Hello, I only recently registered on these forums, most of the time I just read what is posted. But one thing I keep encountering are posts from players who say that their normal playthrough took 70, 90, or 120 hours or that the 'average' game length if you try to complete everything is 60+ hours. Even this site, http://videogameleng...es-for-ps3.html says that the game length is 55 to 60 hours.

However, having done two playthroughs so far I don't see how that is possible. My good character on normal as a 2h warrior did mostly everything but missed a few collective/blackstone quests, taking a total of 50 hours.

My second playthrough, as an evil blood/AW mage taking me 43-44 hours, much shorter since I knew where mostly everything was and was more familiar with the game's strategy and tactics. On the latter character, I did all of the quest boards for the chantry, irregulars, collective, went after gaxkang, and it was all done on hard/nightmare. (edit: I literally sought out every point of experience on this guy aside from the crates at camp, and at the end he was level 22)

The only thing I did not do on the second playthrough was Slim Couldry's last quest, and on both of them I skipped out on buying the DLC. Personally, I don't see what's offered as worth it, and I read on the wiki that each DLC only adds about 1-2 hours of gameplay  each and they seem to add some game-ruining items so I didn't buy any of them and for the same reason won't be doing so for Return to Ostagar. However, I doubt that's what makes my play time so much shorter...

By the way, I should mention that I have the PS3 version. Is there less content on that version? Are people just in general slower playing this game? Just thought I'd ask that question because I feel like I missed something in the game. I'm also worried because while DAO was advertised as a 60 hour game, it wasn't for me. So maybe Awakening, having been advertised as a 12-15 or 20 hour game, will be a lot shorter than that.

Thanks in advance.

even teh 12- 15 hours isn't even confirmed.

Whats interesting is that I just learned today that 1 of the games competing with DAO for GOY, Batman Arkham Asylum, is only around 15 hours long. And of course Modern Warfare 2 is under 10 hours long.

anyway it also depends how you play the game

Well I know I got lost a lot my first game going through the fade. The gauntlet puzzle added time too, but I think one of the things that takes so much time is the conversations in camp. I was trying to get everyone's approval up so I was really cautious on the answers I picked. I think my first game took 99 hours. The second was 55 or 60, but I am not a fast player either.

Ist playthrough: mage (Origin section took me 6 hours), had Shale and Warden's Keep DLCs, ended level 21, missed quite a lot of the Denirim side quests, talked a lot, watched all the cut scenes, read most of the codices, explored the areas fully, scouted areas before battle and set-up attacks rather than wading in, no backpacks so revisted areas to collect loot and pick locks Liliana couldn't open at the beginning = 110 hours

2nd playthorough: dalish rogue (Origin section took 3 hours), added RtO DLC, ended level 23, think I did just about all the side quests except the last Slim Coudry one, didn't read so many codices or bother with so much chat, more aggressive fighting style and waded in on fights, didn't comb the areas so thoroughly, good lock-picking from the start plus 2 backpacks so very few revisits = 93 hours

Playing on a PC.

I've played through 3 times and my average game time is about 80 hours. I'm not looking to rush through the game. What's the point of paying $50 for a game and burning through it just for the sake of completing it? I like to enjoy my gaming experience and in an interactive RPG, most of that time is spent in conversations. My 11-year-old son wants to play DA but all he sees is the combat but none of the intrigue and dialogue involved in the game; I think he'd be lost in the game not knowing who to talk to or how to respond.

If all you want is hack-and-slash, no talkies - go play Diablo2. A lot of mouse-clicking and button mashing. I've played those types of games and have found them less worthwhile of my time; I'd rather play a game that engages me and keeps my attention long after it is over.

Play time depends a lot on how much you are reading, play style, difficulty setting, knowledge about the game, interest in the dialogs and so on. Did you ever solve the bridge puzzle yourself or did you just google it? Time spent for a run through can differ a lot, but on your first time looking at everything trying out different dialog options, reading the codex, searching stuff, redoing stuff because of mistakes or searching for better solutions 100+ hours play time are quite possible.

I am a slow player as well and I never gotten the 60 hrs of play at all. The only way I can think of how people are getting that many hrs is reading the codex items. I am getting close to 50 hrs.

