This might have something to do with my Mass Effect 2 problem as well.

I've been having odd lag spikes, crashes to desktop (especially during cutscenes), and texture distortion affecting my gameplay. On top of that, a problem persistent with Mass Effect 2 (interface flickering, which is temporarily resolved by alt-tabbing back into the game constantly) also appears in Dragon Age.

The texture distortions make my game look like this when they occur (screenshot version):

In actuality, though, in the game, it's as if you take a piece of texture and stretch it as far as you can see. For example, imagine seeing a really thick white line from Duncan's armor stretching into the sky. That's a pretty vague idea of what it looks like, and it happens everywhere, not in just one location; I'm constantly staring at a wall of black lines whilst running around Ostagar.

My system specs:
Windows XP SP3
Core 2 Duo e7200 @2.53Ghz
Nvidia GeForce 8600 GTS
2 GB RAM

All drivers are updated to the most latest version available.

IMPORTANT: These problems did not appear when I still ran Vista Ultimate x32 Edition prior to downgrading.

Another side note: These problems affect only BioWare's games; all other games that I have on my system work perfectly fine.

Ditto. The game ran perfectly fine until I updated to version 1.02a so that I could get the Return to Ostagar DLC, now I can't even play the game without some texture or other going berserk.

I've got 2 screenshots of my texture glitch that didn't get turned into multi-colored corrupted mush like happened to Mystalt's or most of my others.

edit:
I've got a few more images of the glitch, enough that it's simpler to just give the link to the album:

Yep, Sammorbai's pretty much got the direct proof of what it looks like ingame.

I do agree with you, though. When I ran DAO without the 1.02a patch, it looked perfectly fine.

So something's probably busted in 1.02a. That there aren't more complaints makes me think either:

1) A lot of people haven't updated to 1.02 because it fixed the darkspawn blood infinite experience glitch.

2) It's something specific to our systems. I have nearly the same system specs as you posted.

I may have found out what was causing the glitch, on my computer at any rate. I need to do some more playtesting to be sure, but it seems that the problem is that 1.02a wasn't compatible with my Nvidia drivers. I updated my drivers today and the texture glitch seems to be gone. If I don't see the glitch again in the next hour, that's probably the fix.

edit:
Doesn't look like that was it, the glitch just showed up on the ogre at the end of Return to Ostagar, but alt tabbing made it go away.

Ok, updating my drivers didn't eliminate the problem completely since I saw it once or twice in the Return to Ostagar content, but other than that I haven't seen the glitch. So Mystalt, updating your drivers will probably help.

@Sammorbai:

Don't really think it's drivers, I was using the newest one at the time, so I doubt it.

Odd thing is now the interface flicker/lag spike combos are now appearing in other games as well, not just ME2/DAO. Was playing Far Cry 2 when I encountered fairly heavy lag in a place that was supposed to be lag free; paused the game, and saw the pause menu flickering (much like it did in ME2).

I think my problem originates with horizontal tearing, but I'm not entirely sure on the cause of it.

there is a error with latest nvida driver that just came out that screws with the fan speeds it has a known issue of making the video card overheating under a major load and it will kill the card. from looking at that screen shot thats a video card problem. look up in google starcraft 2 killed my video card.

If that's the case, wasn't there a way to manually re-adjust the fan speed?

EDIT: It appears that you're right. Nvidia just pulled the 196.75 drivers off of public. Apparently, numerous people have been having the same problem that I had; but the final straw was people getting their cards fried when playing the Starcraft 2 beta. Ouch.
