Has anyone esle noticed this?  All that expensively-puchased, highly evolved shielding that worked so well on Veteran turns to damp tissue on the hardest level of difficulty.

I've heard people say that Heavy Fortification, Geth Shielding, etc. come in handy in a pinch, but I find that on Veteran "a pinch" genrally means you should be bracing yourself to eat a poo poo sandwich no matter how much shields/health you have.  The only effective protection on Insanity is cover and maximized DPS,

Once I had revamped my soldier Shep to inflict maximum damage at the expense of any concessions to health, my Insanity fortunes imporved dramatically and I died only a handful of times in the latter of the game.  What initally seemed nightmarish becomes downright doable, especially for those of us with an affinity for the headshot.

In ME1, tanking soldiers were not only viable but virtually invulnerable.  Judicious use of Inmmunity could even allow you to take down a Thresher Maw on foot.  Not so now.  I guess Bioware deserves credit for nerfing the overpowered soldier, 'cause the only semi-viable tank these days is a boy called Grunt.

Offense FTW!

Cover is the ultimate tank.

Shielding bonuses on insanity are a waste of space. They bring your shields from "cracks in a stiff breeze" all the way up to "might stop one shot."

Hardened adrenaline rush is the closest this game has to immunity. I always fire it off when I'm flanked and have to run for it (albeit in slomo).

I had initally gone with Hardened, but wound up switching to Heightened for Insanity.  For a headshot-loving Widow soldier, it just seemed to be the way to go.  The one instance in which I can really see Hardened being superior is when Harbinger Drones get close enough to dislodge you from cover.

Shields aren't that weak on Insanity, but yeah, geth shield boost, fortification, and barrier really aren't all that hot on insanity unless you are a class that isn't an infiltrator, soldier, or vanguard who can get away easily enough (infiltrator's cloak, soldier's hardened adrenaline rush, and charge on vanguards).

Two problems

Soldiers don't tank in mass effect 2. If there is a class that can tank in Insanity, its a very situation late game assault sentinel. and he has to hide behind cover too.

Soldier don't use shields. that 50% damage protection from adrenline rush only applies to health bars.

i am always surprised when people aren't satisfied with fortification. its only supposed to buy you pop-out time, and thats exactly what it does. you get the timing down right and you never have to recast it and it allows you to engage in the fire fight longer. i personally use it over the adrenaline rush because i don't really like that skill. i find it very boring.

For those who've used Sentinels on Insanity, how viable is the Tech Armor?

It is good on its own because it has some crazy reach, stun and decent damage, but you must wait behind cover if your cooling down. Secondly, you need alot of gear, the Hard Shield upgrade and spam the "Heavy Barrier" talent combined with it to "tank".

I think the classes are all pretty balanced, some classes just require more patience or strategy than others.

Defensive skills for most classes (except the Sentinel and possibly the Vangaurd) are worthless on insanity. The wont hold up long enough to make them worthwhile, and they tie up your global cooldown from using other more crucial abilities.

Sentinel can benefit slightly from the layered defense still, and it can serve as a "panic button" for a Vangaurd that charges in and gets in over their head, buying a couple extra seconds to get to cover...but even both of those would be better off putting their points elsewhere.

Taking a defensive ability as a soldier on insanity is particularly silly. IN essence it buys the same couple seconds Hardened Adrenaline Rush buys you, but on a longer cooldown , and without the handly all purpose time dilation. And if you dont want to use adrenaline rush, why play a soldier?
