I found the sentinel very strong in the early game if you go straight for assault armor with 1 point in overload and 1 in defender. Once you have assault armor, max out defender and get the tempest SMG. From there you get area overload, then build however you want.

Yeah, I think I should have gone Overload since almost all enemy types use shields early game aside from the few Vorcha/Krogan.  Got a point in it for Jack's mission and it helped.  I should be good by Horizon.

I have just finished an insanity run with my assault sentinel. I went a little different from the norm and had a blast with it. It may not be the most efficient build. In fact some may just seem confused with it but it fits what I think of Commander Shepherd...
The Build

Throw: 6
Warp: 1
Assault Armor 10
Area Overload 10
Cryo Blast: 3
Guardian: 10
Tungsten Ammo: 10

Weapon choice: Assault Rifle

The reasoning and play style

I know that a lot of people are going to look at this and say...only 1 point in warp??? ..FAIL!!!... and what about 3 points in Cryo?? are you stupid?...hear me out first

First with Warp... 1 point to me is all you need.  I took Tungsten Ammo as I found I was stripping off armor faster with the tempest or vindicator. I took 1 point mainly for the stop to health regain. I don’t care too much about warp explosions as I did that the whole way through with an adept...not that it isn’t a bad strategy....I just didn’t want to worry about it anymore.

3 in Cryo...Well honestly I had points left over and thought I would put them here. I know that this skill is a 1 point or all...but hey an added second to freeze isn’t bad at all...plus you can fire and forget and let the squad take care if you want to.

I use Overload more for the CC as it stops the guys from firing at me and the squad for 6 seconds.  Hence the area overload for possibility to hit more people.

I use Throw and Cryo the most and have them hotkeyed  Being on very short cooldowns this keeps the tech armor up when needed. I usually use throw for the little guys and cryo for the heavy hitters or guys closer to me.

I am usually up and close and running around the battlefield to utilize assault armor to its fullest but still staying behind cover (just cover that is a lot closer to the action hence why I took the assault rifle...

I have tried both the assault rifle and the shotgun and like the AR more. I know that the scimitar and the Eviscerator are great shotguns, but I find it more efficient using the vindicator at long-mid range to get those defenses down or take out key targets from range. When rushing to use the tech armor explosion I find the tempest more than enough to get them to redbar for using cryo or throw  then smack them a couple times or shred them with the tempest. I didnt pick the viper because this kind of puts you at a longer range for most of the fight and you won’t be using your tech armor for what it was designed for.

I know this might not work for some but I recommend trying it out....it makes for a fun playthrough

Have a video coming soon with my Sentinel vs. the Collector Ship Platforms. The first half is with the Assault Rifle and then I did with the Shotgun. Both clocked in at about 2 minutes a piece.

The Tempest is better than the Avenger, even at long range. Its on par with a Katana at point-blank as well.

So, why not use the Vindicator and Eviscerator?
There's also less than a 25% difference between the Katana and the other shotguns, while the difference between a Vindicator and an Avenger is almost double.

I always run out of bullets...

That and I just like how the Avenger feels.  I have a save right where you pick so I may go back and try it...

It really doesn't make that much of a difference. Especially since your playing a Sentinel.
While Vindicator has supposedly the better DPS when trigger spammed, that's hard to do in a fire fight and close range fights will end quick enough that you'll always see the fights end in a matter of seconds anyway.

Hmmm, well I'm trying to play with the Sentinel on Insanity again. While my first run was with more of a "Commander" based build, my second one is more oreinted towards a "commando" strategy. Finding iot much more difficult, anyone got some tips?

If your low level get Reave. I think a lot of people make the mistake of getting an ammo power to balance the Sentinels weaknesses but there is nothing better than Incendiary Squad Ammo. My reasoning for this is you have a harder time killing when your shield is popped off so you need to stun people while you wait for your shields. This allows you to stay on the offensive for longer.

Why Reave? you need to put points into a your passive, tech armor and warp/reave right away. I'd never want to be without any of those bars filled. Anyways, that's just my take.

Energy Drain also works wonders since it reafills your Tech Shields.

I was using Reave for awhile, but I just never found an opportunity to use it, I just felt that I might as well use Warp.

Eh, but i'm talking about low level, your going to be filled up your tech armor fast, so getting overload isn't that rough. putting 3 points into throw can be a pain when you can get reave immediately.

If you got your passive, tech armor and a warp/reave bar filled the only other explanation to why your game is harder is:

1. Your playing a NG+ which is always harder
2. Your lacking upgrades, I advise to immediately go to the citadel first and buy what you can at the start of the game.
3. Your unused to the playstyle. You want to get as close as you can but not to rush.

Yeah, it's because of unlocking powers that the Sentinel tends to suffer early on.

It's the third, I think I've been mistaking my Sentinel for the Vanguard he isn't, using more cover and the like to close the distance, but then I just feel like I'm falling back into the commander play style all over.

Do you know of any good videos that showcase the Commando style of Sentinel play?

I've got some coming soon.  You want to see AR, Sniper, or Shotty Sentinel?

It's been a while since I last played with my sentinel.

.

I finished the game twice with this class, one with a shotgun, and another one with a AR (Vindicator), and I can say the AR fitted much better my needs.

.

The sentinel is a amzing class.

Try and get into the rhythm and timing of knocking off enemy protection before assault armor explodes. You generally want as many enemies thrown on the floor as possible, rather than staggered.

So Rumination, I just did it with the Vindicator and the Evi and will upload it if you want, but it's about the same. Also, it took me a bit longer with the Vindicator because I think my aim is just bad.

Not my vid, but I find it very inspirational:

- thisisme8, which build do you think is best:

10 heavy throw

10 heavy warp

10 assault armor

3 overload

1 cryo blast

10 guardian

6 energy drain

or

10 heavy throw

10 heavy warp

10 assault armor

10 area overload

1 cryo blast

10 guardian

Honestly, I've been toying with the following build to much success:

3 Throw
3 Warp
4 Assault Armor
2 Overload
4 Area Cryo (Heavy?)
4 Defender
3 Energy Drain

Use Energy Drain Exclusively against shielded enemies to keep your Tech Armor up. Very aggressive play to keep enemies stunned/knocked down, lots of Cryo + Shotty. Throw frozen targets that aren't in range or enemies that you can knock off ledges. Weapons plus lvl 3 of Energy Drain and Warp is all you'll need to strip defense.

Edit:  Any weapon can used instead of the Shotty.  Also:

ME2 - Sentinel Avenger vs. Katana Collector Platforms
ME2 - Sentinel Vindicator vs. Evi Collector Platforms

Put the Vindicator vs. Evi up just a bit ago.  Will be processed in 720p shortly.  I still like the Avenger more than the Vindicator.

Got a new video up.

It starts with a simple demonstration of Energy Drain vs. a few enemies, but it quickly moves on to a Strontium Mule run.  Anyway, the moral of the story is that Power Armor + Energy Drain vs. Blue Suns is a joke.

So thats why Im giving them some chances and dont take Energy Drain. Instead, they've got a taste of my ammo piercing rounds.

Btw I started another playthrough on insanity (not ng+) and I own w/o problems, even though Im still on level, hm, 10 or 11
