This is about the Soundtrack for ME2.  If you haven't spent time paying attention to the soundtrack then please, refrain from responding.

My question is how many of you found that the most powerful tracks were the ones with the least techno sounds?  I feel that Normandy Reborn, Jump Drive and everything after it except the last two tracks were the most powerful, and they had the most Horns and strings and the least techno.  I kind of thought the techno stuff ruined many of the tracks, it kind of invalidated the emotions you were meant to be feeling.  I'm not bashing techno, it has it's uses, I just thought the soundtrack could have done without them.

The Afterlife music was perfect, I know that much. Upper floor, that is. I disagree with you, in other words. Entirely.

No, like I said, it has it's uses, Afterlife, perfect place for techno, I agree. Everywhere else, not so much.

To elaborate, I find it suits the high-tech galaxy very well. Science fiction is, generally speaking, no place for the cliché, epic songs of high fantasy. In certain scenes, yes, but not as a backdrop for ordinary encounters. The opposite of what you're suggesting, I guess.

I thought the music in the first game was better. But I wouldn't call that techno. I personally prefered the dark synth music accompanying the collectors and the various remixes regarding that. Favorite in the game however was the remixed version of the Thane recruitment music that was in Zaeed's loyalty mission. To me the orchestrated music veered to much towards Halo for my liking.

The techno aspects have a kind of cool retro feel. Everything kind of feels like modernized 50s science fiction. Jack Wall is a real badass. Tali's theme especially tears me up in the combat section.

I feel that BW did a great job with the soundtrack in both games and techno does fit most science fiction themed games very well but still some of the pre-release trailers did have some music that differed from the typical ME beat and came across very nice.

The E3 trailer, not techno I think but more of a rock flavored rythm

The launch trailer, two steps from hell, much more epic

*Edit: heh, I was watching the launch trailer as ME2 was first installing on my computer - got me SO PUMPED!

Oh ffs.

Electronic is not "techno."

And no, I'm of the opinion that they need to go back to more ambient electronic and synthesized soundscapes for ME3. Brass and strings certainly have their place, but they're not all there is.

I think ME2 Bioware really brought it's new A game to the scoring. I think mixing the orchestral and electronic sounds came out very well for them - orchestral tracks should generally be reserved for your big action set pieces, sort of "history in the making" areas whereas the pieces using synth sounds worked very well. A great example where they do this in Freedom's Progress - the transition from the ambient to combat music.

For example Tali's character track is probably one of the best ones in the game, competing with Suicide Mission. They both have very different approaches, but they both work and they both fit the places they're used.

classic Rock would go so much better. Both Hard and soft and everything in between.

Techno is okay for the clubs, but for actual emotive music it's just nonsense noise. "Doof doof doof".

I couldn't have said it better. The Suicide Mission and Tali tracks are my two favorite as well.

I don't really think you could have only one or the other and I'm sure they will continue to blend both types together for the next game.

To the OP, what your talking about would be refered to as electronic/synth. Techno is simply a type of electronic (dance) music.

I worked for eleven hours at a Techno-ridden festival behind a bar. It is nothing but noise. There's no inflections, no emotion. It's just a beat.

It's essentially a drummer on a synthesiser.

I agree, classic rock would fit better.  And, to clarify, I meant synthesized, not techno, I just couldn't think of the word.

Best Tracks: The End Run, Crash Landing, Samara

Worst Track: NEW FREAKING WORLDS

Honestly, SimCity had better 'elevator' music. If I'm going to be stuck here firing probes for half an hour, I want some interesting music.

This thread has inspired me to listen to the soundtrack again as well. It is truly amazing. I'd have to say that even though I have favorite tracks, they all work - my favorites are the ones which work best if you hear them outside the context of the game. In the game...they're all excellent.

I especially liked: The Lazarus Project, Normandy Reborn, The End Run, Crash Landing, Samara and Suicide Mission.

I like techno, but I don't think the tracks in ME2 went too much into the techno-genre.
