I was going to pick this game up but wanted to know more about it...

Is it anything like dragons age?

Is the price worth it?

How much game time would i get from this?

(any other info would be great!)

Thanks

Reminder to everyone that this IS a spoiler free forum. I won't take too kindly to people putting out spoilers here. Yes, that may include the Banhammer :)

So please, proceed in a non-spoilery fashion Thank you

Dragon Age operates more like an MMO, that's what sets it apart from Mass Effect for me. ME2 is very streamlined, in a good way, it's a weird genre-bend of third person shooting and RPG.

I'd recommend playing the first game first though, there's just so much story and decisions from the first game will actually affect the second. I'm more of a fantasy fan than a sci-fi fan myself and I'm usually not into space operas at all but Mass Effect is so immersive it hardly matters.

Get ME1 first, it's still new in quality and it's important for this epic tale.

If by like DAO you mean, does ME2 have an engaging story? then (personally) yes, indeed, a very interesting game.
But like most things on a forum, this is heavily related to a person's opinion. If you don't enjoy sci-fi, perhaps Mass Effect games are not for you.

To get the most enjoyment out of ME2, I highly suggest playing ME1, so you're caught up to speed on the story, and you're familiar with the lore, and you're able to import your save game from ME1 to ME2 so you can choose how some parts of the story pan out

Is the price worth it?

Personally? Absolutely. Few games are made with such cinematic quality, and the combat system, (personally) is incredibly fun, with different classes needing different battle tactics.

How much game time would i get from this?

That depends entirely upon how much time you invest in the game. If you're the kind of gamer that loves reading codex entries, in depth descriptions, and lore, and you're playing on a difficulty that is challenging to you, a difficulty that won't simply let you breeze through enemies, and you pretty much do every sidequest in the game,  than this game can easily take you 45 hours to complete,

That depends on what you like about Dragon Age?

I think the quality of writing and the game universe's depth are very similar, but for me that's where the similarities end. Mass Effect is much more geared towards action. The party members are good, but they aren't nearly as talkative as Dragon age's. ME is also considerably more streamlined. There's a radically different equipment sytem - you won't be finding new guns and armour everywhere. In fact, there's not much at all, but the armour does allow you to tweak it to fit how you wish to play.

Is the price worth it?

That is a question nobody can really answer for you. Since I enjoy the game, it is well worth it, but of course if you don't enjoy it, then I'd feel guilty for saying it is.

How much game time would i get from this?

My first playthrough was about 30 hours, and I skipped about half of the side content. Each playthrough since has involved doing everything, and they're all around 28 hours taking into account I skip conversations, but don't rush to finish.

The choices influencing the story don't make too much difference to anythng yet, so you might only want to play through it once. Since I love seeing everything in the game, and I really enjoy the gameplay, I'm onto my 5th playthrough now. I guess what I'm saying is, "Milage may vary". :P

Thats what I intended was ME1, perhaps in my rush I posted in the wrong forum..

Also was curious as to if buying a copy or getting it through steam would be best?

Well it's the right forum, but people just assume since ME2 is the latest. But yes, definitely, by all means get Mass Effect. The inventory system gets a little crazy, but the RPG/third person shooter is an excellent mix. I haven't enjoyed a story this much since the KOTORs.

Well from personal experience I would say yes on a technical level because of the amount of time I have spent with it.  I've completed my fifth play-through (and counting) and at very near around 30 hours per pop I have certainly exceeded my expected entertainment value from that initial $70 purchase.

Even further on a subjective level those 150 hours were spent with something that I've enjoyed more than most every other game I've played.  The combat feels great (and this is coming from a former Halo junkie) and the story is probably one of the most compelling and most unique I've had the pleasure of experiencing in gaming.  You could make individual gripes about a relative lack of meaningful dialogue or even substance in some of the side missions (N7 missions, miscellaneous hub quests) or the generally static environments but overall they do little to diminish the overall greatness that is ME2 and has been shown through critical and popular support for the game.

You could do a lot worse than ME2 but can hardly do any better in the single player space.

After reading your guy's posts and checking steam, I learned ME1 is only 20 bucks, figured it couldn't hurt!

Looking forward to a good story :)

Yes and no. Watch some youtube videos

Is the price worth it?
Yes

How much game time would i get from this?
I did everything in 35 hours (note: I did everything in DAO in 55 hours)

(any other info would be great!)
I'm too lazy for that. Watch/read some reviews

Note: Play ME1 before ME2 'cos playing ME2 before ME1 is like playing Awakening without playing Origins, or like watching Empire Strikes Back before A New Hope

Well if you're also looking forward to extra content down the road you might want to either try to pick up a new copy for that price or, barring that, simply purchasing access to the cerberus network for a used game.

Already, there's a fair amount of "free" DLC up there so it's well worth the extra price, whatever route you choose to pay for.

I hated dragon age and i dont understand how people who dont think its worth to read the whole manual and pausing every 3 seconds in gameplay is worth it.

Mass effect 2 was good, much better then DA but also worse then ME1. that said it is defeintly something that you should play.

Me2 also feels like a giant buildup for me3. In other words, doing me2 has defeintly gotten my hopes up of bioware (it was rather crushed when they joined ea and came out with DA).

The game the OP is talking about is ME1, not ME2. So the Cerberus Network isn't an option.

Don't play ME2 before making the decision of buying the first game too, because the combat in ME1, after having experienced ME2, will make you feel sorry for your money. Otherwise, ME1 is a great experience, highly recommended. One of the best stories in any game.

Seeing as how I cannot post in any other ME forums till I get this game registered, is there a forum post some place that could help me set up a good starting character to experience this game with first(or would a link to something be counted as a spoiler?)?

90% complete on steam, almost! :D
