Ladies and Gentlemen,

I have gone out of my way over the past few days to be outspoken yet respectful about my dissapointment in  Mass Effect 2, compared to Mass Effect 1.  When you build something up in your head long enough, it tends to take on a life of its own to such a degree that you lose perspective.

I created this thread for two purposes:

1. To admit to myself and to others that while there are things that I greatly dislike in this game, as a whole it is STILL far better than most any other game out there.  The fleshed-out details, graphics and over-all 'visceral' feel are great improvements to the original.

2. To encourage others who were similarly dissapointed yet still want to enjoy ME2 to take a break from the game and the criticism forums, lower your expectations a bit (assuming they were as overblown as mine) and re-approach the game with an open mind, and try to appreciate it for what it is, not what you wish it would be.

This doesn't nullify my many criticisms of the game, and isn't meant to undermine the criticisms of others.  I still think that limited ammo, chest-high walls, no inventory, health-regen and no free planet exploration were very bad ideas.  However, focusing on such only robs you of enjoyment of what is, at the end of the day, a spectacular piece of entertainment.  So I'll get off my soapbox now, and wish you all happy gaming.  And to Bioware, keep up the good work, but let's go back to the drawing board on a few things for ME3, okay?

Life is short.

Thanks and gig'em
PilotJoe

P.S. - The above applies to all aspects of the game except planet-scanning.  That still sucks.  Bad.<3

I for one don't miss the crappy inventory menu from the first, but do miss having tons of weapons and armor even if they were all just the same but a little higher damage/defense as you progress in the game.

I personally would have liked planet exploration over scanning... but only for minerals and other random stuff... the side missions are infinitely improved over the last, seeing as each one feels somewhat unique and not the same bunker.

the only complaint I have that I haven't really seen emphathized is the story... though it is good, it didn't feel quit as epic as the first. It almost felt like a filler episode. Plus this time around I didn't really get into all of the little details like I did in the first... never bothered with the codex. And got sick and tired of mercenary gangs being the main enemy throughout the game. felt like I was playing Grand Theft Auto at times. I understand it is the terminus systems but meh w/e

I still love this game and its my #1 game atm

Very little and dependent on mods/talents.
Nothing like ME2s regen 1 to full in a few seconds.

I agree.  Not to tread into spoiler territory, but they could have done a little better here too.  The team-mate characterizations were great, but as anyone who has beaten it can tell you, this one didn't wrap-up nearly as satisfyingly as the first.  Huge letdown.  Cliffhanger? C'mon Bioware, you're better than that.

yeah its very easy to criticize when we don't have the crappy inventory and the carbon-copy side missions. i'm so happy to see those two things gone forever.

Too bad those couldn't have just been improved upon instead of ditched.
Now the issue is with the crappy upgrade system and the carbon copy shooting gallery missions.
By your logic and approval maybe in the future instead of getting those imrpvoved we can get new systems with a new set of problems.

you can't call "shooting gallery" missions carbon copy. they are all high fidelity settings. even if you don't like them, they are not carbon copy in the same sense that ME1 side missions were literally the EXACT same building for 20+ missions. you can't even compare them.

No, actually.

I really enjoyed ME2, and when I put the game in my Xbox for the first time, I didn't have a list of corrections which I was eager to see addressed. I just wanted to find out what the next installment in Shepard and crew's life were. Turns out I had a LOT of fun on the way.

I'll even admit that the first time I started up, and fired that pistol, I was grinning like an idiot. Not just through "ME2 IS IN MY HOUSE, HERE!" hype, but also because it just felt so much more solid, and real. That feeling continued into the game, and when I finished it, I was deeply satisfied, if not a little upset that the next game wouldn't be out for AGES. :(

This feeling was reinforced as I returned to ME1, and to be honest, I just got frustrated. It just feels so clunky, and...light...compared to ME2.

The ONE minor issue I have with anything is how little a difference the armor traits make to your stats. I mean, 3% boost to health? What's the point? And I dunno about anyone else, but do you even notice in-game when you get 10% extra whatever? I just feel some of the enhancements could've been a bit more, well...obvious.

Other than that, miles better IMO.

I can't even PLAY ME1 now because of this game. I tried it the other day (started fresh) and gave up on it after I got through Eden Prime.

Yes I can. Enter a mission and see an assortment of waisthigh boxes and crates, run to cover, fight.
Run about the mission, seen another conveniently placed assortment of waisthigh boxes and crates, run to cover, fight.
The level maybe different but thanks to the shooting gallery effect they just become copies.

I can play both just fine, since they are essentially different games.

Actually I'll agree with you on the overly cover-based missions at times. It was hard to believe that some of the locations were even real at times.

With regards to the actual gameplay mechanics, however, ME2 is far superior. I'dve been happy if they'd implemented the ME2 combat system in more ME1 style locations. Less boxes, a few more *appropriately-placed* pillars and it'd be fine.

If there's a wide, open corridor for example, leave it a wide open corridor, and make the player think to find some alternative form of cover. No random walls that seem to intersect the corridor for no apparent reason.

I just ignored that though in general. It didn't detract from the experience for me in any way, just something I'd noticed.
