I am playing DAO on a PC. My character is a LVL 12 Mage and my party usually features Shale (LVL 11), Leliana (LVL 11) and Wynne (LVL 11).
My initial idea was to have Shale take a beating while the rest of us heal and attack from afar during battle and to have Leliana steal for money and open locked stuff while exploring.
Unfortunately, Shale dies quickly (despite 30 str, 30 con), Leliana (str 19, dex 25, cun 22) can't open hardly anything locked and her arrows are useless, Wynne is a great healer but many times can't heal as fast as the enemies do damage and I (mag 32, will 30) can only cast tempest and cone of cold (seem to be the best spells for cc) so many times before the party is bum-rushed and dead. I have tried to load points into the characters' most critical stats but I always feel like I am fighting enemies that are a few notches better than my party (even though I have found ways to win the necessary battles up to this point, my party dies a lot). Also, my staff seems to be weak as well...hardly affects the enemies we are currently facing.
I have made it to Orzammar and have just entered the Deep Road. Crap! I can't even make it past the first group of enemies. What am I doing wrong? Are there really powerful weapons, staffs and armor in all of those chests that Leliana can't open?
Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Use your attacks to tear them apart.

Stop charging everything.
Pause often.
Use crowd control.
Focus fire.

When Shale levels up keep adding points in Dexerity and she won't take so much of a beating.
Also make good use of her AOE stun when she is taking lots of damage fast.

Many people use Shale incorrectly, because they think that a golem is per se indestructible and can simply wade into battle. Read dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Companion_Strategies#Shale for more information on good strategies concering Shale.

All of the above, plus check equipment. What crystals are you using for Shale? Most of the mobs in the Deep Roads do nature damage, so seeing to it that she has the best crystals of the correct kind will make a difference with her. Also, what tactics and powers do you have set for Shale? As a general rule, if you're using Shale as a tank, Stoneheart is the way to go.
For Lelianna, are you using her in melee or at ranged? Either way, get her Lethality as soon as possible. She doesn't need strength above 20, but pump her cunning and dexterity as high as possible. How is she at stealth for you? If she sneaks successfully, have her scout out the opposition, the rejoin the main party.
For more CC, Wynne ought to be able to cast earthquake. While that doesn't stop archers from shooting, at does slow the melee mobs from closing and is a fast casting spell.

Thank you everyone for your replies.
I am currently using Lelianna primarly as an archer during combat. Is that what most of you do? If so, how do you increase the damage done by her arrows? Also, how do you have her configured so that she can open chests?
Thanks again.

She needs high cunning to open chests. The skill helps massively. Treat arrows as distance dots so upping her rate of fire is always good. Scattershot is an amazing thing as well.

There isn't anything very good in locked chest, you only miss out on some money and XP. You need 70 points of cunning to open all chests, alternately each tier of Deft Hands is worth 10 points of cunning.
Shale sucks if don't have decent crystals.
Leliana has a pretty poor hit rate and needs some support to get her attack up (especially if you go for cunning), e.g. Heroic Offense cast by Wynne and make her a Duelist later. Anyway, neither a Shale tank nor a Leliana archer is a good damage dealer (neither is Wynne with the default spells).
With your party, I would respec Leliana for dual-wielding (get a respec mod).
If you want your Mages to deal damage (and with 2 mages you kind of have to), by far the best spells are Walking Bomb / Virulent walking bomb, though I will admit they are tricky to use. There are nice synergies with the Earth line (Petrify, cast Walking Bomb, shatter with Stone Fist to blow it up; Cone of Cold will do nicely instead of Petrify) and Crushing Prison (hold the bomb in place and blow it up). The glyph line is great for keeping the enemies in place (look up Paralysis Explosion).
The Sleep line can be extremely effective, use Waking Nightmare to make enemies fight each other.
If you don't max Magic / Spellpower, spells that can be resisted won't work that well, especially on higher difficulties (an exception being Cone of Cold, where the resistance check is buggy).
