Question..

My first play was 128 hours....yes I read all the codex entries, admired the scenery etc....my question is, if your not going to do everything you can that is available...why bother playing it?

The "romances"... duh. ^_^

Hmm, well

I had to use tactics a lot less with my mage. For example, the broodmother took me about 1h 30 min to get right on my warrior on normal mode, yet it took only 1 try on my AW/BM because all I had to do was blood wound the tentacles and give greater nature salve to all my party members. I also didn't get the combat tactics skills as much because I wanted my companions to be crafters. I imagine that might have shaved off quite a few hours considering I was playing Hard/Nightmare. I don't have any DLC, so what's that, 3-4 hours right there?

As for the rest, I don't know.

WildcardOne, I don't have a PS3 so I can't say this for certain, but I suspect that the game goes faster on your system. I have friends with the PS game and they finished *much* faster than I did on the PC and they are generally better at eeking out every last bit of content than I am. My first game took me over 90 hours, and even during the runs where I skip over lots of (memorized) dialog, I still take over 60 hours to finish.

Expand on what you mean by 'game goes faster.' Is there less content on the console versions than the PC? That's one of the main questions I've had since I posted this thread.

I'm sorry -- as I said, I don't have a PS3 so I can't play it to compare to what I have on the PC. I can only assume there is less content, or perhaps (for game mechanics reasons) the combat progresses faster on the PS3. In order to get a good answer you'd have to hear from someone who has played the entire game on the PC and the PS3 or perhaps a developer.

You say you focus on getting the most of the game experiencewise...

The most timeconsuming aspect of the game is actually talking to npc's/companions and actually reading all the codexes... not only finding them.

My last playthrough was just like your AW/BM-save. Got almost everything out of the game experiencewise.. and got to lvl 22. But only 47 hours played.

My first time I clocked 100+ hours... on that save I read all the codexes and ran through every dialogue I could find. I actually missed A LOT of the sidequests... and still clocked twice the amount of hours than my last playthrough.

First playthrough on PS3 was ~54 hours, and I felt I rushed that, only personal sidequest I did was Alistairs, and I didn't even realize then it was a sidequest, didn't go after High Dragon, missed lots of other 'hidden' quests but I wanted to get to the ending b4 having to leave home for two weeks for work.

First playthough on the PC game was about 75 hours long, but that was with the red-haze screen of death....(stupid video card driver, only took me 20 hours of game play to go du'oh) But even now, on PC, and wandering everywhere, trying to find everybit of information I can, and talking to everyone (even if I know they have nothing to say), my games are ~ 45-60 hours long. I'm on my 4th playthrough on the PC.

Edit: But I'm a fast reader and a little ADD when it comes to people talking.....

Like most people my playthroughs get shorter - I still do all the quests I can, but I'm more likely to click through conversations and not read the Codex entries. I also know where to go and what to do so I can zip through the Fade no problem, and so forth. Typical play now is around 45 hours.

I try to discover every little thing about a game if they offer you a whole world to live in.

My first playthrough took 117 hours - I did the mage circle twice because I passed on Leliana in Lothering. I thought she was as crazy as the dialog indicated. Then I researched opening all these chests that I was passing up and found out that Leliana could do that for me. Yeah, I went into the game blind.

I have played 9 characters all the way through to the end. My quickest time was 71 hours only because I don't read the journal anymore and I skip through some cut scenes. I still pick every single elfroot in the world. I talk to all my companions to max out their approval. I adjust my play style to pick up all the achievements (currently 87/88). I still stop and listen to the conversations my companions have with each other and they are still funny. I still find new dialog and situations even after all this time on the game.

that is ridiculous... you would have to suck or get really lost. i did much of the game in 40-50hrs. on a second play through the number should go down...as you are no longer a newb

The first play-through I completed took, according to the game clock, 108 hours.  Now, some of that time was spent with the game Paused for a couple of hours, and I don't know how that factors in.  Other characters in various stages are Nyla at 67 hours, Jael at 48, Natia at 46, Bojhana at 80 (Landsmeet), Jeneris at 18, Socorra at 31 and Olivia at 2.

Needless to say, I take my time.  Olivia is still in the mage's origin story, and Jeneris is only a Level 7.  Nyla is in the Deep Roads, Socorra is in Denerim at the start of the Sacred Ashes quest, but I don't remember off-hand where the others are.  I play on a PC and do have all the DLC.

If you wish to look them over and compare their stories to your own characters' stories, you can find them here:

In every play through I try to get most, if not all, of my companions to 100 love/friendly. I do every side quest available, attempt to find everything, loot everything, etc.

The only thing I don't do is read the codexes.

My longest play through was something like 55 hours.

So yeah, not sure how people get 100 hours out of normal play. Not bringing a rogue and going back for every locked chest maybe? Reading codexes?

