i have to say zevran- i dont like his personality but he is soo much more develpoed than thane
thane- u have to recuit him like it or not,get a few short discussions with him. then u can choose to help him with his son or ignore him. and thats all u get
zevran- u choose to recruit, leave, or kill him. u can have loads of different conversations. even romance him if you wish. depending on how much he likes u he will either betray u and force u to kill him. or he will help u kill the assassins.
thane has the better personiality
but zevran is more developer therefore more interesting as a character
You can romance Thane too. And I found Thane's background to be a lot deeper than Zevran's though I disagree with his BS philosophy as Shepard puts it.
yes but i mean u can romance him even as a male if u so wish, u dont have to start all over again as a female character. il agree thanes background is deeper but i like all the talking and intereacting and learning you do with the characters and how your relationships can change things which is much more developed in general in DA- thats just my opinion though
Wait so you're saying if a character isn't bisexual then they're not developed well? Way to strengthen your argument bro.
no im just pointing out the fact that all of DAO characters are much more developed than that of ME2 which is limited to what about 4 conversations each?
i only brought up the bi romance options to address the argument that u made stating that "You can romance Thane too." whereas your sexual preference doesnt matter in DAO as u wont have to start all over again as the opposite sex if u encounter a same-sex character u like
the characters in dragon age have loads of different conversations
talk amongst themselves
discuss mission outcomes
discuss party status
give gifts to build your relationship
relationship can range from party members hating you and arguing with you to the point where they leave or attack you- right through neutral, cool, warm, friendly, admire, care and love
whilst mass effect 2
you get 4 maybe 5 conversations from each character and 1 usually very dull and annoying mission
the only 2 statu's there are is "loyal" and "normal" which is terrible there are probably megadrive games with more developed relations than that

I can't talk seriously to Zevran. He just reminds me too much of Puss in Boots. Which would be fine if I pictured Antonio Bandares every time I spoke to him, but instead, the only mental image I get is this:
he is serious business !!!

I have romanced Zevran and then went back to a save and called it off. Yes he has some depth, but I just can't stomach his sliminess. I think what did me in was the pirate comment. Ewwwwww! I find Zevran a much better friend than companion. When he is a friend, he looks at you and not at what you are (male/female). You may not get the earing gift, but you do get a sense that Zevran appreciates the friendship even more so than a love relationship in my opinion.

That being said: I will have to go for Thane. In terms of personality and voice over i cant compare the two as i like them both in their own way. However, in terms of Assassin i think Thane is better fit for the role.

So I let him live. Then he actually asks me to take him with me. That--I don't even--no. Absolutely not. I'm not letting someone who has been paid and should be actively trying to kill me follow me around. I sure as hell am not falling asleep anywhere around them. The whole "Oh, if I kill you the Crows will probably do me in anyways" thing absolutely does not fly. I don't buy that the Crows would kill one of their better assassins for not killing the target on the first try.
So this is usually when Zevran and I part ways. I don't need an assassin waiting around to stab me in the back. But on my first playthrough I figure, "Hey, I should probably collect all of the party members." So I let Zevran join despite my overwhelming urge to scalp him. He then starts telling me about all these times that he's had sex with his target and then killed them later. He tells me about how they begged and pleaded with him to let them live. I start getting seriously twitchy around this point. It's like he's mocking me. And then he actually starts coming on to me. After telling me about how he's killed so many targets after sleeping with them. No. You. Didn't. I immediately shut him down. I'm not putting up with this bull**** on my first playthrough.
He then proceeds to betray me because I didn't sleep with him. I was kind of surprised that Bioware actually had a squaddie betray me. But, let's face it, if someone, prior to that point, had told me that one of my squaddies was going to try to kill me later on, I would have immediately pointed to Zevran and said, "It's that guy, isn't it?" And then they would have slapped me upside the head and started calling me a moron for letting the GOD DAMN ASSASSIN THAT WAS HIRED TO MURDER ME follow me around. And I would have deserved it.
Later on, I'm playing as a female elf. I had already romanced Alistair on a different playthrough, and it's probably one of my favorite romances I've ever done in a video game. However, I get a shiny achievement if I just let Zevran sleep with me. I'm so close. So, I go for it. I ignore everything he says that makes me want to have Shale sit on him, and I just plow through to the naughty bits. I am now sleeping with someone that I don't trust and fully expect to kill me. Wow. Wow. Jaw is on the floor at how stupid my character is. And then he's so damn cocky about it and keeps telling me stories about how he sleeps with a lot of people before killing them. Also, the line about how he could have ingested a poison that would be RIGHT NOW killing me made me want to straight up stab him right then and there. At no point in time did Zevran redeem himself or make me feel that letting him sex me up was in any way, shape, or form a good idea.
While it may be true that Zevran is probably a deeper and more complex and well written or any other variety of subjective, standard descriptions of character writing, that's not really a good thing when the character in question is a total **** and in order to actually GET to this deep, complex, well written character your PC has to have the intellegence of a particularly suicidal Twilight fan.

Thane definitely has better depth and backstory, but Zevran has more personality and overall content. Zevran's romance has more content and is more variable, but Thane's is (in my opinion) more emotionally appealing.
The dealbreaker comes from character motivation: Zevran follows you to find a new life: Thane follows you to fulfill one more good deed before his life ends.
Thane's motivations seem more noble and less selfish, and it is for that reason as to why Thane gets my checkmark.
Winner: Thane

But taking InfiRenFemShep out of the equation, I'd say Thane. Zevran's character model was just horrible (on the 360 at least), and I couldn't really stand his voice acting. The whole sliminess thing played against him. Still, he didn't betray my DA:O male character, and until I read this thread I didn't know he could.
Thane is slick, skillful, has a damn sexy voice (except when he gets googly eyed in flashback mode) even if he doesn't quite measure up to Garrus. I'm expecting him to die horribly between ME2 and ME3 from his lung condition, but he was nice to have around and just chat with.
I still get confused when people accuse DA:O of good writing tho. It has its moments, but for the most part it doesn't live up to BG1&2, or even KotOR.

Very intelligently said. My thoughts exactly. It's very hard for me not to kill this idiot assassin.Operation Genesis wrote...
Oh, god, do I prefer Thane over Zevran. It's not even that I particularly like Thane. It's just that every time I talk to Zevran I feel like a complete and utter idiot. So the guy tries to assassinate me. That's not cool, bro. If I wasn't always trying to be "the good guy," I kill his ass 100% of the time. I kill everyone else that tries to do me in, why not this idiot?
