does anybody have a preferred/recommended method for taking them out? i'm a level 59 soldier and i can't believe how difficult it is to kill these guys. i've tried sledgehammer, inferno, and high explosive rounds with varying results. so far it justs ends up holding the trigger for as long as possible. i guess i'm really asking if there is a quicker way. thanks!

You could try bringing along a teammate with Biotics and use the environment to kill them: Lift them up and Throw them away into the sky or over cliffs. I haven't played a Soldier on Insanity so I'm not sure what else you could do.

The electro shock thing that husks do will recharge their shields. So as helpful as overload is, you can't let them get off that shock or it will undo your efforts. Biotic control can keep them at bay. And once their shields are down, shotgun blasts will put them on their butts. Husks aren't too tough once their shields are down. As for krogan, they are just a pain if you let them activate immunity. Use biotics to disable them before hand and they will go down fast.

I equip myself and teamates who are usually Garris and Liara (I was surprised how awesome she can be in battle!), anyway I equip everyone with the guns that start with the letter "H". There the most powerful weapons I think. It's like HMPA or something. There's one for each type of gun. Then I upgrade each one with Frictionless Materials X, Kenitic Coil X, and I use Snowblind Rounds X. This keeps all my guns from overheating. I have my assault rifle skill maxed out and I use it, Garrus also has his Assualt rifle maxed and Liara just uses the pistol. Using those weapons and a mix of shield boost, utility, and adrenilane rush and you can wipe anyone out. It takes time. It took forever for me to get past the creepers on Feros.

Biotics, Sledgehammer Shotgun rounds, and HE grenades are my ways of dealing with them. The quickest way to kill them is to use Throw or Lift to hurl them "out of bounds" for an instant death, but anything that knocks them down and prevents them from taking actions for a few precious seconds is a big help.
I'm playing through on Insanity now with a Soldier, Tali and Liara. Starting off a battle with Singularity allows me to pick off exceptionally tough opponents before they can get their defenses up (the Krogan Battlemaster on Therum died within 5 seconds with this tactic), and then I just Lift/Throw/knockdown enemies as appropriate.

Find an old save or use buyback to get the VII Shredder and Tungsten rounds back. Best ammo mods in the game. As far as saying anything that hasn't already been said in this thread, knocking husks down before they discharge stops the attack (if not visibly). Though it sounds crazy, if none of your biotics can knock them down, it's actually better to charge them and melee them to the ground.
Battlemasters are ****y no matter what, but I'd recommend using stasis and lift to keep them busy while you kill their allies, then focus on them.