I gave up on the bridge puzzle and found it on youtube, I can only strain my brain for so long before it starts smoking.:D

First play through - Human female mage. Walked everywhere, talked to everyone, searched everything, plus being a slow player = 93 hrs. I missed quite a few side-quests on that play

Second play through - Human female rogue. Passed a few places my PC knew via being psychic wouldn't yield anything. Same goes for talking to everyone, she passed up the one's that didn't have anything important to add. Psychic, I say. However, found a few more quests in Denerim I didn't know existed = 85 hrs

Playing on a PC.

Question..

My first play was 128 hours....yes I read all the codex entries, admired the scenery etc....my question is, if your not going to do everything you can that is available...why bother playing it?

My first playthrough lasted around 80 hours and it was a relatively skimmed one. I didn't do many of the sidequests or even most of the party-member quests. And I didn't get Sten or Zevran during the playthrough. I played on normal and easy. On the PC.

PS3 player - I've played through the game to near completion (one character stalled waiting for RtO as an integral part of her story) four times and each of my runthroughs has been 60+ hours. I don't consider myself a particularly fast or slow player, though I am pretty thorough. I do have Warden's Keep, and love it. And I have to have Alistair in the Warden Commander armor. Its kind of...his armor in my mind, he looks so fabulous in it. :-P

Other than the fact that I have never even seen Slim Couldry, I've played through most quests and what not. PS3 doesn't have less content, it just seems like you're a fast player.

I've never played the game in less than 100 hours, and that's on multiple playthroughs. I guess I can see 70, if you skip reading the codices and the cutscenes after the first playthrough, or use a mage for all your healing so you don't have to travel around to get ingredients, but I can't imagine doing it in less time than that. Hmm.... Party of my time may come from backtracking with a rougue to open chests, since I rarely have a rogue in my advance party....

Anyway, the game is about as long as advertised, at least for me, and that's very long for a modern video game. It sounds to me like the expansion is only short in relation to that, and is actually pretty much equivalent in length to many full games.

Instead of griping about it being short, I think we should be impressed that the original was so long. They could have made the original 20 hours, and a 20 hour expansion, and no one would be able to say much. Heh...no, I don't believe people will ever stop complaining, actually, but the argument would have to be 'modern games are too short', not 'the expansion is to short.' The expansion is a fairly normal length, it's Origins that was unusual.

That's exactly it...I didn't rush through it at all. I did every single non-DLC side quest, and scoured to find every codex as I wanted to get as high level as possible by the end. There are also only so many places you can go and people you can talk to.

I've never had a problem with the expansions length - given how many times I've played the main campaign through (and still plan to) I'd say I've more than gotten my money's worth.  The same thing, to me, applies to the expansion.  If you're only going to play through it once, then I can see where maybe $40 is a lot for somewhere between 10-30 hours.  But that's coming from the person who grew up playing RPGs that always took 60+ hours to play.  If I just play through Awakening with the three done character I have right now, I'm looking at about 60 hours of game play - that's more than good enough for me.

I think that came from an IGN reviewer. If that reviewer is one of those who plays two to four times faster than I do, as some peoplle seem to be, I can look forward to a lot of game! ;) If they play in a similar manner to the way I play--going through all of it without rushing, then I can look forward to a perfectly normal expansion time. Win-win.

I don't recall the exact number of hours, but I know it was a hell of a lot longer than any other game I've ever played. It was well worth every penny of the 40$ I dropped on it. Not to mention the replayability.

The game length . . . I suppose I'm just older than a lot of people here, because I remember paying $70+ for games that promised at least 20 hours, and didn't have very indepth stories, and I thought I was getting a GREAT deal. Now games cost half of what they used to (even before adjusting for inflation), and have far more depth, and are longer to boot. $40 for a 15 hour game, to me at least, is not an unreasonable price (talking about Awakenings here). Especially if it's GOOD. If it's great, if it has depth, I'm happy. I will play it many times and end up paying probably about 10 cents an hour or something.

Edit: DA:O has given me so much play time, it's not even funny, and I'm still finding new things (minor at this point, but still).  I'm happy that actually apparently the bar has been raised for the quality of video games.  I would far rather pay a bit more for a fabulous game than less for a decent game.

