I don't know if this has already been asked, chances are it has, and I just failed to notice, so I'm just going to ask anyway.

Basically, I've gone through this a few different times with different characters, and had hardened Alistair. He then of course accepts the crown from Eamon without a fight, removing any say my warden might have had in the matter. This is all fine and good, until I go through with a female human noble in a romance with Alistair. At which time, he proceeds to refuse the crown from Eamon, and turn around and ask my warden to make him king.

The thing is, I can't think of anything I've done differently than simply having a different origin. I don't know if it's a bug or what, but my friend tells me that in her game (ps3, while mine is pc) he accepted the crown and asked her warden to be his queen. This is what confuses me, as I don't know what I've done differently that gave me such a drastically different outcome, especially after having gone through with different types of characters, and not having the choice of who would rule.

So I'm wondering if anyone could enlighten me as to the subtle goings-on in the behind the scenes programming that has led to this little conundrum?

Was your friend a human noble by chance? Since only a Cousland pc can be Alistair's queen.

He is playing a human noble female...

Do you kill Loghain? If you want to let Loghain live Alistair will claim the throne so Loghain can be executed.

I actually don't remember... but I do know that at least once as a human noble female, I let Alistair kill him, but he still didn't take the crown on his own... but when I had a different character (elven mage I think) he took the crown after killing loghain...

Basically, if you let hardened Alistair duel Loghain and aren't a HN in a relationship with him, he'll make himself king.

If you are a HN in a relationship with him, he'll refuse the throne at first and then you get to pick as normal. This is because, otherwise, you have no opportunity to make yourself queen. You can't talk to him beforehand about it and he will never suggest it (I'm not saying your friend is lying, but I've played on PS3 and PC and Alistair has never suggested my HN being queen).

You can avoid him doing this by not letting him duel or not hardening him.

Every time I've gone through the Landsmeet, I've won it. The first few times, he wasn't hardened, the next few he was. Each time he was hardened (excepting of course with the female noble) he took the crown without question.

But basically you're saying that my warden being a noble in a relationship with him is enough to change whether he takes the crown or not?

... weird, and oddly illogical to my mind

I was mistaken about losing the Landsmeet, disregard that.

It changes him taking the crown automatically. Because the game has no contingency for a female HN arranging a marriage between herself and Alistair, unlike a male HN and Anora, it gives you the opportunity at the Landsmeet, but only if you're in a relationship with him. It looks like he's abdicating the throne, but he's not really. It's just the game recycling his unhardened reaction to open up the dialogue between the PC and him and Anora.
