So my female dwarf noble has been travelling around with Leliana, listening to her stories and giving her presents as she does with all her companions. After I completed her personal quest, she was on +100 Friendly and all was well. Then I talked to her and asked how she was doing after the whole Marjolaine business ... and she declared her love for me and switched to +100 Love. Whoops.

Apparently Leliana has misinterpreted my character's friendly concern and platonic gifts of flowers and cute animals as romantic overtures. I have no problem with the romance itself - I'm enjoying playing through it with my female city elf rogue - but this is so not where I wanted the relationship to go in this play through!

After her declaration she said that we would 'talk about this later' and now I'm afraid to click on her when we're in camp. If I tell her I'm not interested, I assume her heart will be broken and her approval will reset to zero. It's pretty late in the game and I don't think I have enough gifts/time to build it up again from there. On the other hand, if I leave her thinking that I return her feelings, she's going to be awfully upset when my Warden feeds herself to the Archdemon.

My poor dwarf noble - her situation is positively soap-operatic. First Gorim goes off and marries some surface dwarf, then Sten is programmed to never notice her even after she finds his sword (and buys him a Chasid Great Maul, which is clearly way better.) Now Leliana thinks she's in love and Wynne is telling her off for pursuing a relationship she's not remotely interested in!

If you break it off with her, she will disapprove about -15 but she won't reset. So if you end up wanting to break it off, it won't be such a big reduction.

If you don't break up with her, Morrigan is going to use her as a reason why you should go through with the ritual. I had the exact same thing happen to me on my noble (the Marjolaine conversation flipping her to love and Alistair going "well, not that two women aren't, like HOT, but still, wtf."

I don't think her approval will be set to zero if you break up with her, but save your game first and then break up with her. If the loss is too significant, you can revert back to the save. If it's not bad, just move on. I broke up with her and I lost about 15 points, IIRC.

Leliana: "Why did you say such things to me?!"
PC: "I only said hello."
Leliana: "But the Maker told me that if I did this stupid 'darkspawn killing' quest, I'd get you as a reward. Are your conversation files bugged? Here, let me check your love toggle..."
PC: "HANDS OFF THE LOVE TOGGLE."

Thank you for the advice - I thought the approval loss would be bigger because in a previous game when I told Zevran we needed to stop flirting, he went back to zero approval. Now that I think about it, though, his approval probably wasn't very high at the time.

At least I know now that my elf rogue won't have any trouble getting her into bed ...

 Ah, ninja love. One of the sneakier bard techniques that Leliana mastered.

Ahhhh... I remember the first time this happened...

I remembered her saying she liked shoes. So I thought, "Oh! Shoes! Lelianna likes shoes. Especially blue shoes with amber stones. Funny that I would loot exactly such a pair," and I passed it on to her.

Later...
Leliana: "I love how you watch over me when I sleep! It's like you're protecting me!"
Clueless Ranger: "Uh... okay."

A conversation later...
Leliana: "I've grown to really care for you... as more than just a friend."
Less-Then-Clueless Ranger: "Um... I only like you as a friend. lets keep it that way."
Leliana: "Ah! Yes! Just... friends. Yes, I understand. *mopey face*"

Oh, okay, cool. She took the hint.

Leliana: "What is this I hear about you and Zevran!? I thought you said he meant nothing to you!?"
Pissed Ranger: "Okay, no, I never said that, I said I wanted to be friends you nutty carrot-top, now leave me be, Zevran is my lover, for God's sake."

Leliana Disaproves -15

Oh yeah. They gave the Easy Lover achievement to Zevran but Leliana was already head over heals for my Warden before Zevran even joined up. Whenever she gets all... interested.. just back up slowly and make up an awkward conversation with Wynne to create a diversion. Works like a charm..

LOL. I turn on the Zevran romance a lot by accident because he's the only character that actually requires approval building to avoid being attacked later. My conversations go like this: ESC. ESC. ESC. (Pick bottom dialogue option.) ESC. ESC. ESC. (Pick bottom dialogue option.) ESC. ESC. ESC.

I mean, I do have characters that romance Zevran, but on the playthroughs where he's not an option, he sure is a lot of work for someone who just stays in camp along with Alistair and Leliana! ;)

It's fairly easy to get into accidental romances with all the characters. In my sacrifice game, I was romancing Alistair and told him to go and marry the queen for the good of Fereldan while my Warden threw herself on the dragon. Some time in between the Landsmeet and the final battle, I must have said the wrong thing to Zevran and flipped hin to 100 love, so although we'd never kissed, let alone had sexy time in his tent, I got the ending with him going back to Antiva to run the Crows but never loving again. Grrr.

