Wasn't Jacob a Corsair in the Alliance? Basically like a glorified privateer? That has to make him more of a merc than the rest of the Cerberus crew.

It is also quite obvious that most of the crew have no idea what Cerberus is really capable of, the only plot hole in the whole thing is Joker, a pilot of his implied skill could have easily gotten a job, Cerberus was not his only option.  If the dialog had suggested that Joker joined because he was told he would work for Shepard again, that would be different, but that dialog does not exsist.

I've speculated about this in another thread. I'm not navy savvy but I'm pretty sure ignoring the command to abandon ship is court-martial worthy, especially if it gets the captain killed.

I did not even like Thane very much, but Jacob criticizing him because "I dont like mercenaries, and assassin's are just precise mercenaries" line, I was looking for the Shepard responce to say, "You mean, mercenaries just like your a mercenary, hypocritical much there Jacob?"

Jacob worked for 2 organizations, the Alliance and Cerberus.  You'll note that everyone on the crew of the Normandy did the exact same thing, Joker, Chakwas, the engineering crew, and the cook.  I guess that makes them all mercenaries too.

Pretty much yes, though I think the majority of the crew on the Normandy was hand picked to make Shepard feel at home and give him/her the impression that Cerberus isn't so bad after all.

Sidetrail: I think Joker was grounded because of his actions on the previous Normandy. Cerberus told him about what was going on and offered him the job. Joker, along with Chakwas, agreed to join because they wanted to work for Shepard, not Cerberus.

That's the difference between Joker/Chakwas and the rest of the crew. They appeared to join up when TIM brought Shepard into the mix.

Actually, yes. Or "freelancers" if you want to be pollitically correct.

No the term is "Alliance Corsair" if you want to be accurate.

I think the mercenary bit would have been more hilarious if you could have had Zaeed in the room.

Or I think it would have reminded me of the beautiful moments in KOTOR where Carth and Canderous yelled at eachother. Am I wrong for thinking Jacob reminds me of a black Carth, while Zaeed reminds me of Canderous?

Hmmm...interesting speculation. I think Joker just wanted to fly again. Shep being in the mix is only a plus. Chakwas had a job at a medical center on Mars. I recall her desire to fly mentioned again as well. Again, Shep's prescence is a bonus and not their requirement for joining.

Jacob is not really a strong character, he is just a douche who critizes all of Shep's decision's and shoves his face in every meeting whether it is to welcome a new crewmember or make a major decision in the game.  Add to this the fact the director forced all dialog with Jacob to be sleazy flirting and the romance to run like a bad porno and there is no reason fo any femShep to like Jacob.  The very few Jacob defender's are people who played maleShep and see Jacob as a buddy character to some extent.

There are lots of other reason's to hate Jacob as well, but since they have already been listed on the past pages I will not go through them all again, people should read at least some of the pages before they post.

"Jacob defenders" don't "feel the need" to defend the character.  Kind of hard to defend a character I had no role in creating nor writing their dialogue.  I do think the "romance" was poorly written and clearly I'm not alone in that sentiment, but some of you take this so personally its amazing.  I'm a guy and I only roll male characters so yeah, to me he's a great buddy character in that regard.  He's a much bettter buddy character than Kaidan IMHO.  I'm sorry but Kaidan was a little woe is me whiney in my eyes and apparently other people seem to share that same sentiment.  The only thing I know about the Jacob/Shep romance are youtube clips and comments on the board.

That romance dialog, however, is truly cringe worthy though. So is his loyalty quest IMO where he father decides to enslave his crew and pimp out the women Image IPB...I still don't know how the hell that got approved through QA.

This is pretty much the same stance I'm taking, with one exception. Sure Jacob makes a better buddy, but I feel that Kaidan makes a better friend, hell the two of you lost Ashley together, that type of loss brings people together, just my two cents, both Kaidan and Jacob are two of my three favorite characters.

I wasn't referring to his Alliance service. I was referring to his Cerberus time.

The perceived difference is that Jacob joined Cerberus before they decided to bring Shepard back. Joker and Chakwas joined for one mission because Shepard was coming back. Shepard is being forced into working with Cerberus because there are no other alternatives. Jacob decided to join Cerberus long before the Collectors started their attacks.

How that is viewed depends on how one perceives Cerberus.

Oh I don't disagree with you. I like Kaidan as well I just felt he was more "needy", again just my opinion, than Jacob is. I saved Kaidan. I Virmired Ashley.

I don't think "corsair" and "privateer" are interchangeable terms. At least not in the manner they're explained in ME2. Corsairs engaged in missions for the Alliance outside of Alliance space. That way if they are caught the Alliance can disavow any knowledge of their actions. That is how its explained in his dialogue with Shep. A privateer is a pirate sanctioned by one nation/organization/world? to attack, rob, and destroy another's commercial trading vessels.

Not the same thing.

Yes, they're not the same in practice, but in effect they achieve similar goals - operating under a nation's direction while that nation maintains deniability.

Yes, I agree its probably all just semantics at the end of the day. Mercenaries just usually don't limit themselves to one organization nor do they get involved with an organization's agenda beyond when is my next paycheck coming.

Yeah, Jacob was a Corsair. Would have been nice and interesting if he told us some stories or something. But instead he just tells me he's looking forward to spilling drinks after doing his loyalty quest and hoping that I might one day play a FemShep.

Kaidan, for sure.

I don't feel Jacob really lived up to his potential - whereas anything that was "missing" with Kaidan just made him seem more intriguing. (I wanted to find out more about Kaidan, vs. Jacob's incompleteness just feeling like sloppy work on the writers' part. Then again... Jack *does* say that "Jacob doesn't know who he is," so maybe this was actually intentional.)

Anyway, as romance material, Kaidan is kind and thoughtful and seems to really care, whereas Jacob appears to be on a rebound from Miranda and calls Shepard a "prize" (when he's not directly implying she's sloppy seconds with his "Miranda deserves a better man than I" remark).

I agree with this. Kaidan needs to be more confident and lose some of his timidity, but he's way better than Jacob.

BTW, nice name, Estelindis - rather rare to find a name unique *and* beautiful.

One word: chest. In comparison to Jacob, Kaidan is built like a boy.

Jacob has the waist of a twelve year old girl, and nothing about his abs can make up for that.

I think we saw some of that confidence when Kaidan stood up to Shepard on Virmire.  He may be timid in some ways, but in others he has a backbone of steel.  Jacob, on the other hand, flipflops way too much.  Jack really is right about him not knowing who he is.

I hope we'll see a bit more character development from them both in ME3.

Goodness!  Thank you very much.  =]  One handy thing about this username is that it's never taken in any community where I register.  Also, love for Tolkien's languages.
