The "best" team is so much more "what are you facing" dependent and less "what class are you" dependent.
If you're going up against the Collectors you're going to choose squadmates that can punch through barriers and armor. If you're going up against Geth, you want guys with Overload and AI Hacking. It doesn't matter what you have.

But as I play as a soldier, I usually have someone with Biotic abilities and someone with Tech abilities.
But as mentioned, it can vary from mission to mission.

This is an awesome team because you have Overload and Warp to deal with defenses. Excellent for fighting mercs and Loki mechs on some of the earlier loyatly missions. Also sniper rifles are the best weapon on squad mates because they never miss, and spend most of their time hiding and reloading (which is good).
Garrus/Zaeed
Same double sniper team which is so strong, this time you get squad disrupter ammo for and Overload for geth style fights. Inferno Grenade is also excellent against armor so this is a squad I love to take.
Miranda/Jacob
Miranda and anyone is an awesome squad, but Jacob brings inferno ammo along for everyone, and pull to allow access to warp bombs. Also the Evicerator is the best thing that ever happened to squad mates.
Mordin/Grunt
Sending grunt out front to attract gunfire allows you and Mordin to hand back and spam powers. Squad inferno rounds along with cryo is an awesome combo. Another good combo is Cryo blast and grunt's charge. If he charges a frozen enemy they shatter right away.
These are just a few squads that I have noticed I take often. So far I have no idea what to do with Jack. I vote her for worst squad mate. Also I am not really sure how to use Tali. AI hacking needs to have like a 3 min durations to be truly useful, I know the value of using drone to distract but who do you distract? Big geth, big mechs and Harb and when fighting all of those enemies I would rather have someone else.

garrus/miranda, miranda/thane or miranda/samara for warp bomb if i dont have pull yet. zaeed and either garrus/miranda/tali/legion if against geth(squad disruptor and zaeeds passive dmg and he can do the mission on his own it seems, he RIPS geth apart, its scary watching him go[insanity]).

In ME1 I loved playing with either a Wrex/Garrus team, or as an Adept, using Liara/Kaidan for pure madness. In ME2... I'm kind of all over the place.
In ME1, I always took Garrus and my Character's LI with me wherever I went. ME1 wasn't as strict as ME2 about certain character's expectations, thus it made it easy to pick your squad. Now I find myself choosing the squad based on what they can bring to the table on each mission. I find it more interesting since it means that you can spread around your squad more.

For the second squad mate, it really depends on the mission. An argument can be made to bring along pretty much anyone (depending on the situation) other than Jack and Jacob. They are both just terrible. Oh and Legion...he is actually pretty good, but by the time you get him, all that's left is fighting Collectors, which he is not well suited to do.

It really depends on the mission. A staple of any team though is Miranda. Her squad boosting passive ability is great no matter what, and Warp/Overload can handle pretty much any situation. She's also quite nice to look at.

Really because there were a couple of situations where I used Jack and Thane with Jack's squad warp ammo (while playing on Insanity) and Jack did just fine.

Since there's no achievement for using specific people like in ME1, you should always use the best people for the situation. Usually you know in advance what type of enemies you will fighting, if not, you can build a team that plays to your strength.
Oh ****! Mass Effect 2 met min\\maxing!
To be serious, just use the squadmates you like, the game is completely beatable even on Insanity with completely random squadmates who do not use their own skills. Sure, some missions are harder without certain squadies but hell, I took Tali and Legion to the missions where you had to kill Geth only because they were a must.
I'd take Mordin and Grunt if I could. But... I couldn't. Picked Tali and Grunt, later on Legion and Mordin.
Yes, it was on Insanity, no, I don't care it would be soooo much easier with Legion + Tali.

Or you can pick your favorites all the time and make them work. It's up
to you.
Yay!
No min\\maxing in cRPGs please! Let's not turn RPGs into single-player-WoW style games where people search for every possible percent of damage\\shields\\whatever else you want to make their characters even better. You should concentrate on plot, don't devote all your attention to damn damage % upgrades...

Too bad he putting up barriers half the time cancelling his Pull ability. But other then that he's a solid choice with decent weaponry.

I do not like to use the people with the power "AI Hacking" I think it is a waste. Sure you get an extra squad mate for a few seconds but you also have to keep an eye on him for when he turns on you. I think the power is more trouble then it's worth.
As a Vangaurd I use Miranda, Mordin, Grunt, Garrus and sometimes Jack and Thane.
As a Solider I used Miranda Grunt and Jack a lot.

Miranda and Samara(with Reave) are probably the overall best squamates. Not necessarily together but in a vaccum they have the most useful skills (Warp/overload and the almighty Reave).
