I recently got Mass Effect 2. I installed the game, and when I clicked play, I got the following two error messages:

The instruction at "0x7c90100b" referenced memory at "0x04d27c50". The memory could not be "read".
The instruction at "0x00e0511a" referenced memory at "0x04d27cd8". The memory could not be "read".

I am not sure what is wrong, but if someone could let me know it would be appreciated. I am using Windows XP, and I have 1.00 gb of RAM. If you need any other information let me know.

Do the other system specifications meet the minimum requirements?

OS = Windows XP SP3 / Windows Vista SP1 / Windows 7

Processor = 1.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or equivalent AMD CPU

Memory = 1 GB RAM for Windows XP / 2 GB RAM for Windows Vista and Windows 7

Hard Drive = 15 GB

Sound Card = DirectX 9.0c compatible

Direct X = DirectX 9.0c August 2008 (included)

Video Card = 256 MB (with Pixel Shader 3.0 support). Supported Chipsets: NVIDIA GeForce 6800 or greater; ATI Radeon X1600 Pro or greater. Please note that NVIDIA GeForce 7300, 8100, 8200, 8300, 8400, and 9300; ATI Radeon HD3200, and HD4350 are below minimum system requirements. Updates to your video and sound card drivers may be required. Intel and S3 video cards are not officially supported in Mass Effect 2.

Please note: If you have an older integrated graphics card then it is using part of your system memory as video memory (ATI calls this 'Hyper Memory'). This would mean that instead of 1.00GB of RAM you would have 1.00GB - Video Memory Size [typically 128MB to 256MB].

In that situation you would not have enough base memory for the game to run.

That what I was thinking too. If your video card does not have enough separate memory,you'll have to get either another RAM module (cheap) or a different graphics card. WinXP should be able to handle 3GB. Above that, it can't use it, but should still run stably :-)

Os = Windows XP SP3

Processor = x86 Family 6 Model 23 Stepping 6 GenuineIntel ~1996 Mhz

Memory = 1 gb RAM

Hard Drive = Total Physical Memory - 2,048.00 MB

Available Physical Memory - 1.19 GB

Total Virtual Memory - 2.00 GB

Available Virtual Memory - 1.96 GB

*Are you sure 15 GB is required? This is with Mass Effect 2 and other games installed.

Sound Card = yes, it is DirectX 9.0c compatable

DirectX = yes

Video Card = i can\\t find it, but games such as Battlefield 2 work so I would imagine that it is okay.

Do you know of any other reasons for this?

This site might be able to tell you more cyri.systemrequirementslab.com/CYRI/intro.aspx
select Mass Effect 2 from the dropdown list and click allow when asked to.

about the 15GB HDD space: I got it down to 12 by deleting files for languages I did't need. But 15 is definitely needed during install.

Thanks for replying, I went to that website and it says it is the video card that is the problem. I am posting what it says because I need an upgrade, but my video card meets the requirements of the game. I am guessing that there is a more advanced issue that the website doesn't show. If I was to buy a new video card, which one would you recommend?

You Have: Mobile Intel® 4 Series Express Chipset Family

Required You Have

Video RAM 256 MB 1.0 GB

Hardware T&L Yes Yes

Pixel Shader version 3.0 3.0

Vertex Shader version 3.0 3.0

Intel and S3 video cards are not officially supported in Mass Effect 2.

If it doesn't work, get a real videocard (anything is better than Intel videochips!), if you have a laptop, you're screwed.

Also, System Requirements Lab is bad for especially that situation. It does only a few checks to see if a game will run. That's why it makes a lot of errors, especially with Intel videochips.

Battlefield 2 is some years old and has a lot lower requirements.

With that video card I am guessing you are on a Laptop - you are SoL in that case. You cannot upgrade your laptop video card. That particular card chipset series is meant for more mediocre usage like business apps, web surfing, etc.

An ATi Radeon HD4650 with 512MB dedicated and another 512MB shared RAM does the job well :-)

One possible solution would be to upgrade your laptop RAM, maybe then the mobile video card gets enough shared RAM. Not sure though, whether that solves your problem, sorry.

Thanks everyone,

I was using my brother's laptop to try and run the game since my computer is too old. I also could not upgrade the computer because my brother is only borrowing it. I am going to get a new one that can actually run newer games. Thank you all for your help, especially Bravenu3.
