I'm perfectly okay with the direction taken with ME2, hell it is obvious the series were intended as in ME2 gameplay-wise in the first place. Before ME1 was released, the devs were all talking about a squad-based tactical shooter combat but didn't come up quite as expected and... "developped". The ME2 gameplay is much more dynamic and tactical, the encounter being a lot more realistic as you can't take as much bullets as the enemies. Though I agree you could use a little more weapons and armor parts. But something that people don't seem the understand with ME2, is that it has little... flaws in design. By that I mean that everything is perfectly functionnal and well made. Planet scanning while relatively boring works, the equip screen and every gameplay elements are well made and complete as opposed to, say, ME1's equip screen (there were NO inventory neither loot, only weapons, as in equip screen, that magically appeared in your hands) which was poorly deisgned even if it didn't necessarily bothered you or that you prefer it over the ME2 system. And that's the whole point, saying: "you guys can't accept ME2 has flaws" is clueless as it's all about personal opinion. It's like saying you guys can't accept there is a god, it's all about what we think. Sure there's always technical flaws, but beyond that, it's a matter of opinion if you prefer a flawed system over a perfectly functionnal system.

But if there's something that bothered me, is the lack of conversations with your squad mates as well as the LI being very shallow and uninteresting. After learning a little more about the person you're (both) instantly in love. Also, I think there could be one more civilized planet to walk on and have quests as well as bigger planets (Omega is rather small as well as the Afterlife being a little small and awkward) and a little more quests. Really, I find those problems a lot more important than the gameplay problems (even if I think everything is perfectly fine). I mean, I play ME principally for the story and universe.

Saying ME's being dubbed down isn't very intelligent either. You know there is a difference between changing for a simpler system and dubbing down (for the sake of selling maybe). Dumbing down means that it's less well made, the ME2 system isn't a dubbed down ME1 one since it's more functional, but it being simpler doesn't mean it's a drop in quality.

I just feel like Mass Effect 2 is a weaker RPG then Mass Effect. It feels like much more of an action game, and the new game seems to have a terrible time with keeping it's own internal lore straight.

For example, here's one that stares us straight in the face all the time, Thermal Clips.

The explanation is that they are supposed to drain heat away from the weapon so they can be fired continuously. However, in reality they work like ammunition clips, and the overheating system seems to have gone away.

Image IPB

You aren't being serious are you? Like, it isn't obvious its an ammo clip? They just wanted to balance the ridiculous overheating system of guns in ME. I mean I once taped the trigger down just to see how long it would take to overheat my gun, 2hrs later it was still going.

Of course that is after you equipped the X interation of gun mods onto an end game rifle. Forbid that your character is in end game equipment should be able to escape from the same confines of being a starter.

The ammo clip/thermal clip is only there to balance and increase the combat mechanics of the cover system creates.
An implementation need.

I wasn't disappointed by ME2. But I did have some small issues with a few aspects of the game. Namely the lack of weapons and N7 armor pieces. I also was hoping for some class specific gear that improved on the strengths of those classes and I am kinda irked at the fact that there is no "unique" weapons in the pistol and submachinegun categories... that felt like a b****slap aimed at Adepts, Sentinels, and Engineers. The Soldiers, Vanguards, and Infiltrators were already strong base classes but are at this point the only classes that can have "unique" weapons unless you mod the game... which is an obvious class balance issue.

Yes, but it doesn't make sense in the game! I mean, what rational explination would they have for doing such a thing "in universe"? Besides, the overheat system worked very well as far as I'm concerned.

I guess the clip issue is just a constnat reminder that Mass Effect 2 isn't so much of an RPG as it is a Shooter, and I loved Mass Effect for it's RPG elements. For me, it turned the game from an Amazing RPG into a Sub-par shooter with a good story.

That's a valid complaint isn't it? I'm not saying that the game is terrible, I'm just saying that I feel very bait and switched with this series.

Since the last few postings dealt with weapons, armor and thermal clips…

-Armour. In ME2 I didn’t like the “little” researchable upgrades as compared to the upgrades you could use in ME1. The old upgrades felt more like upgrades since they didn’t require a armor part change like they do in ME2. Aldo on this I liked having a wide variety of different looking armor types. Now we get a basic one with some color choices. The downloadable armor (at least the Cerberus one) has no options at all for color customization or hiding the helmet.

-Weapons. Same story as above. In ME2 it seems the entire galaxy uses the same weapons and only one of two varieties of them. I would have preferred some variety and not expect every companion I recruit to have same gun I do.