But yes, I've had to let my companions down gently in nearly every game, which is frustrating due to the approval hit.

In my last game it went something like this.

Morrigan: Let me get this straight. You're choosing a man over me?
Lorian Coulsand: Well duh. I'm gay, or didn't you notice?
Morrigan: But what about all the long chats by the fire, and the gifts?
Lorian Coulsand: I thought you were my bestest **** hag. You're funny and catty and you don't try to ram your religion down my throat like Leliana...
Morrigan: So I'm a **** hag to you?
Lorian Cousland: Well, yes.
*Morrigan disapproves*

It took two conversations, but I managed to get out of the relationship without any approval loss by telling her that I had to put my duty to the Grey Wardens first. She didn't take the hint when she declared her love and I told her we should just stay friends, and acted like I was breaking up with her when we had this conversation. At least we get to stay friends now.

It's probably just as well there wasn't a conversation option for "there is no 'us!' We only have a romance in your Maker-addled head, you crazy human!"

Loghain asked my male PC: 'What about Leliana?' when the latter volunteered to die. My PC should have been able to reply 'What about her?' 'cos apparently Loghain knows my warden's love-life better than he himself does. Someone had apparently been reading 'The Rose of Orlais' secretly in his tent at night. The maps are just a cover - to keep him happy, keep Loghain supplied with Orlaisian romantic fiction.

Doing a pretty frustrating playthrough with my female Human noble atm. I wanted to romance Alistair and see if it was possible to become queen when you make him king, he gave me the rose and we talked about him being a virgin (I asume that's a part of the romance plot) but out of nowhere Leliana becomes my "romance" and I can't seem to break up with her, only make her leave, but that doesnt get Alistair interested again, his approval is 100 while Leliana is only on 50-something.

Is there any way to save this?

If you're playing as a female, all you have to do is be nice to her and she'll fall in love with you. Even if you choose the "we're friends" dialogue at every possible opportunity :D

That's Leliana...

Wow, I honestly never had this problem with Leliana. I turned the romance on accidentaly during my first playthrough, by telling her that "I hope I can become someone special [like Marjolane] to you" and let's be honest, with everything she said before, I should have known better. As long as I avoid this particular line and the convo about a "forbidden fruit" (which is flirty and rather obvious), I have no problems with keeping Leliana in a friend zone. I don't have to be mean to her or anything.

Frankly, I'm having more trouble with keeping Alistair or Zevran as friends, without having to turn them down at some point. As for Leliana, I'm seriously beginning to think that there are some glitches involved, either in my game or yours.

I feel for you. My PC experienced something along that line too. She broke off with Alistair (it was best for both, trust me), everything was going well with Zevran, heck, she even got chewed out by Wynne for hitching her lot to Zevran.

I wanted to click the storage chest in camp (it's a mod). Leliana stands quite close to it, so I accidentaly clicked on her instead. Suddenly I (and my flabbergasted PC) hear: "So, Zevran tells me you two are intimate." in a very heart-broken voice. My poor PC didn't know how to take that and what to do. Somehow she flipped from 95 friendly to 95 love. So my PC had to break up with her, and boy does she have a sad face. My PC felt like a heel, even though she was not to blame. It was utterly weird.

But you can't avoid doing it, it is like saying no to Dagna.

What's worse is that when you find out you are in a romantic relationship with Leliana because your love interest informs you of it. And there's no option to say WTF?!?!?!?! When did this happen? Your dialogue options are always I love you, are you jealous, no, it's just fun...none of which are adequate to explain the situation.

Click on Alistair, am hoping to ask if he wants his lampost licked, and I get something like this:

Uhh, can I ask something personal, like, whats up with you and leliana, are you guys ...you know.. WTF?

Wow. So I guess giving someone shoes and nugs in Orlais is a marriage proposal.

I think, however, at least in my last playthrough, have discovered the secret of keeping Leliana love-ninja free. I think that, in the convo you first have with her when her approval starts warming up, about your hair, after a few lines with her, say "right, let's talk more about my hair", and that seems to veer Leliana towards friend zone for good. I never picked this option before, because it was OOC for all my PCs, being a bit vain and self centered, but by golly, it works. Later on, after majorlaine, in that convo, do NOT ever ask if Marjoilaine was special, or anything like that.

I ended up, in this playthrough, of avoiding the ninja of love.

Nobody says 'no' to Dagna. It's impossible. She is the sweetest NPC ever. Not even a puppy-kicker can say 'no' to Dagna.

The forbidden fruit line doesn't help you romance Leliana. In fact, if you're a male PC, it loses you approval.

Wrong.
