Tack on Squad Cryo if the baddies are really beating on you.  I totally recommend Pull on every Vanguard, but make survivability your priority.  We were just talking about Pull Field Vanguards and I think they're awesome, but managing cooldowns can be tough for someone just trying to stay alive.

If you can confidently stroll into the last room in Zaeed's loyalty mission and Charge the place up, then you probably don't need our help.  If you can't, you may want to think about increasing your life-span vice increasing your toolbox.

I thought you were saying to use it before a charge to take advantage of the stagger. Still not understanding why Jack's shockwave is awesome for Vanguard. That positioning video was awesome, but Vanguard moves around so much that it doesn't really work the same way. I need to see a video of a vanguard making good use of Jack's shockwave on defended enemies.

Did Jack constantly switch off squad cryo for warp ammo? Also your beard needs braids :P

Your a bastard.  I'm going to have to video this, aren't I?  Give me a day or two and I'll have something for you.  Going to bed now, hopefully can record and post tomorrow.

And I have braids in RL, I didn't want to flaunt on my avatar...

Edit:

"Sure thisisme, no need for video evidence!  It might not be for me, but I'll believe you..."      None of that here.=]

Move the folders from Characters you aren't playing somewhere else and try it again.

I must see this shockwave usage with my own eyes :o

I just don't see how its that great for Vanguard. You still didn't let me know about the ammo switching problem. You can't really use squad cryo on those characters with that stupid "feature" still around.

Have only done the last mission a few times with her as a Vanguard since discovering my new love for her.  Bring her around on my Soldier and Infiltrator since it happened.  This, by the way, is very new.  But it all revolves around my choice to avoid spike damage.  You'll see.  I love it.  But I also liked bringing Kaidan along in ME1, so I may be crazy.

Oh, right.  So yeah, she kept turning it off, so I just retrained to Pull Field while I was running around.  Believe me, it's hard to lose Cryo, but I feel like if I don't have people telling me that I'm dumb for doing something, I feel like I'm being complacent.  Hence, bringing Jack along with me.

Edit:  I wasn't calling anyone in here dumb...  just the general consensus of playing a Vanguard, then Cryo, and then a CQC Infiltrator, then not taking a bonus power, then using strategy instead of Miranda/Thane/Samara for every mission, then Jack.  So yeah, not aimed at anyone here.

Edit: Edit:  Yikes.

I don't think your'e dumb, not yet anyways :o

It will have to be impressive since I'm already loving Tali/Miranda/Samara/Legion with squad cryo for the majority of the game.

Sino, just watched you vid where you do it in 4:10 (minus the none game time), it's almost like I'm watching my own playthrough that I posted about earlier, though I was under the influence at the time, which I think made me play better then I normally do.

Thisisme8, I think I see what you mean about using Jack's shockwave, sounds like a good idea to me. As for losing out Cryo, thats no biggie, I usually never take it as I like to have as many boitic powers as I can, even if I don't use em. (Either shockwave/pull 10/10 with 1 in barrier, or swap it around for 10/1 and 10 in reave depending on my mood at the time)

Nice vids.

Have you tried fighting the Colossus one-on-one? The method you are using is definitely the proper way, but it's longer and riskier for a Vanguard. Nice job pulling it off though.

If you get around to that level again, try charging the Colossus right at the start. You'll get to fight it by itself, and it's a lot of fun to do. Less risk of dying too, if playing right -- that is of course if he doesn't use his machine gun, in which case you're likely going to die anyways. But fighting it Vanguard-style without dozens of geth attacking you is a ton of fun. Give it a shot.

Nope I have never fought the colossus at short range. What you describe sounds cool, but I hate charging ahead and skipping content. I might try it sometime for fun.

I don't really think of it as skipping content since all you're doing otherwise is fighting generic geth, first in static numbers and then against unlimited respawns until the Colossus is dead. I consider it to be a method of skipping frustration and tedium more than anything else. There's no story elements involved with the normal route, so I don't mind hurling myself at the Colossus right away and skipping the rest of the battle.

It is definitely cool, and once it's over it becomes one of the most rewarding combat experiences someone can feel while playing this game.

Why would you keep Cryo if you're running around with two squaddies with their own ammos?  Sure you can argue back and forth over whether squad cryo is better than their ammos in a vacuum...but the benefits of the free points are just huge.

If I was going to run around with Grunt and Jack I wouldn't even think about taking Squad Cryo.  Pull Field and 3 ranks of Barrier or Reave, no question.

This is definitely something to think about.

However once I figured out how to remove my squad member's points in their ammo types, they became a whole lot more useful.

I heartily endorse your use of Reave in the new video.  Much better.  Note that many of the warp explosions you set up could have been done with Samara Reave -> Shepard Pull just the same.

The main opportunity to use Reave is when collectors are flying in; you can blast them when they first appear, before they touch down.  You can't Charge them for a few seconds, and Reave buys you a naked target to send flying at essentially no time cost.

Pull on a vanguard is good, and alot of fun to use. There is one huge advantage to using pull on your teamates instead though, and that is that it is instant cast and doesnt use your cooldown.

Much, much, better than any of your previous vids. In others you play quite timidly, seemed like you did a lot more charging and using the shotgun at melee range where it's SUPPOSED to be used and switching to the pistol when your shooting from mid range. Can't see myself beating that time using charge alone, well done.

Thanks sinosleep. I do play more timidly in my tutorial, but thats mainly because its meant as a video teaching aid for my tactical strategy guide. In the newest video I wanted to basically unleash hell while maintaining my tactical approach.

Nice vid, though I am wondering how come that Pull Field works on shielded (well, they have barrier) enemies?

If they have a barrier still on I think they turn blue but dont get pulled.

Thanks, that is my favorite mission in the game. The speech shepard gives before the mission starts, the music in the background, Talis voice giving you a sense of urgency, etc... It gets my blood pumping and is my favorite part of the game.
