Hi guys,
I've been replaying ME now that ME2 is out and I've upgraded my RAM to 6 gigabyte. I slammed all the settings to maximum, so now I'm playing in 1920x1200 in resolution, highest setting for particles and so on.

The problem is that now and again the program will sort of slow down and become sluggish and a minute or so later it goes away and my FPS in up greatly again.

My computer:
6 gigabyte RAM
768 MB video memory (GeForce 8800GTX)
Intel Core2Quad Q6600 2.4GHz
And Windows Vista Ultimate x64 with Service Pack 1.
I've upgraded my Graphics Driver to the latest release from NVIDIA.

I would be able to understand that it's sluggish and runs with a low FPS if it did it consistently, but now it seems like it's peaking sometimes and sometimes it's not. And since I get very fluid graphics momentarily I think I should be able to run this game at this capacity.

Any thoughts?

Edit: Also, no crashes :)

Greets,

I don't think the RAM would be a problem, I'm playing on a PC with 2 gigabytes of RAM, Windows XP though. 4 GB would be sort of alright on Windows Vista for ME, I believe.

The only problem I can see here would be graphics card, perhaps it's a bit too low to run ME on the best possible settings? And I don't mean the card itself is too low, as far as I remember, ME1 has not-that-awesome optimalization, my only advice is too set Textures to High instead of Ultra High, it helped a lot on my PC (it's not as good as your I think, especially my ATI graphics card).

Oh an also, try playing in 1680x1050 instead, it helped a bit too, it shouldn't lower the quality of your visual experiences and would help your PC greatly. Well, at least it wouldn't lower the quality of my visual experiences.

My PC:

2 GB RAM,

512 VRAM ATI Radeon HD 3850

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4800+

Windows XP SP3.

Also playing on the highest possible details with an exception when it comes to textures - High instead of Ultra High, just on a lil' bit lower resolution.

Anyhow, hope I helped...

I just wonder why I get sort of "peaks" where the game will go very slowly and then a couple of minutes later it's fluid. Since it's fluid at times and not consistently slow I got the idea that my computer can handle the game at these settings but that something else is wrong.

I guess it's the bad optimation of code then. Too bad.

Thanks for the reply :)

Mass Effect was designed for console that doesn't run several processes at same time. Ctr+Alt+Del and end all unnecessary processes. Also try to set anti-virus/spyware programs to ignore your ME folders, or even turn them off, especiall Avira causes a lot of problems for many people.

Try setting the MaxAnisotropy to 0 its default is 4, I donno why but this really hits any PC hard if its used it just does >.<, also try adding Trilinear=True both these can be changed in BIOEngine.ini under [SystemSettings], I'll be tweaking around with ini settings from ME2 in ME1 maby I can better optimize ME1 that way as they use hypothetically the same engine (ME2 was optimized differently) so were see xD.

I can't seem to get the game to run completely smooth without turning down settings (have disabled most background processes and tried different graphics drivers and so on), which is very weird since it runs perfectly smooth from time to time on the max settings and then turns into syrup for a while and then goes back to being smooth.

It must be kind of crappy PC programming in ME1, since ME2 runs without a hitch on max settings (1920x1200 max everything) on this computer.

Thanks for all the replies guys, I'll turn down my settings next time I boot up ME1. No problem since I won't have to turn them down much.
