I am playing DAO on a PC. My character is a LVL 12 Mage and my party usually features Shale (LVL 11), Leliana (LVL 11) and Wynne (LVL 11).

My initial idea was to have Shale take a beating while the rest of us heal and attack from afar during battle and to have Leliana steal for money and open locked stuff while exploring.

Unfortunately, Shale dies quickly (despite 30 str, 30 con), Leliana (str 19, dex 25, cun 22) can't open hardly anything locked and her arrows are useless, Wynne is a great healer but many times can't heal as fast as the enemies do damage and I (mag 32, will 30) can only cast tempest and cone of cold (seem to be the best spells for cc) so many times before the party is bum-rushed and dead. I have tried to load points into the characters' most critical stats but I always feel like I am fighting enemies that are a few notches better than my party (even though I have found ways to win the necessary battles up to this point, my party dies a lot). Also, my staff seems to be weak as well...hardly affects the enemies we are currently facing.

I have made it to Orzammar and have just entered the Deep Road. Crap! I can't even make it past the first group of enemies. What am I doing wrong? Are there really powerful weapons, staffs and armor in all of those chests that Leliana can't open?

Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Play on easy difficulty if the battles give you so much trouble.

Does your mage have any heal spells or are you relying on Wynne for all the healing? If so, do you also have Shale set to drink a potion when she gets low on health? I've got her set to drink a least powerful if she's less than 50% and a most powerful if she's below 10%.

However I also found that, for me anyway (being a healing mage primarily) I have much better success if I have Shale and Alistair, they work well off each other when handling large damage groups.

Also do you have +darkspawn damage runes on your weapons?

Leiliana needs a much higher Dex value (40+) to be effective with bows; also, her Cunning needs to be a lot higher (30+) and she needs at least the first 3 Lock picking talents (and Trap skills) to be an effective thief. Pump strength on Shale and manage his combat more closely (the 1st 3 trees of his talents are particularly effective when used in the right combination). You might want to go to another quest area and come back to Orzammar after your crew has gotten more experience as that quest is generally best saved for last.

My advise is to do the other treaty quests first, namely mage circle and brecilian (but come back later for the revenants). Orzammar is pretty tough for a lvl12 party. The mercenary band near the enrance is pretty well-rounded (1xmage, 1xarcher, 1xDW and 1x2H) and can dominate an under-prepared low-level party.

I've honestly never been too enamored with Shale myself for the same reasons you listed, but regardless. And Orzammar is pretty much the most powerful of the quest lines.

That being said...to keep it simple for Leliana, The str is nice, 20 is all you need for the best leather armor. 34 dex (after items) gets you the best bows after that it increases defense and chance to hit, some suggest increasing it, I personally dont. Cunning will only help her dmg output if you include the ability Lethality and use longbows. Each point of Lock Picking adds the equivalant of 10 cunning to the score when checking against the lock. I'd recommend focusing most of her tactics on using Critical shot and Arrow of Slaying, offensively they're definately two of the best. Pinning shot is very effective if used for a single attack on a ranged opponent, a pinned enemy cant take action for a few seconds but the effect breaks if they get hit again. Crippling shot and Shattering shot I personally didnt put much stock in, but to each their own.

I doubt you've missed much from not unlocking the chests, rarely do you find anything of worth besides some stuff to sell to the merchants.

Using a Self: Health <X%: Use Health Poultice is an excellent strategy to have on most any character. You can change up the value of the poultice and the value of X at your discretion.

You may, as was suggested, also want to change up the party and bring in a second front line high-armor fighter. Alistair, Sten, Dog, or Ohgren all fit the bill nicely. I've seen much better success going with an extra melee rather than an extra mage.

Speaking of Mages, Crowd Control is a key factor when dealing with enemies in DA:O. For large groups a well placed Sleep, waking nightmare, blood wound, mass paralysis, or paralysis explosion combo can work very well while you take a few of them down to make the numbers more in your favor. Likewise, single target crowd control like horror, paralysis, blood control, Paralysis Glyph, and crushing prison can all be used to keep one more foe from hitting Shale, greatly increasing it's chances of survival. Personally I find the primal control spells of Blizzard, Earthquake, and cone of cold a little heavy handed when it comes to Friendly fire causing just as much disruption for you as your opponents and usually causing alot of archers to be very upset with your soon-to-be-pincushion of a mage.

Hope that helps. Good Luck.

I remember having the same problem when I picked Orzammar line quest first. Though i found a great way to deal with enemies with having Morrigan and myself as a warrior duel-wielder. Use cone of cold and rely much of your offence by stunning them, causing them to shatter, which can even trigger at large enemies such as ogres. Use the many stunning abilities with Shale and dirty fighting with Leliana. Also, try to line up enemies so that the cone can affect them all :P

good luck

For me Shale made a better tank than Alistair especially before you can get Alistair into the better massive armors.

Get a decent gem for armor and follow the Stoneheart line for tanking and Shale is very durable. Shale tanked the High Dragon, Flemeth, & Gaxkang just as well or better than a sword & shield warrior.

Those are almost the only fights Shale really does well at--she's immune to Grab and Overwhelm. She's also good against werewolves, drakes, and wolves. A templar warrior will perform better overall for most other fights, though, including Gaxxkang. Not that Shale is bad, but a dex warrior is better overall.
