The boring sissy vs the token black guy who is about as interesting as a brick wall
-seems like a lose-lose situation to me

There are also Thane, Garrus and Liara. Shame femShep has to go xenophile to have a decent romance with an interesting character. -.-

Using your sweeping generalisations, males get a soldier with daddy issues, a psychotic criminal or a rabbit.
Sounds like lose-lose for manShep!

I kid of course, I love Ashley.

Well, I guess you sucked at out fitting your squad then. For sentinels, you do need a lot of amour points. Plus, I stock up on plenty of medi gel. Garrus does tend to die a lot in my play thru's.

just between the two of them?

the one that DOES NOT WHINE all the time

yeah.....also Jacob would not turn down a Jacob/Liara/Femshepard sandwitch which Kaiden obviously turned down (and that is one of the reasons I always Virmire him)

Not to mention he dies too often comparing to other squadmates.

He's got both electronics and barrier. He's not nearly as fragile as say... Garrus. <.< Speaking strictly ME1 here.

Garrus did not die on me as many times as Kaidan. Different game experience. Also two sentinels in one team is a crowd.

Certainly. My experience is that Garrus would die very easily in the first half of the game due to how long it takes to unlock his electronics and get it to a decent level. This is also probably why I would pick Kaidan over him; he has access to electronics and decryption from the get-go. However if you were a sentinel yourself, I can see why you'd want to pick anyone over him since you would have the same easy access to those skills and just go with Liara or Wrex for biotics or someone with more soldier or tech abilities.

Well, if we get to add those three, it's a tie between Kaidan and Thane. Nothing wrong with Xenophilia;)

Kaidan, every time, against Jacob, Thane or Garrus. If Kaidan never existed, I might choose Thane, but if you really want to talk about a Carth-like character...WHY did they recycle that backstory again???

...But, of course, Kaidan does exist, so him all the way.

I dislike both of them as options, but if I had to choose.. Gah.. I guess Jacob. Just because even though I find his romance horrifying, out of the romance he's pretty cool, whereas I can't stand Kaidan either way.

I'd definitely go with Garrus or Thane though. Considering it's a video game, IMO appearances don't matter as much (if they did I'd have disqualified Kaidan right off for his freaky Elvis hair and Jacob for his creepy giant mouth and teeth anyway). Garrus is Shep's best friend and they have trust together and a lot in common, and Thane is a classic bad boy who holds her hand and gives her pet names.

Obviously I'm biased towards Garrus as my avatar and sig must indicate, but I do honestly think he had the best romance. Hilarious at the beginning, heartwarming at the end.

On another note why does eveyone have to mention Jacob as the black guy? I don't see Kaiden getting called the white guy. Strikes me as subconscious racism.

Kaiden isn't white. Not sure what he is, but he isn't white.

Jacob is a good looking guy, he's just a jerk. Second guesses all my decisions and is antagonistic towards my friends.

Kaidan was bad in my game. Was it beacuse i sucked at developing him - I don't care.  Even if he was a demigod during fights, he would still be boring. What can I say? Life.  All my playthroughs (inldung insanity) I managed to finish with Wrex/Garrus combo and as a sentinel Shepard. Didn't need Kaidan.

I am not saying that Kaidan  generally sucks in game or is objectively boring. These are all my personal opinions. Variety in the world is fun.

I would like to see some interesting male human squaddies in ME.   Someone like Jack. Zaeed would be great but is really undeveloped.

As a friend, Kaidan (in ME1). Because he's solid and dependable and as wooden as pinocchio.

But then he screws you over on Horizon in ME2, so then obviously Jacob's better, because he's your new bro.

If you're talking about romances, I can't compare. All in all, I'd say Kaidan's the friend who'll follow you to the edge and try to pull you back if you fall over, but not at the expense of himself. Jacob's waiting for you to fall and he'll quite happily catch you and pick up the pieces. But it you want to jump, and want somebody to jump with you, Garrus is the better friend.

I still prefer Liara, though Jack would be great. She scored mondo points when she told me that she wanted to be a pirate.

Seriously this whole voice acting thing is really annoying. Is Matriarch Benezia Deanna Troi? Is Captain Anderson Goliath from Gargoyles? Is Miranda Sarah Walker from Chuck?

They are completely different characters! Why is that so hard to get?

And no, Kaidan is not a whiner. He offers Shepard advice, Shepard asks about his backstory, Kaidan tells Shepard how he killed a turian by kicking him in the face, Shepard asks if there is anyway to help him get over it and Kaidan says he got over it a long time ago.

That's right, no personal mission needed because, unlike the majority of Shepard's companions, he's got his **** straight. But yet in a crew filled with people talking about their fathers and mothers and daughters and sons and revenge plots and betrayals, he's the whiner?!

And no to Jacob. This is what I got out of the Jacob relationship.

Shep: Helllooo

Jacob: Miranda

Shep: Sex?

Jacob: Abs

Shep: Oh yeah!

Seriously, what kind of relationship is that? In conclusion Kaidan > Jacob.

In fact, Kaidan > everyone else.

I have my reasons for disliking (borderline hating) both characters, but between the two Kaidan wins for a long term relationship hands-down. He's sturdy, dependable, and devoted.

Jacob says to femShep that he loves her but that's total BS and we all know it. There was no deep bond between the two as evidenced by their scant, bland, superficial and shallow dialogues. He just wanted a final booty call before the team ran off to their deaths. It seems almost ridiculous to me that the writers thought he would be a good idea.

Kaiden no doubt.

Jacob, well, is just Jacob. I see him more as a bro then a love interest.

I've also met many female fans who can't stand him either honestly. I myself dislike him as a romance option, but don't mind the thought of him and my Shepards being friends instead.

Frankly I can't really say which character is better for Shepard since I have yet to complete Jacob's romance myself, and I refuse to base my opinions on the videos of it up on Youtube. That said however, as friends I prefer Jacob over Kaidan by quite a bit. Jacob just seems to be quite a bit more playful than Kaidan could ever hope to be, and that makes him better suited to my personality. However, I'd probably befriend both of them and just leave it at that if given a choice about the matter. Both seem like they would be solid friends to have around.
