Given the fact that you didnt know that she can be revived, i can imagine your thoughts. - "ewww.... WTF!!??"

Hah, yeah. For a while I thought it was to give her a proper burial or something - sure felt pretty good to finally bring her back.

While on the topic of BG2 vs ME2

What's up with the romance?!?! In BG you had to WORK, doing the right things saying the right stuff to get things going. In ME you just have to say yes, when time comes.

PLZ make ME3 more complicated!

Agreed.

A part of me died inside reading this comment.

Without BG2 there would've been no Mass Effect.

Pfft. Without Pong, there would be no BG2. Everyone worship Pong.

Miranda/Jaheira? Hmm, I dunno. I liked Jaheira alot more. And she needed a LOT more talking to. They all did. Viconia is still my favourite though. Especially through ToB. ... *Glares at Anomen and his silly haircut and "too many romance novels" accent*

See, Imoen is who I always think of when comparing Tali too. (Also see Imoen in Leliana from DAO.) It's funny, but I can still hear Imoen's opening line from BG in my head.

Imoen and Minsc are probably two of my favorite fictional characters of all time.

Heya! It's me, Imoen!

Yer all buffle-headed! But good call, Imoen is definately who I'd compare Tali to.

... Now I'm gonna have to go and install the BG games again. *sigh*

Would that make Jacob Minsc? 'Cause that would make me like him even more.

I think part of it had to do with the fact that BGII was a much longer game, so there was more in-game time to have twists and turns in developing your relationships with various characters. Also it was text-based, so not having to have everything fully animated and voice-acted probably eased the burden on the developers somewhat. To have something of that scale translated to the kind of audio/visual presentation that we see in Mass Effect 2 would probably end up with one game being spread across six or seven DVDs, or something.

I can see the OPs point.

I also feel the need to play BG2 suddenly. I wonder if I can get it to work ...

I've just realized that the female romance options for ME2 are very similar to the options for BG2.

Jaheira/Miranda: both have membership in an organization as a core part of their identity but can eventually resign due to their loyalty to the protagonist, both are set up as "second in comand" both have a forceful personality that can come across as ****y to some players

Viconia/Jack: background of physical abuse and rape, alternately warms up to and pushes the PC away, uses casual sex to forestall intimacy, can screw up romance by sleeping with her at the wrong time, can eventually have meaningful sex with her.

Aerie/Tali: Weakest correlation, but Tali is noticably sweeter and more easily flustered than the other two, only virginal LI. Both are the most morally good of the three.

Thoughts? If you played both, did your favorite female romance option match my breakdown?

I haven't done any of the female romances yet, so I can't comment, but from what I've seen of personalities, they do match up quite well. I much prefer Jaheira over Miranda. I prefer Jack over Viconia.  I prefer Tali over Aerie. ME2's winning so far.

As far as male romances go, in BG2 you've got Anomen, and that's pretty much it. In comparison, he's most akin to Kaidan -- they both have principles they're willing to fight and die for. But whilst I think Kaidan is a bit dull and wooden, Anomen is outright annoying in his arrogance. Though on the other hand, you can influence Anomen much more than Kaidan, who remains dull throughout the game. So for interaction, Anomen wins that one, sad as it sounds.

Oh, come now. Nothing can match the horror that was Anomen. I think he's partly responsible for my tendancy to play males.

Saerileth was based on Shakespeare.
Samara is based more on ronin samurai and medieval folk tales.

...but I guess they share a certain Courtly Love soupcon.

I can see a little of the logic comparing Jack to Viconia. The other 2? Not even close in my opinion. I guess if you have to find the closest comparison, Miranda = Jaheira is it, but Tali = Aerie? No, she's much closer to being Nalia or Imoen.

Tali and Imoen are definitely the most closely related characters between the two games. I <3 Imoen!!

I actually don't see the Jack/Viconia connection. They don't seem like similar characters at all. Heck, if anything, Jack and Aerie are most akin to one another. Both have had extremely traumatic experiences growing up which has made them emotionally disturbed adults. Jack just focuses her trauma into outward signs of aggression while Aerie keeps it inside. Once you Paragon romance Jack though, the similarities become pretty apparent.

God damn, I'd forgotten how whiny Aerie was. Though she does get more tolerable as the game goes on, and ended up growing on me eventually. In fact, I was quite distraught when Bodhi killed her and was quite horrified at the fact that I could keep her corpse in my inventory afterwards (this was before I discovered that you can actually bring her back to life).

I thought she was a tad whiny and annoying too. Until I actually thought about how she was held in a cage for years and shown at carnivals like a freak and then when her wings became atrophied from disuse they were brutally sawed from her back. And this was when she was still considered a child.

I started to empathize with her a bit more afterwards.

I guess i shouldn't be, but i've been suprised at the number of people who haven't heard of BG1 or 2, or the number of people who didn't get the Boo reference. I was thinking recnetly that one of the unfortunate things about gaming as a medium is the rate at which the delivery technology is outstripped by subsequent technologies. Unfortunately rendering some games as "unplayable" to certain groups. With games that are only a few years old having outdated graphics ect. It happens to a certain extent in other mediums i guess too: black and white films; older forms of English or other languages, but not at the same rate. Too bad. Everyone that likes the mass effect series should give those old games a chance. I'm pretty sure most of them wouldn't be disappointed

Amen brother. To go even further back - while playing ME2, I noticed some similarities to Star Control 2 (I can't even remember how long ago that was, but I still recall the game quite vividly), particularly in the way you'd move your ship between star systems and entering orbits etc. Hell, they even have that that awkward inertia thing where sometimes you completely overshoot your destination by a wee bit because you didn't stop accelerating soon enough. I wonder how many Mass Effect fans have played that classic game.

Or Whale's Voyage!  Now that's a space RPG suckers!
