I like the tone of his voice but his acting skill is a bit lacking IMO. Because it's the player who doesn't get all too emotional I don't find it a huge deal.

I guess I can kinda get behind the "tabula rasa" theory on Meer's voice acting.  Most times someone rationalizes their preference for Meer over Hale it's "Shepard shouldn't have emotions because he's a soldier," which is BS, or "Shepard shouldn't have emotions because he's a killing machine," which is dependant on each individual playthough and certainly not canon.

That said, I find Hale in general to be very good in 1 and 2 and Meer in general to be simply tolerable.  However both do have moments of greatness and of… not so greatness.  Meer tends to have the most truly cringeworthy moments though.

Agreed. Shepard SHOULD have emotions that line up with the players ideals: a player playing a Paragon Shepard should have a Shepard with kind, sympathetic inflections. A player playing a Renegade Shepard should have a Shepard with harsher, biting inflections. The player subconsciously MAKES their character take on one of these personas, and Meer's flat VA conflicts with both player's emotional expectations.

I think the main problem with Meer's VA is simply that it isn't his real voice. His "Shepard" voice is much deeper than his real one, which in turn gives up a LOT of his inflection in order to try and get that "sexy, low-tone commander" feel.

I prefer playing male, simple because that is how I always have played as,  and  renagad male shepard is to fun I mean, whenever he says "conrade let me make this perfectly clear....this is not acceptable" I lol because he says it in a perfectly calm tone :D

Mark Meer is really inconsistent. Sometimes his VA is great (Tali's trial) and other times (First meeting with TIM) he sounds bored and indifferent.

I think that's there is nothing wrong with the voice acting on either male or female shepard... it's more of how the voice and the visual of them speaking that gets to people. Easily solved by wearing helmets especially on female sheps because I for the life of me have a hard time getting her to look good.

Meer is awesome in both games, I don't know what you people are going on about. Hale's voice just grates on my ears. Must be my military service kicking in, it's be awesome having my CO be Meer, Hale I just couldn't respect.

I prefer Meer and for me he is entirely believable as a cool, confident marine. I really don't understand the "hate" towards one VO or another

Got no big problems with the voice or voice-acting of the male- shepard. Althoug sometimes i got the feeling i had a nerdy voice, specially when you have a bad-ass black/polynesian appearance.

But a great future would be to choose between 3 or 4 voices (heavy/soft voice, English accent you name it). Saint Rows 2 had this feature, which was nice.

Having this feature, also specifies your own shepard more, you can give him more international "Allure" so too speak.

But I think it would be heaps of work for EA/Bioware and could effect the voice- acting in a negative way (not being seroius anymore).

Thus Bioware should have started it before ME1 went for sale 2,5 years ago.

oh here we go... yet another feminist post about subjective voice-acting. one day you people will have to get over the fact that default john shep is a man, you know.

Ok, we get it, since maleshep is male he is bad.

Look, I am sure both are satisfactory.  These type of observations are too based on taste to come to any conclusions.

I think it might also have something to do with what one want from a voice. I think, and I guess many with me, that maleShepard is quite neutral in what he says most of the time, leaving gaps to be filled in by the player. FemaleShepard on the other hand seems to put more emotion into the voice, giving the player not only the line, but also delivers with a suitable(?) feeling. That leaves little room for interpretation by the player.

Regarding skill, Meer admittedly did not do that well first, but he grows very quickly to do a fantastic job, whilst as it would seem Hale starts good and keeps that level.

Personally, I prefer the first way and Meer's voice work, but this is a matter of taste.

I was actually very pleased with Shepard's male voice in both ME1 and ME2.

The problem is that both of the Shepard voice actors are like cartoon voices played (literally) by comedians or cartoon voice actors, then people get butthurt when they realize that someone doesn't like their version of Shepard and whines about it on the forum.

Male Shepard = cliche hero guy

Female Shepard = fat middle aged single mother of three trying to sound tough

I really like male Shepard's voice, yeah it's a bit monotone at times but it really works great for the kind of Shepard I play as, and it just seems to fit the general perception I have of Shepard in general.
