I've noticed quite a few of the topics here are suggestions for Mass Effect 3. Now I'm not pretending this is ever going to be paid any attention, but it's something that's been on my mind and I'd appreciate anyone else's thoughts on the matter.

Undoubtedly one of the most beloved aspects of Mass Effect is the writing. Not the plot, exactly, but the dialogue. You get to know the people around you, and the best part is - they feel like real people! With feelings, and motivations and everything. My only problem with this is the whole "getting to know your crew" gets a little formulaic. You complete a mission, then make your rounds to see what conversation options just got unlocked.

One of my favorite parts of all of Mass Effect 2 was getting drunk with Dr. Chakwas. I'm not saying she's a superior character or anything, but the style of the scene really changed the business of talking to the cast around you. I'd like to see more things like this - maybe a scene at some point eating breakfast with all your team mates, or playing a sport, or just relaxing in some lounge after the tension of the mission is past. I'd love some of this - these moments are what bring life to the characters. Sure they could just tell you about their lives, or it could be in passing during something innocuous. I would never suggest toning down the violence, or making the game all about relationships and feelings and crap, but the little scene with Dr. Chakwas gave me more connection to this game than all the "anomaly" side-missions combined.

Please! Feel free to give a little input. I would like some reasoned arguments for or against this kind of thing, but sarcasm is welcome too, as long as it's clever.

I agree. Real life scenes of normal interaction have largely played no role in video games and the ones that are depicted are feel forced and fake. The Chakwas scene while not the most awe inspiring has some definite real life feel and believability. I agree that more scenes and interactions in this fashion are needed.

But in my opinion over half the LI scenes in ME2 felt forced almost to the point of complete after-thoughts that were slapped together by a coffee buzzed intern after a night of snorting cocaine and getting wasted at the strip bar and going home alone... only to go the whole next day sexually frustrated until finishing the LI scenes and leaving a small wet-spot in their pants. In short the LI scenes and interactions in this game were half-assed and poorly implemented.

Yes, the Love Interests do seem to fall head over heels for you after 3-4 conversations. Though the loyalty mission things helps a little. We need more conversations and conversations that aren't merely

Shepard:Tell me about yourself'

Teammate:I was born Jan. 5 on KJAHF planet and I'm a hardened mercenary/mechanic/soldier/operative/assassin.

Shepard:Fascinating.

Teammate:Make love to me right before the final mission!

I agree, those small things add the drama, like saving the doctor in the first one or all the stuff that took place in the dance club. When you got to kill Wrex it was a very climactic moment. I loved that story telling and I'd love so much to kill Grunt.

Yes, the Chawkwas scene was one of the first "missions" I did, and I was very excited for more like this in the game. I was pretty let down, but the game made up for it when I FINALLY got to try to romance Tali.

I felt like Mass effect 1 and KOTOR was a lot like that, definetly. They were kind of robotic. Just a little.

Player: So what's your deal?
Bounty hunter: I'M A VICIOUS TAKE-NO-PRISIONERS BOUNTY HUNTER WITH A SECRET HEART OF GOLD.
Player: *Chooses good dialogue option*
Bounty Hunter: LET US SEX.

But Mass Effect 2 was a lot better, in my opinion- mainly because of the loyalty missions. Definetly stopped the thing where they start pouring their souls into you as soon as you say "What's up?". They made all the main missions based entirely around the characters, and that worked pretty well at removing the traces of robot for me.

The real problem shows its ugly head when you're just cruising around the ship looking for more dialogue. It's terribly immersion breaking.

On the GiantBomb podcast, they suggested a pretty damn good solution: Have a lounge or somewhere where people go if they've got something to say to you. If someone wants a chat, have them just come up to hang around near you. That would help. And it makes sense- if they want to talk, they'll come up and talk. Not sit in one place of the ship all day, hoping you might drop by for a chat.

On top of that, having to do a little side mission to make the romance work, ON TOP of the loyalty mission- nothing big, just something like getting the brandy for Dr. Chakwas- would make it even better, IMO.

A lounge would definitely break the routine some, but only if what the people there were doing varied some. If Garrus is always sitting at the same couch, then it's the same thing, but centralized. I think it would just help a lot if the characters would move some. I really liked the way characters in Mass Effect 2 moved around the room as they spoke. I think if they could add other activities and settings in the background of the conversation, it would go a long way to making us feel involved in these characters' lives, and not just narrated to.

The conversation in Mass effect seems like a step up from KOTOR, which was a step up from Baldur's gate, which was a big ass step up from things like Zelda. The next series will probably do exactly what I'm asking, or something similar, but I'd like it for this one, when I'm already so interested in the characters.

Very humorous edit there, by the way. Image IPB

i liked how the ship scenes were handled in flight in kotor2. gave the characters more depth and also made it seem more like they were all actually occupying the same ship together.

YES. GOD, YES.

I really did feel obligated to "make rounds" after every mission. Felt like work, very annoying. Thank you for expressing my feelings. ;)

Regarding characters moving about during conversation: Yeah, that's cool and all but Liara and Aria sitting down and standing back up all the goddamn time really UPSET ME.

Hah, yes, well. I suppose if something's worth doing, it's worth doing well? It was a little obnoxious the way some characters would pace in exactly the same way, so that when that particular conversation option was finished they would be back to their original starting point. Hence the standing up and sitting down all the goddamn time.

However, I thought it was a lot more natural than in most games when Garrus walked down the hall as you were talking about his squad, and Miranda walked over to the window as the conversation moved on.

The way it was handled in KOTOR 2 was nice - you come in, and someone is doing something new if they really want to talk to you.

I agree. It would have even been cool just to see some of the squad sitting down at the mess for a meal now and then, or if we just bumped into them in a corridor somewhere. That would have made them seem like they were not chained to their locations.

For that matter, it would have been nice to see ANY crew walking around.

I want to see the new/old crew interact with others crew members. I want to see how they get along.

Maybe say speaking to Thane after 3 convo's you bump into Thane talking to Garrus playing cards having a laugh.

Or after having 3 or 4 convo' with Garrus, you come back to have another convo for the 5th time and he is argueing with Tali for perving.

Pretty much agree with everything in this thread. The convos and characters are gold but accessing them feels a bit forced. At least in ME2 everyone had a sort of home on the ship instead of standing around in the same spot all the time.

I think the tenor of all the replies here is that we're all in basic agreement. We love the dialogue, but the way we access it is forced.

Yes! It would be great to see the other characters have something to do with each other throughout the game, instead of just the 2 arguments you have to break up. I suppose that was what I was getting at with the whole "eat breakfast with the crew" thing. Put us into more social situations! have three person conversations and new settings for dialogue!

Well I appreciate your guys' input, I'm gonna go post the main ideas I got here in the Mass Effect 3 wishlist.