-Thermal Clips. One of my biggest issues with ME2. Last I checked I didn’t recall seeing any Geth in ME1 use a thermal clip system did you? Screwing up the basic lore of a game like this was just in bad taste and it wasn’t even implemented in the game that well, even with the best intents. Thermal clips should have been (in my opinion) a researchable upgrade, one that extended your firing duration before overheating not some half thought of ammo system. Yes, its nothing than an ammo system if you pay attention to the number of shots you get per clip. Heavy pistols in ME2 have the same number of shots before reloading as any other shooter game. The same thing goes for all the weapons. As for story loopholes there are a few like how a shipwreck castaway group has thermal clips laying about when they have been on that planet for 10 years. Or why would the Collectors “drop” them are their weapons based on Geth technology? I just wish BioWare had come up with a better in the middle of the road solution.

ME2 Playthrough 1; Not disappointed but not overwhelmed

ME2 Playthrough 2; Enjoyed it but annoyed about how easily I mucked some things up.

ME2 Playthrough 3; Yay, the one I'm on now.

I agree with you.
The explanation for it in game was very weak. Alliance decided to copy the Geth by retrofitting all in service weapons with thermoclips. Yet that only explains Alliance and Geth weapons; excluding weapons in the Terminus systems, pirates, and others that may have not gotten the memo that the Geth made weapons perform better.

From the looks of the game, I just wished Dialogue could've improved a bit more, for example, Garrus loves to calibrate the guns 24/7 apparently :P

And post endgame, once you finish playing everything, the galaxy is pretty much boring AND dead, there wasn't incentive for my friend (who owns it), or for me(who was observing), to continue playing/observing it anymore.

In all honesty I do find Mass Effect 2 to be somewhat of a disappointment.

I've played through the original game well over 20 times, listening to each conversation in full as if it were the first time I heard it. However after just two plays on the second game I'm struggling to find the enthusiasm to play through again and I find myself hitting X to skip dialogue, something I never do in the first game.

The story just feels completely disjointed and halfway through I forgot the Collectors were even part of the game. They just weren't the ever present threat that Saren and the Geth were in the first game.

In regard to thermal clips, there is an upgrade for the shotgun which gives extra rounds. I'll just quote the end part 'Allows for smaller, easier-to-carry heat sinks.' If my shotguns now use smaller heat sinks, why am I still able to put the larger ones I pick up in the battlefield into them?

Here's my though'ts on the matter, and I really hope that someone makes a mod that works like this.

I think that they should work as they're described instead of how they work in the game. Thermal Clips could allow for extended firing of your weapon provided that you kept switching out clips, and you could be set an option to automatically switch clips on some weapons, but without the clips (or switching disabled) you'd be back to the old Overheat system for that weapon.

I feel like that's a much better system, and it turns them into the upgrade they're described to be instead of an odd limitation.

I thought the game rocked except they completely destroyed that 1980's Bladerunner-like atmosphere that made the original game so good. How could they do that to us? How could they remove those basic sci-fi elements? Mass Effect 2, like I said, was an awesome game. Better than the original in nearly every way. But the atmosphere was completely forgotten.

I like the idea but to keep in following of the point of ammo they would need to heat up faster and cooldown a lot slower - so overheating is actually a problem, espeically in the middle of a firefight.

Well that would make sense also. I mean, if weapons were designed to use the thermal clips, then they likely would heat up faster than weapons that were not.

-Agreed on the point of playing after you beat the game seems pointless. There just isn’t enough side quest to do in the first place let alone to keep playing. Hopefully in future downloads, BioWare will add some serious expansion packs that will fill in the lacking side quests aspect of the game. Unfortunately will it matter anymore? Its not likely that I will reload a old ME2 game just to explore some added stuff that was added in September. True, this isn’t like The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion where there are a ton of side quests you can do before and after you beat the main quest but it would have been nice if they put some effort in more side quests to do.

Bro the problem is that WE ARE IN A GALAXY!!! So, ok, when we finish the main quest and the secondary quests, the galaxy... is the galaxy dead? LOL! Ok, no more ghets, no more space pirates... i'm speaking about let respawn some random enconunters (anomalies?). This can be fun... and realistic too.

-Unfortunately the galaxy was dead before you even start the game in context to the number of side quests you can do. Lol! Scan 6 systems get maybe 1 “anomaly” N7 quest. Oh so much fun.

