Am I the only one who thinks the voice acting for maleShep is seriously below par ?

Yes, you are.

Eeeeeh. I'm actually with you, ikkedenchte. But I'm starting to understand why there's such a difference in opinions. Meer and Hale deliver very different performances (Hale more emotional and personal, Meer more stoic and soldier-esque). It's only natural that people would love one VA and hate the other.

I'd put money on the fact that Bioware wanted it that way; to turn off as few players as possible.

oh here we go... yet another feminist post about subjective voice-acting. one day you people will have to get over the fact that default john shep is a man, you know.

I'm a dude and I hate Meer's acting and love Hale's... so your "theory" is invalid. Also thanks to the VA my personal canon Shep is Femshep now... :police:

I do think the male Shepard's voice is very monotone and that is why I tend to play as a female most of the time.

People have said that it lets you inject your own personality into the lines more but I don't really think that is the case for me.

For example there is one point in the game where Shepard has the interupt choice to comfort Tali and the way that the male Shepard said the line had me thinking "yep he doesn't mean any of that, he's saying it to get in her knickers," (which he did so a win for him there). He simply didn't sound as if he genuinely cared.

I certainly don't think he does a terrible job, just that it really doesn't suit how I expect Shepard to be.

I guess I'm in the minority but I thought the male voice is a lot better than the female. I feel like the male voice captures the essence of Shepard because it's straight to the point without any subtle undertones and doesn't feel forced when the character speaks. The female voice on the other hand seems like the voice actor tried too hard and was trying to be a "badass" with a little raspy quality and deepness. The male Shepard voice actor knew exactly to portray and the female voice actor tired to make the character her own and failed by over acting. Don't even get me starter on Liara... they need to hire a new voice actor for her - it felt like I was watching a Hollywood B movie when she spoke :/

I didn't even think he sounded particularly interested in gaining knicker-access. It was more "emotionally dead man has no clue how to behave so tries something like what he saw in a movie once."

Agree, Meer seems to try really hard not to overact which at times can be interpreted for lazy voice work.   Hale on the other hand seems to try and have a gruffer voice than she normally does and it sounds funky. Now I think Hale can do good voice work just look at her work in KOTOR. My only real issue with Hales work in this game is that she..pauses..all...the..time...because..she..gets..paid..by..the..hour.

Wow.  Of all the complaints one might reasonably make about Meer, that is definitely NOT one of them.

Hale in ME2 struck me as trying to act like...a...female William............SHATNER!  Ok, she wasn't nearly as over the top as Kirk.

Of all the five or so friends I've talked to about how horrible maleshep's voice acting is, only one agrees with me. Hale's acting just completely blows his efforted reading-from-the-page delivery... at least, for me. This thread is evidence that I'm not crazy. Why is he so horrible for some people but fine for others?

Male Shepard: Sounds as if he could be a former military officer and it shows when he speaks to Tim. Despite what choices you make during the conversation you feel he has control of himself and his emotions to get to the core of the issue. I like to think speak softly but carry a big gun.

Female Shepard: I haven't played besides from the original Mass Effect but if her voice acting is considered better because she is more emotional then she doesn't suit the image I have of a former high ranking military officer. That view is from a retired service member.

I didn't hear Hales performance as mind blowing as seems to be suggested on the forums. To me they are about on par with each other. Light years better than anything Bethsoft has done, but not mind blowing awesome as some people on here suggest.

Good point, and one I'd like to add to my list of positives for maleShepard as well.

not being sexist here, but how many high ranking officers do you know who are female? Just wondering.

Mark Meer did a great job, and his voice really suits my Shep great. That's a definite pass in my book!

Everyone says there is a lot of emotion in the female shep performance. All I hear is devoicing the last 2-3 syllables and very unreal intonation (no curves characteristic for English). I think Meer did a better job being neutral, although it does sometimes come through a bit dull (while Hale is just forced). So Mark, if you are reading this: well done. :)

What I don't get is why paragon/renegade replies are not voiced differently in either sex, and why is there no shouting in situations like Zaeed blowing up the refinery.

I do have to say however, I am playing a female Shepard now and I enjoy myself just the same. So Jennifer, if you're reading this: well done. :)

(btw: It's a shame Elnora's voice didn't get more coverage. That was good. )

Meer's intonation is much better than Hale's, especially Renegade. Both are phenomenal though.

This.

ManShep sounds more like a military commander to me than FemShep, but I'm aware that others have differing opinions.  If you don't like it just roll the other gender and be happy, though I personally think that its the trailers with defaultShep that colours alot of people's perceptions, with my manShep he actually sounds and acts cool.  People just don't realise how their perception of someone's voice can change due to what they are seeing, which gets even worse when someone creates a custom manShep after watching all the trailers, their brains will tell them that what they are seeing doesn't fit with the voice, and so they will think its wrong.

That should be irrelevant.  All officers are expected to hold themselves to the same standard regardless of gender  in the military.

I'm having a bash at playing another femShep at the moment and god I really hate her va in this game. She was great in ME1, not so much in ME2. I find it hard to sit through some of her dialogue. This is the first playthrough of ME2 where I'm skipping conversations. Woe.

Meer, however - I really like his va. I think it's better in ME2 than in 1. I admit there are moments where it falls flat, but I don't care.

I'd prefer Hale's voice over Meer since the "helping assistant" scene (Eden Prime) in ME1... "Say goodnight, Manuel". I've tried to give a maleShep a second chance, but it's impossible. Even Mass Effect is not her best job, it's still miles away from Meer's va, too robotic.
