Do you think reading the Dragon Age books that have been released before the game itself will add to the enjoyment of playing the game or do you believe it will take away from the joy of discovering that which is presented to you as you play?

Don't worry, you can read them beforehand, afterward or just ignore them and still enjoy your experience with Dragon Age. Don't feel like you are left out, if you don't experience everything a franchise has to offer. You are not, as long as you have a good time.

Cheers

I have read both, enjoyed them. The Stolen Throne definitely comes off as first novel though. I really don't think it ruins anything, if anything in enhances the enjoyment. The Calling especially really makes you appreciate the huge sacrifice Grey Wardens make.

Read Stolen Throne. It was really great and actually changed my mind. My first character will now be a dwarf noble.

I'm reading The Calling right now and to me it adds to the game because it gives background on present events, being a resident of the world your character should be familiar with some parts of it, I guess it's cool to find things out as you play too but I like recognizing certain places because I've read about them before.

I don't think the books give the juicier parts away from the main plot but just serve as an introduction. I get the feeling that nothing in Thedas is exactly what it seems and Maric actually brings that up early on in the second book...

I agree...I am reading The Calling (just started) and I think it will add background and context for the game. This, in turn, will lead to a more meaningful story in which I can play. I think it would be fine not to read them as well.

I really enjoyed The Stolen Throne and plan on reading The Calling before long. It is a great way to fill in the backstory of the game and gain exposure to the lore of the setting.

Already read The Stolen Throne and 'am halfway through The Calling. I think it enhances your first playthrough, if anything.

haven't read, but since they are prequels and all, probably they will make the immersion in the game better, since it will be exciting to be in the world the books took place, and interact with some of their characters (of course I'm assuming the person enjoyed the book)

I read The Stolen Throne some time ago and liked it a lot. The Calling is waiting on my desk, but I need to finish another novel first. I will definitely read it before the game comes out, though.

While I was excited about the game before reading the first novel, it made the world and the characters much more vivid in my mind. So yeah, I think they will definitely add to the enjoyment when playing the game.

I read the Stolen Throne and I'm about half way through The Calling. IMO, it adds to my enjoyment, because it gives me more background about what's going on, and gives me a feel for the setting and such.

Ordered and read the International versions. Hard to say whether it would be wise to read them before playing the game. They don't spoil too much and certainly are enjoyable, but they might influence your opinion on certain characters that "you" - speaking of your character - haven't encountered yet. Seeing the Promo-Vids alone i had probably killed Loghain without a second thought. Now it ain't that easy...kinda like the guy, tbh

It's true that learning more about the setting and backstory may add to the experience with the game itself, but I haven't read the books and am not really interested either. Fiction rarely grabs me these days, and I'm very picky about what sort of characters I do and do not like. Given what people have written about TST, I suspect I'd really get annoyed with its protagonists.

I am reading the summaries and opinions and other book-spoiler-thread thougj, to glean the lore and all.

I was actually very surprised to read some of the character assessments people made about TST. The characterisation was the most impressive part of the story to me personally, and I think David Gaider did an absolutely fantastic job. This is one of the reasons why I'm so eager to play the game: if the NPCs in DA:O are nearly as interesting as the characters in TST, I'll be crying tears of joy, figuratively speaking. Or maybe literally, even :)

I've actually never been a fan of fantasy novels... I love fantasy games, tabletop and video.. but the lore is something I have to learn in game which actually is probably why I like the games so much. I'm thrown into a universe I know nothing about and everything is kind of a discovery.

I'll probably get them both eventually... I mean, I love David's writing! I don't know if I'll be able to get them before the game ships, though.