I do read the Codex entries, although not as many now that I'm on my seventh play-through. I talk to everyone I can have a convo with, think carefully about each decision (often sitting and staring at the computer screen while I do so), unlock everything available and make heavy use of the TAB key to make sure I don't miss anything. I just recently discovered some Codex entries in the Fade during Broken Circle that I hadn't found before. I guess I just don't play as quickly as some others do, but I enjoy the more leisurely pace.

Probably the thinking and the codex entries that make up most of the difference.  I think my first game actually took longer due to not knowing about tab though.  I spent hours combing the Brecellian Ruins looking for the AW phylactery until someone told me about that.

But, I do tend to be a very... decisive person.  Decisions come up, I glance over them, and pick one immediately based on how I think my character would react.  I can see the alternative thoughtful approach taking much longer, and I certainly don't fault anyone for it.

I can also see how it would add many many hours to the gameplay.

I've had the game since release I've only played about 20 hours but I was shocked when I checked my stats to see that I've only completed 13% (Put this down for a while to wade though Mass Effect 2 and spent over a month out of the country). Loving this game so much more than Mass Effect 2 atm

For what its worth, my first playthrough was about 54 hours. I missed a couple sidequests I didn't know about, but other than that I thoroughly listened to every dialogue, explored every nook and cranny (still somehow missed those sidequests, timing I guess), built up every companion's approval as much as I cared to and read a good number (though not all) of codex entries. Believe me, for those talking about OCD and the obsession with exploring everywhere and mulling over choices, I'm the worst of the worst. Still, I can't understand some of the higher numbers I'm seeing. In subsequent playthroughs I have a hard time breaking 40 hours, and thats while doing everything, including the few sidequests I missed the first time. I'm not too optimistic about how much time Awakening will occupy me, but I can't deny that Origins at least is very good bang for the buck.

Playing on the PC, btw.

So I had a theory about the big differences in game time we're apparently seeing on the PC and have just tested it - if you hit pause on the PC the game clock still continues. I pause a lot to think and micro-manage fights (and sometimes for extended periods such as answering the phone, multi-tasking real-life stuff, convo's with the husband, etc.). Maybe this explains why my recorded game times are 90-110+ hours on the PC?

Anyone want to try it on a Xbox / PS3 to confirm that's a factor for these wide variations we're seeing?

This is probably a big factor with me I guess.   I pause to make dinner, etc.  I wonder if the clock is still running when I sometimes get on the game and go to Profile then the Bioware forums from there.  Still, my median play time is 84 hours out of 9 completions.  I play on hard setting on a pc.  What could take more time with me too is that I use a "puller" to only fight a few mobs at a time instead of wading into a huge fight.

I see a couple posters here asserting that I rushed through the game somehow, I didn't. In fact, I was very worried that my mage would not acquire enough spell points to create the build I wanted to, so from the get go I made a big deal out of finding every last xp point. Here is exactly what I did:

-Spent max amount of time to comb over the mage tower during origin for every last bit of codex xp. Cleared out spider cave, talked to every npc for possible codex. Even killed the knight spirit guy in the Fade for the 80 something xp.
-Did every quest in Ostagar/Wilds, even the Chasnid signs and Gazarath
-Cleared out everything in Tower of Ishal
-Lothering, all quests
-Mage tower, got all font boosts
-A few Denerim side quests for xp/gold so I wouldn't have to go through other parts of the game without good spells/equip
-Brecillian Forest, sided with werewolves/witherfang
-Redcliffe Village
-Haven
-Orzammar, sided with Bhelen
-Finished everything in Denerim that I couldn't do before due to low level/lack of spells/gear (including Crow quests)
-Made cash through lyrium pots to buy best gear when the gold ran out
-Went back to slay High Dragon/Flemeth

I ran out of content. This was at like 35 hours, then I went and did the landsmeet once I was sure all chantry/blackstone/mage collective/interested party quests were done. 6 out of 8 Slim Couldry quests done. All personal companion quests done. All codexes in the game? I don't know because PS3 doesn't keep track of how many you have out of how many there are like the PC version does.

The entire time, the only text I fastforwarded was the Ostagar portion.

Once I finished, the total time was 43 hours and I ended at level 22, 2 levels higher than my warrior. I was playing a Human AW/BM, don't know if that matters. Only quest not done was Slim Couldry's last one.

I'm not sure how that's rushing through content, but it sounds like I did everything there was to do in the game, no? Isn't 22 the highest you can get anyways?

You play like me . The only different i do the DLC .. It's take me around 40 hours and i normaly finish at level 22.
hell at this point  i always finish with all my compagnions at 100 .i know the game like my pocket so that help.

30 to 45 hours at nightmare. That's doing all the sidequests as well. If games are about hours they should be giving away AO:A for free. I think the replay value of DA:O makes up for the relatively short duration of the game for a typical RPG.
