I was going to post this as a response in a thread that just got locked, so I decided to not waste the effort and create my own thread.
I haven't finished my first playthrough, yet, so I am not making a final judgement. So far, however, I think this game is superior to the original. The combat feels much more solid and immersive to me. The lack of a need to clean out your inventory is a relief. I like having fewer weapons with more substantial differences. The same for skills. It suits the game, and keeps me more involved with the story and the characters.
As far as story goes, I am just as involved, if not more so, in ME2 as I was in ME1. I absolutely loved bringing my character over and picking up where I left off. This is not a feeling I've experienced since Ultima VII. I feel like I have a history here, like I am truly continuing my story. People recognize me. The level of immersion and my inolvement with the story is comparable, so far.
I am much more attached to the supporting characters this time around. Obviously, it's a bigger focus. I like it.
I love the missions. I feel like I am doing more this time around. I like the darker feel to everything. I like the renegade/paragon interrupts, and I still like the system where I can be mostly paragon, but still push a guy through a window once in a while.
Mass Effect 2 does have some flaws, in my opinion. The planet scanning is tedious, there should have been a better way of handling resource collection. The fact that it takes so long to create a new character annoys me. The elevator rides in the first one did not annoy me, and I think I prefer them to the static loading screens this time around.I don't miss the mako too much. I hated driving around the random planets. Although I hate it less than the scanning in this one. I liked driving it around in some of the missions, and I got used to the control scheme. I do wish they had just improved on the system instead of just cutting it out.
So, it is still early. Yes, it's taking me a while to finish the game. I have a wife and three kids, so my game playing time is not like it used to be. But, I've been playing games for nearly 30 years, and I have played a lot of games on a lot of platforms. Mass Effect 1 is in my top 5 favorite games of all time, and I think I'll soon ammend that to cover the Mass Effect series. I don't see Mass Effect 2 as a huge step down from the first one. I think it is mainly an improvement, and I think in the end, I'll rate it a little higher than the first one.
I'll be replaying it, a lot.
Initial feelings about Mass Effect 2.
