me an my brother got dragon age origins 2 days ago, i know this has prob been asked a few gazillion times but . . . are they gonna let them be a new race ? i think they should like you were part of the group thet went with "sten" to ferelden ya know an i guess you could only be male even though they have both sexes but ive been thinking that men can be warriors or if they make new melee classes  one of them (i just dont see a Qunari as a mage, plus i think he said the wemon dont fight, or most are mages) . . but dont quote me on that lol, an the mages get their tounge cut out if so maybe you can be one of the renagade qunari . . . i forget what their called . . .havent play all the way, an that could be your start an like your a merc an like somthing happens boom pow duncan pops up like a magical god of justice ya know lol but i really think the Qunari should be but in the game with like High Str, low to med dex, high will (being qunari you notice their HUGE an have prob alot of str an endurance) low magic an high to med con, i think they will give people that love melee classes somthing new to poke around with instead of humans/dwarfs which in my opinion make uber fighters! plz tell your opinion on if Qunari should be a race or how they would start i say yes, an they could either be part of the group that started with sten but you survived just saved by duncan or your a merc that once agian either joins duncan  or is saved by lol or my last your one of the rebel qunari that came to ferelden   for much of the same reason sten did or you were in a fight an . . . i dont know ducan poofs to you like magic an sprinkles magic dust on you an makes you join him . . . im just saying lol well plz plz plz comment

The Qunari are -very- religious and have a religion devoted to the expansion of their empire, and an empire devoted to the expansion of their religion. Qunari mercenaries are the dregs of Qunari society, and, considering how easily they're dispatched, are the children that would have been left out in the forest for their frailty. If you want to be a frail, money-grubbing, and uneducated Qunari soldier... Alright.

If you are a mercanary you are no longer a Qunari as far as they are concerned. In fact you are blacklisted as a sort of kill on sight renegade by other Qunari.



Also Duncan died, axe to face or chopping off the head tends to do that.

You never actually SEE Duncan die.  You just assume it.  Granted his survival has the odds against him but occassionally you here talk that he didn't die.  That he's suppose to show up in another game.  Whether that holds true or not time will tell.

Admittedly I haven't read the books yet... but are Qunari actually a race? I mean, obviously there is a race of Qunari, but do they consider themselves a race, or a nation? Are other races that are absorbed into their world when they conquer (such as the elves of Seheron that were formerly Tevinter slaves) also considered Qunari?

Qunari are both a race and a nation. They are of a seperate stock than humans, elves and dwarves.



And yes, they do absorb others into the Qun as well. If you listen to one of Sten's banters with Zevran, Sten talks about how some elves are given positions of great authority within qunari society, provided they are capable. Hell, even in one of his banters with Shale he considers the possibility of allowing Shale to be allowed to be formally considered a part of society. According to their society, any species can join the Qun as long as they are capable of "achieving enlightenment" (i.e. they possess intelligence).



My impression of qunari society is that while it's extremely rigid and unyielding, it's also quite egalitarian and is about as close to a true meritocracy as we'll see in Thedas.

Think of qunari as jews. You're a qunari if you're of a certain race, and you're a qunari if you follow the qun.

Amd the the Jew comparison...pretty fail...try again. Jews IRL, not your make believe world, were quite nomadic, and not so much elite and deadly warriors on quests.

The qunari aren't elite and deadly warriors on a quest either. Sten, a single qunari, is.

The poster above me asked if a human or elf who adopted the qun would be a qunari. In the real world, a person can be ethnically Jewish or they could be someone who’s not ethnically Jewish, but practices Judaism. Both are Jews.

A qunari can be part of the qunari race or they can be a member of any race that happens to follow the qun. Both are qunari.

So, yes, being a qunari is like being jewish.

The comparison to Jews is apt, since just like the Jewish people, qunari can signify both an ethnic group (bronze-skinned, white-haired giants) and a follower of a particular religion.

Because of this, a Tal' Vashoth who does not subscribe to the Qun is qunari based on ethnicity (sort of like how Noam Chomsky is a Jew because of his ancestry, even though he's an atheist), and likewise, a human from a conquered land who has converted to the philosophy of the Qun is also a qunari, only in different ways. Makes perfect sense to me.

The Qunari are a seperate race/species. The darkspawn are proof.



Dwarf -> Genlock

Human -> Hurlock

Elves -> Shriek

Qunari -> Ogre



If the Qunari were human, their women would have produced Hurlocks when they become Broodmothers.

first off screw everyone that just came here to put petty insults up yes i am in middle school whoopee doo ! an you dispatch qunari mercs easy cause your a gray warden of pure kick assness im just saying that the qunari could be put in as another heavy hitter tank race why when some one post somthing that seems like a good idea every one mocks it ? that's bull you cant sit here an tell me that it doesnt sound like a kool idea, na yes i did overlook the fact that if they added them it would have to be later on after duncans death . . . but i think that it should of been before like you could of been in ostigar . . . but i d c . . . all people do is **** an complain about flaws in my post . . . your all off topic an qunari are a race cause look at the symbol for what race sten is . . . i know it may not mean much to a bunch of intellectuals like you all (lol thats a joke ) but it does to me since sten is my fav char in all of DAO ty an have a good one oh bty dont get off topic next time . . . i was asking if it could be possible not about how qunari are . . . jews ? lol

The qunari were originally supposed to be a fourth PC race in Origins, but were dropped for a number of reasons. It's possible they'll become such in DA 2. In Awakening, you only have the three races from Origins.

In addition, please use capitalization and punctuation in your posts. People complained because no one wants to slog through your posts; they’re hard to read.

Yes, true, and the term  for Jews is macroethnicity.
Since the Qunari all look VERY similar, they would be more a microethnicity.
Jews have migrated for so long that physically the similarities have been lessened and have adapted to social, and cultural constructs of their adopted lands.
Qunari have not adapted to any other culture in DA, but IRL a jew could be considered American, or Dutch, and cannot be physically determined to be a jew at all unless it is spoken of.
A Qunari looks like a Qunari.
So while I understand where you guys are going...the difference is micro and macro ethnicity.
Qunari being micro....jews being macro.
