Er... just to clarify, so you can load to a point before you died... and still get your achievement?
Or does it remember you died, even if you load?

Yes. You can reload and the game 'forgets'.

Okay, sweet. 
I died once in the Fade thing in the Circle Tower. Wanted to see if I could run through the fires.
Turns out you can't. Even if it doesn't do enough damage to kill you, you just fall over dead.