The game length extends dramatically through side quests. My first playthrough I had no idea how many quests were available that I had missed (doing Crow missions for Ignacio, realizing that all companions had personal quests, three full sets of armor through Wade, having a tryst with Ionia in Highever [HMN], etc). There are so many side quests in Orzammar that I can't even head to the Deep Roads for several hours upon entry--Lyrium smuggling, Dagna's quest, Figor's, informal Proving fighting (which is about the most fun I have in the game). I haven't even completed those two weird quest in the Circle either, since magic isn't my thing. I spend alot of time in the Fade to find all my free Talent points also, since this is what puts you 1 full level ahead of your companions.

Game time further extends by reading all Codex entries, using Tomes, continuous trading and shopping for the game's best items, searching for prime weapons and armor, adding enchantments to my and my companions, figuring out what to keep, sell and store, setting tactics and levelling up your companions (no auto-levelling allowed). I tend to spend alot of time on all of these, and usually read Codex entries at least twice to understand the lore.

Trying to key all random road events, crafting items, exploring all companion dialogue options in Camp, figuring out what gifts to give to whom, and going through the effort to max out approval of your companions (always worth it in the end) tends to add untold hours. Since decision making is not in real time, I will take my time in trying to predict consequences for big decisions. Using the radial menu during combat I know eats up a bit of time over the course of the game, and I do this alot since I like traps and bombs. Approaching all NPCs in each area to see if they have anything to offer you (and many do) also slows you down quite a bit; not to mention re-visiting previously cleared areas to key-up fights for more EXP points.

I completed my first run-through in about 45 hours. Every one after that has not come in under 80 yet.  BTW, you can count me in the middle age category, so I find myself in no hurry to do anything. Posted Image

Yeah I'm definitely in the slow player camp then. Right now, first play-through, I'm just before the Landsmeet and I'm sitting pretty on 93 hours. I've read the codex, never skip dialogue, and have done everything I could find.. I'm sure I went AFK for some of that time, but I usually pause. SO... yep, definitely on the slow side.

But hey, I'd rather take it slowly and have it be meaningful and memorable than rush it gloss over the fun stuff... good motto for other parts of life too.. =p

My initial playthrough took roughly 119 hours — and I relished just about every hour of it. I did get a bit frustrated with the Fade part of the Circle Tower quest, though.

I see a couple posters here asserting that I rushed through the game somehow, I didn't. In fact, I was very worried that my mage would not acquire enough spell points to create the build I wanted to, so from the get go I made a big deal out of finding every last xp point. Here is exactly what I did:

-Spent max amount of time to comb over the mage tower during origin for every last bit of codex xp. Cleared out spider cave, talked to every npc for possible codex. Even killed the knight spirit guy in the Fade for the 80 something xp.
-Did every quest in Ostagar/Wilds, even the Chasnid signs and Gazarath
-Cleared out everything in Tower of Ishal
-Lothering, all quests
-Mage tower, got all font boosts
-A few Denerim side quests for xp/gold so I wouldn't have to go through other parts of the game without good spells/equip
-Brecillian Forest, sided with werewolves/witherfang
-Redcliffe Village
-Haven
-Orzammar, sided with Bhelen
-Finished everything in Denerim that I couldn't do before due to low level/lack of spells/gear (including Crow quests)
-Made cash through lyrium pots to buy best gear when the gold ran out
-Went back to slay High Dragon/Flemeth

I ran out of content. This was at like 35 hours, then I went and did the landsmeet once I was sure all chantry/blackstone/mage collective/interested party quests were done. 6 out of 8 Slim Couldry quests done. All personal companion quests done. All codexes in the game? I don't know because PS3 doesn't keep track of how many you have out of how many there are like the PC version does.

The entire time, the only text I fastforwarded was the Ostagar portion.

Once I finished, the total time was 43 hours and I ended at level 22, 2 levels higher than my warrior. I was playing a Human AW/BM, don't know if that matters. Only quest not done was Slim Couldry's last one.

I'm not sure how that's rushing through content, but it sounds like I did everything there was to do in the game, no? Isn't 22 the highest you can get anyways?

I believe you WildcardOne, I just don't know how you did it. Perhaps it's an age difference? When I was young I could blow through games fairly quickly but now I have to take it slow, save often, redo my equipment, tactics, etc. etc. I just can't see this game lasting less than 70-80 hours for me....

Damned OCD gets worse as you get older.