There are only 13 N7 quests while in ME1 there were 34 UNC quests. Also consider that quite a few of the N7 quest took less than 5 minutes to do.That’s a big difference between games. Every system had a planet that had a quest on it in ME1. In ME2 you have so many star systems with planets in them that have absolutely no use. So much wasted space for nothing.

That would nice to see, respawning enemies after you beat the game. Maybe even open up the locked out zones that you cant go back into again. Even if you ht the level cap it would at least give you something to do besides scan for minerals you have no use for.

I think the game just needs more overall side quests to keep players remotely interested in replaying the game quest wise. Almost every mission has the same set up; you get there to start, you kill everything, the mission ends and if your very lucky enough when it ends you can still look around. In ME1 there were several missions where the outcome didn’t always end in killing everyone.

By the way ME2 has plenty of “cookie cutter” junk in it. Take a look around the levels and you’ll see plenty of reused things from satellite dishes, doors and other structures to reusing the enemies you fight. I mean how many do you fight with Blood Pack, Blue Suns and Eclipse merc groups? True it may not be exactly the same with ME1 having the same 2or 3 structures reused on most of the UNC quests. I would rather have seen several “cookie cutter” missions reusing some of the same structures than be completely bored to death with nothing to do.

Yes, while I absolutely love the game (in fact, may be addicted, really all I want to do now, star map music plays in my head while I'm walking around), I don't feel like they're rewarding me with enough side missions for my explorations. I mean, I'm in the Far Rim, and there's this system way way out called Ma-at. I don't even think you could reach it without a fuel upgrade. I go all the way out there for... one planet... that I can't land on or even do anything in orbit around. Really? Why even bother putting it there? I do hope they add to these places in DLC or in ME3.

The "cookie cutter" thing is inevitable when it comes to games, as you'll always have limited space. Of course, you could make the same argument about ME1, but the fact was that it was much more noticeable then. Literally every mission drew from one of 5 layouts. ME1 tried to do way too much, and that resulted in a fall in quality in what was there. ME2 is much more focused, and what reuse of structures there was, I did not notice it. Reuse of assets is tolerable, but reuse of mission design is unacceptable. I don't see how your infatuation with quantity over quality will benefit the game in any way. I'd much rather play a good focused game than one that tries to do a lot and ends up failing at all of them because of it.

Reused maps are fine when they make sense. Most of the reused maps are things like cargo ships or colony landing pods. It makes perfect sense to me that those things would be standardized, and they did a pretty good job of changing the internal decor and obstacle maps of crates and such to break things up a bit. *shrug* I didn't have a problem with it. A mass colonization effort is a hell of a lot cheaper when you go with a standardized pod design, rather than custom building every one.

Story:

Good - Fantastic writing, as usual. Appreciate the increased comedy!

Bad - I saw the interview...great eyes...good work...now...you need better Facial Expressions and more natural Gestures. A lot of times, I find that using standard gestures removes part of the feel for the scene. It's a glaringly obvious (lazy) shortcut. Much better than ME2, but, don't doit for me, do it for your writers. It's like fantastic scripts with sub-par acting, could be better.

Combat -

Good - Feels more like a shooter. Felt the importance of team-mates as well (ME1, Spectre Gear X + Predator H + X mods= run/spray/ownage lol) . Barrier/Shield/Armour system adds an interesting dimension to combat. No more sniping turrets with rifles lol!

Bad - No direct weapon shortcuts. Small issue and probably only for Soldier (ie. Snipe - switch assault - krogan incoming - command HUD to switch to shotgun) but yea it was in ME1 would be nice to have in ME2.

hmm...that's it for now.

But one thing: has anyone noticed how Shiala looks much better in ME1 than in ME2? She sorta became more bookish...like Liara. Prefered ME1 Shiala =\\

Disappointment? If anything, I was disappointed with the first game (having only played it a few weeks ago). After all the praise it got, I thought it was a bit overrated. It was a fun game no doubt, but I didn't think it was AMAZING. There were too many glitches, the environments were pretty bland, and most of the characters didn't have a personality aside from Ashley, Tali, and Wrex. Also, the whole upgrade thing was a mess.

The second game however, is easily one of my favorites of all time. I can't get enough of it. The graphics and environments are great, all the side missions are a lot of fun, the character cast is one of the best ever (they even injected some personality into Garrus) and the game is all around just an amazing experience. I guess I can't speak for everyone, but I for one love this game.
